The National Park Service has also cleared a path for the next generation of park stewards to become inspired by the country s most treasured natural resources through its Every Kid in a Park campaign. From now through 206, every 4th-grader in the U.S. has access to free admission to all federally owned natural lands such as national park sites, national forests, wildlife refuges and more! Holbrook St. Although remotely located in Michigan s Upper Peninsula, the area surrounding the Keweenaw National Historic Park has more connections to southeast Michigan than one may think. After WWI, Henry Ford had a tremendous need for lumber which was used in everything from Ford cars to factory floors to shipping containers. Ford searched large tracts of land just south of the Keweenaw area in Iron Mountain. He eventually bought a parcel of land over 300,000 acres and used local workers to harvest the lumber. To this day, historical vestiges of Ford s work are recognized in the area. Today, the Keweenaw National Historic Park attracts thousands of visitors to its breathtaking natural scenery while also honoring the history of the area s rich copper mining story.
