Sri Lanka Sri Lanka, with its stunning landscapes and captivating culture, is fringed by 1,000 miles of indigo blue sea coastline with soft golden beaches. This colourful country welcomes visitors to experience the immense natural beauty and rich cultural history, including its natural parks, Buddhist temples and ancient ruins. Making the Most of Your Stay Amazing sights... The teardrop isle offers rich culture, diverse landscape, and the warmth of local hospitality. There s so much to see that it s hard to choose, but a few of the best sights are the Temple of the Tooth, said to contain the left upper canine of the Lord Buddha, found in Sri Lanka s ancient capital of Kandy, the Sigiriya Rock Fortress with remnants of an ancient palace, complete with frescoes, and the lush plantation country, home of the world-famous Ceylon tea. Experiences to remember One of the most memorable trips will certainly be The Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home that is a facility within Udawalawe National Park. Its primary objective is to rehabilitate orphaned elephant calves for ultimate release back into the wild. Although efforts are made to minimise contact between elephants and humans to keep the elephants from becoming acclimated to humans, visitors can watch the elephants being fed which is fascinating. Something to treasure forever There s an array of delightful and unique souvenirs to find in Sri Lanka. A decadent option is silverware and gems, or for something a little simpler pick up some terracotta, woodcarvings, or pungent spices. NB. Hotels cannot serve alcohol on Poya days, which occur every full moon, and the sale of alcohol is limited during Wesak Festival (early May). Excursions Minneriya / Sigiriya / Dambulla 2 days (1 night) from 200 approx. Go on a safari in Minneriya nature reserve, spend the night in Sigiriya where you will visit the Rock Fortress then proceed to Dambulla Rock Cave Temple. Yala National Park and Galle 2 days (1 night) from 150 approx. Take part in a jeep safari in Yala National Park, famous for spotting leopards. Overnight stay in Hambantota. After breakfast explore the historic town of Galle before heading back to your beach resort. Sri Lanka South West Coast The local products of the historic town of Wadduwa are rope and basketware, made from the coir of the thousands of coconut trees along the shore. The trees also provide shade to the exceptional beaches of white or golden sand, making it an ideal location for sun worshippers. Set off the main coastal road and backed by lush vegetation, this relatively undeveloped stretch of coastline provides a sedate atmosphere for a relaxing holiday. Kalutara lies to the north of Beruwela and is a bustling town, once the centre of Sri Lanka s spice trade it now boasts a thriving basket industry and is a mix of authentic Sri Lankan culture and old Colonial charm on the backdrop of a stunning tropical landscape. The town has three striking and impressive religious buildings, a Buddhist temple, a Catholic church and a mosque plus a scattering of shops and stalls offering many locally produced crafts, fruits and souvenirs. There is a long palm fringed stretch of sand that gently shelves into the warm turquoise waters and is perfect for those wanting to relax and catch the rays. Locally many watersports are available for those looking to be active. By night entertainment is low key and mainly hotel based. An excellent choice if you re looking for a great holiday, Bentota is found south of Beruwela on the south bank of the Bentota River. The sea at Bentota is considered some of the safest for swimming, and you can sunbathe on the beaches which are dotted with shady palms. Favoured by watersports enthusiasts, the area is also good for diving and snorkelling. Journey time from airport: Wadduwa: 1 hour 20 minutes approx. Kalutara: 2 hours 30 mins approx. Bentota: 3 hours approx.
