Dakar, 18th February 2017 PRESS STATEMENT - 2 ème EDITION OF THE AFRICAN PORTS AWARDS (APA), DAKAR 2017 Celebrating Port Merit for an Emerging Africa - DAKAR 2017 At the KING FAHD PALACE Hotel in Dakar (Senegal), the second edition of the African Ports Awards (APA) took place on Friday, 17 February 2017 at 8 pm, during the closing ceremony of the 38th Council of, West and Central Africa Port Management Association (PMAWCA) and the 11th Conference of the Pan-African Association for Port Cooperation (PAPC). The African Ports Awards, it should be remembered, are a platform for celebrating the excellence and merit of the actors in the port world. This ceremony brought together the managers of the African ports grouped within the Pan-African Association for Port Cooperation (PAPC), composed of the three (3) sub-regional associations (the PMAWCA, the PMAESA and the UAPNA) with an anthology of personalities from African port world. These include Mr Hien SIE, Past-President of PMAWCA and PAPC and Director-General of the Port Authority of Abidjan (Côte d'ivoire), Mr Bisey URAB, PAPC, Chairman of PMAESA and Director General of the Port Authority of NAMIBIA, Mr. Jorge Pimenta MAURICIO, incoming President of PMAWCA and President of ENAPOR (Cape Verde), Dr. Cheikh KANTE, Director General of the Port Authority of Dakar ), The host of the ceremony, Mr Michael LUGUJE, Secretary General of the West and Central African Ports Management Association (PMAWCA), Mrs Nozipho MDAWE, General Secretary of Port Management Association Eastern and Southern Africa (PMAESA), Dr BABALOLA Abayomi, Head of Transport Division 2 OITC at the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Institutional Partner of this 2nd edition, representing this illustrious financial development institution. For the Promoter of the African Ports Awards, Mr. Guy MANOUAN, Expert in Port Management and Financial Expert, presented the history of the project, its implementation during the first edition held in September 2015 in Abidjan (Côte d'ivoire), and to present, within the framework of the 2nd enlarged edition to the ports of PMAESA, the perspectives of the project in the short, medium and long terms, expressing its sincere thanks to His Excellency Macky SALL, President of the Republic of Senegal, for accepting under his aegis the event and honored the promoter by receiving him at the presidential palace and accepting the special honor award to him. This forum provided an opportunity to distinguish four (4) PMAESA ports: South African Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), winner of two (2) prizes: '' port, better dock productivity ' 'Awarded to the port of Saldanha and' 'better traffic growth' 'awarded to the port of East London, Ports Authority of Mauritius (port Louis), winner in two (2) categories: Container Terminal '' and '' Transhipment Best Hub '', the Kenya Ports Authority, for the price of the "best port of transit of the sub-regional economies" attributed to the port of Mombasa, and the port of Djibouti SA For the "Best Management Information System" award.
On the side of the ports of the PMAWCA, five (5) ports were distinguished, namely the port Authority of San Pedro (Côte d'ivoire), for the price of the "Best productivity of the terminal to Containers"; The Port Authority of Lomé (Togo) for the "Best Traffic Increase" and "Best Transhipment Hub" awards; The Port Authority of Dakar (Senegal), winner of the "Increase in import / export traffic" awards and the "Best Capacity Building Policy"; The Port Authority of Cotonou (Benin) for the "Best port in transit of sub-regional economies" and the port of Tema (Ghana) for the "Best management information system". The ports of the PMAWCA and the PMAESA with their websites up to date statistical and operational data were cited and encouraged to continue this action of communication and good governance. It was recommended that other ports should be part of this dynamic. It was a good opportunity for Mr. Marcellin AHIMAN, Harbor Expert, former Secretary General of the Port Community of Abidjan, General Commissioner of the African Ports Awards, to communicate on the eve of the ceremony, on the prices and Technical criteria chosen to allow a rigorous selection by a jury composed of eminent experienced personalities from the port world, namely Mr. Alain Michel LUVAMBANO, Secretary General of the Maritime Organization of West and Central Africa (MOWCA) Chairman of the jury, Mr. Fernand Julien GAUZE and Mr. Olivier HARTMANN, port experts, who for several years have led their respective associations (PMAWCA and PMAESA) as Secretaries-General. They subsequently led the PAPC, after helping to establish it. To these first-mentioned personalities, we must add the following resource persons: Mr. BIGOT Mamadou, Administrator of Maritime and Port Affairs and Expert of ECA (United Nations Economic Commission for Africa), Mr. Karim COULIBALY, Regional Academy of Sciences and Techniques of the Sea (ARSTM), and Mr. DJEDE Gnakalé, International Consultant. To conclude this beautiful ceremony, the honorary prizes were awarded to the Director General of the Port Authority of Dakar, Doctor Cheikh KANTE, for spontaneously accepting to host and accompany this 2nd edition of the African Ports Awards, at Past President of PMAWCA and PACP, the Director General of the Port Authority of Abidjan, Hien SIE for his constructive opinions, to the African Development Bank (AfDB) for having agreed to associate its image with this event International level, the Secretaries General of PMAESA and PMAWCA for their constant support to the said project. Finally, Ms Nozipho MDAWE, Secretary General of PMAESA spoke on behalf of the recipients for the word of thanks and congratulated the promoter for this initiative. This is the place for us to greet and thank all of our partners whose support has been more than appreciable. We would also like to thank the Minister of Transport of the Republic of Côte d'ivoire, Mr. Amadou KONE and Mr. SILUE Siélé, Advisor to the President of the Republic in charge of Transport for their support of the African Ports Awards initiative And their readiness to accompany this project, which they consider to be in line with the vision of His Excellency Mr. Alassane OUATTARA, the President of the Republic of Côte d'ivoire, who makes excellence the keystone of his policy.
