Ohio River Basin The Ohio River Basin contains over 2,800 miles of navigable waterways. The Ohio River s 981 miles flow from Pittsburgh, PA to the Mississippi River at Cairo, IL. The basin also includes the Ohio s tributaries, including: the Tennessee, Cumberland, Monongahela, Allegheny, Green, Kanawha, and Big Sandy Rivers. In 2011, over 239 million tons of commodities moved on the waterways of the Ohio River Basin. These commodities had a combined value of 28.7 billion. A sizeable portion of this tonnage (43%) consisted of coal. Docks in the basin received over 31 million tons from outside the Ohio River System, with chemicals, ores & minerals, and coal being the largest commodities. Almost 159 million tons moved within the basin; about 73% of this amount consisted of coal. A small amount of traffic moved through the system.

The port shipped and received over 76 million tons of commodities in 2008, making it the busiest port in the Ohio River Basin, as well as the busiest inland port in the nation. The Port of Pittsburgh includes 41 miles of the Ohio River, 90 miles of the Monongahela River, and the entire 72 navigable miles of the Allegheny River. This was the 3 rd busiest inland port in the nation.

There are 20 active projects on the Ohio River, nine on the Monongahela River, eight on the Allegheny River, three on the Kanawha River, four on the Kentucky River, two on the Green River, four on the Cumberland River, nine on the Tennessee River, and one on the Clinch River.
