Hatari! The Movie We let Hatari! revive If you re lucky enough to have seen the classic Howard Hawks movie Hatari! (1962), you ll be familiar with the ranch at which it was shot, on the edge of the Arusha National Park in Tanzania. Most of the movie was filmed there, including sweeping vistas of Mounts Kilimanjaro and Meru and nearby swampland. They filmed on locations at the Arusha National Park, Serengeti National Park, Mount Meru, Manyara National Park and in Arusha town and created one of the most visually interesting African movies of all time. That is the reason why we (the African Embassy Safaris, our own tour operator) want to invite you to an unforgettable safari experience, where you can review the Hatari! movie scenes. Hatari! is that movie you always wanted to be a part of, an adventure dream on celluloid!

Hatari! the movie Safari _1 week Duration: 1 week Itinerary List: Day 1 and 2 Hatari Lodge at the foot of Mount Meru Day 3 and 4 Shu mata Camp at the foot of Kilimanjaro Day 5, 6 and 7 Serengeti National Park

Hatari Lodge Welcomes You_Arrival Description: Hatari Lodge is situated at the northern edge of Arusha National Park. The Lodge, a unique luxury boutique hotel, consists of three buildings beautifully situated in acacia woodland allowing breathtaking views onto the Momella meadow, rich with wildlife as well as the view of the majestic Kilimanjaro. Hatari Lodge offers nine comfortably furnished rooms, each with an open fire place and a spacious bathroom. Every room has been lovingly furnished and decorated in a modern retro style. Giving tribute to the 60s and 70s the era of Hatari! The Movie. Activities: Today your flight with Condor arrives at 05:35. A representative of the Hatari Lodge awaits you at the airport for transfer through the Arusha National Park directly to the Lodge. After a delicious breakfast, you have leisure time to relax until lunchtime. After lunch you will do your first halfday activity (see following page!). Accomodation at Hatari Lodge with full board (drinks are not included).

Momella Lakes_Day 1 Why is the lake so pink? Because there are thousand and thousands of flamingos spreading across the lake, their voices producing a sound that resembles a river flowing somewhere. Lake Natron is the sole breeding ground for millions of East African Lesser Flamingo. It is located in one of the lower points of the Great Rift Valley, in a primeval landscape with thorn trees and brush, near Tanzania's only active volcano, Ol Donyo Lengai, the Mountain of God, which occasionally spills lava rich in sodium carbonate into the lake, increasing its salt concentration. To the lesser flamingos, this raw harshness is paradise. The birds do not breed every year and only lay one egg that both parents take turns incubating. Their feeding, breeding and nesting habits depend on abundant algae, a certain soda content, precise water levels and solitude. Their grey feathered chicks stay in shallow water in huge groups, under the watchful eye of a few adults, until they are able to feed themselves and fly. When this time has come, they leave Lake Natron and, in smaller groups, roam the vast lands in search of smaller alkaline lakes as their temporary home, among them the momella lakes walking distance from Hatari Lodge!

Momella Lakes_Day 1 Description: The area surrounding the Momella Lakes, located in an altitude of 1400 m, extends over the north-eastern part of the Arusha National Park and is surrounded by green hills. Here you find six lakes, surrounded by bush savanna and acacias. Several hollows were formed by the last eruption of Mount Meru, which have porous ground like a volcano, allowing water to come to the surface and offer enough water for the lakes. The biggest and also most interesting ones are the big and small Momella Lakes, together covering an area of 4 km. Flamingos prefer the Small Lake because of the high amount of alkali. Activity: After lunch you are driven to the Momella Lakes as a halfday activity. Here you get the chance to see hundreds of flamingos, which rise up to the sky in a flutter of pink. You may also see hippos and giraffes and observe them in their natural habitat. A drive to the viewpoint - Boma la Megi ends this tour where you enjoy a sundowner with a magnificient view of Mt. Kilimanjaro. We say good night to the last sunrays of the day, while enjoying delicious snacks and drinks. Accomodation at Hatari Lodge with full board (drinks are not included).

Meru-Crater-Tour_Day 2 Description: The highest point of Arusha Nationalpark is Mount Meru. With an altitude of 4566 m above sea level it is the fourth highest mountain in Africa and the second highest in Tanzania. Sometimes, during chilly months, Mount Meru is covered by a snowcrest. The steep back of the crater edge, from which only half is still existing, lies on the western park border. Nowadays Mount Meru is an extinct volcano, except of some steam holes, which are unique scenery for nature- and mountain climbers. The open cone, which is open to the eastern side, harbors a mountain rainforest with swept becks, refreshing water falls and jungle giants entwined by lianas. Activity: We hike to the crater of Mt. Meru. On the way up one passes through 3 different vegetation zones, starting from savannah, through forest and into dense jungle, reminiscent of landscapes in the movie Lord of the Rings. With the changing flora, there is also an alteration in wildlife species to be seen along the way. Upon reaching Kitoto Viewpoint, at an altitude of appro. 2500 meters, an armed ranger provides an escort on the final climb into the crater. After about two hours walk, the group returns to the vehicle and heads downhill again. Next to a picturesque waterfall, a traditional picnic awaits you to replenish burnt energy with a spectacular view of rolling plains and Kilimanjaro looming in the background. After lunch another short walk leads to the Tulusia Waterfall, cascading down and soaking those who venture too close to it.

Shu mata Camp Welcomes You Description: The Camp is located at the foot of Kilimanjaro, deep in Maasai land, in an area known as South Amboseli. Six large East African tents, in true Hemingway - style are lined on a hill from which magnificent views lead in all directions. At the front of the camp, bush savannah melts into the slopes of Kilimanjaro, towering above into the blue skies of Africa. The view is so clear that on a moonlit night, details of the glaciers may be visible. Seasonally, the surrounding savannah bush teems with wildlife - large herds of elephant, eland, zebra and wildebeest, Oryx as well as Grants and Thompson Gazelle. The comfortable safari tents, lined on a hill, in the true Hemingway - style, all fitted with en-suite bathroom, toilet and shower in colourful decorations of Maasai Art. Each tent has its own veranda with up-lifting views. Outside, under the great African sky the open fire adds a true feeling of adventure and safari romance. Discover the wonderful stars in the sky after sunset and enjoy delicious food on a long table with all guests. Activity: After breakfast in Hatari Lodge and all luggage is securely packed up in the jeep, you are driven through the steppe to our Shu'mata Camp, which takes 2 to 2,5 hours. Arrival at the camp in time for lunch. For the next days all tours are included within the Shu'mata experience.

Maasai-Naturalist Walk Description: Water is more precious than diamonds in an area as dry and arid as the Sinya Steppe. The Maasai living in this area are constantly threatened by drought and often have to carry water from distances of many kilometers. Most of the Maasai living in this steppe in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro do not have permanent access to drinking water, it is often difficult, sometimes even impossible, to find water for livestock or domestic use. Every day, Maasai women and girls have the daunting task of locating and transporting water to their homes and villages. The Maasai have to return to being the guardian of nature. To us, the land came first, then came the animals, and in the end came man. Balance is the key word - balance with nature, but also a new balance for the Maasai people, between old and new. Let's protect the environment - man, land and beast. (Ole Molloimet -Maasai Elder) Activity (depending on time of day): On this tour the Maasai share with us their wide knowledge of herbs and medicines, and introduce us to their unique lifestyle and land, where they have been living for several centuries in spite of the long dry seasons. Experience and gain an insight into their daily lifestyle off the beaten track. In the late afternoon you will return to the camp, where a sundowner on the hill is waiting for you. Here you can enjoy beautiful views across the wide open savannah.

Amboseli Sinya Tour_Morning Description: This barren land, scattered with islands of old acacia forests and seasonal swamps flank the pans of the embosel ecosystem which stretches to the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is this region, away from the busy tourism areas of northern Tanzania, where the elderly elephants retreat to spend their final years in peace and harmony and away from the madding crowds. On foot with Maasai warriors or in open-top game-drive vehicles we get within arms reach of Africa s largest mammals. Timeless moments. Sensing the great peace and beauty of these magnificent creatures and calmly sharing the habitat with the Maasai and their cattle, a true original part of Africa. Activities (depending on season): As a half-day trip: Early in the morning, set out for a game drive to southern Amboseli with a wonderful packed breakfast, which you will have out in the bush. Later on head back to the camp for lunch. As a full-day trip: With this tour you are out in the bush for the whole day. After a nice breakfast at the camp set out for a game drive to southern Amboseli with a wonderful packed lunch, which you will have out in the bush. Continue the game drive and in the early evening head back to the camp for dinner and overnight stay.

Maasai Boma Visit Description: From our Shu mata Camp, we organise a visit to a Maasai boma. Boma is the traditional homestead of the maasai people, who are semi-nomadic. The women build the traditional huts, made of a wooden structure, into which a mix of clay and cow dung is plastered as walls, this is then covered with natural roofing materials such as straw. These huts give into weather conditions and have to be rebuilt every six years on average. The Maasai are mainly cattle herders, but don t usually eat meat on a daily basis. Instead, they drink milk in large quantities and occasionally supplement their diet with fresh blood obtained by making a small cut into the animal s throat without killing it. Activity (depending on time of day): An interesting excursion awaits you to a Maasai boma in the Sinya flat. Here you will get a very good insight iton the daily life and tradition of the maasai. Later in the afternoon you will enjoy a wonderful sundowner at a very nice place in the middle of the Maasai steppe. Dinner and overnight will be at the camp.

Night Game Drive Description: During the day the diversity of species is very high here in the maasai steppe. A lot of wild animals live here and you can see them outside in the bush. But when you get the chance to do a night game drive, you should take it, because at night different animals are on their way through the bush. Activity: After sunset you will take a night game drive by jeep. You get the possibility to see wild animals and take amazing pictures at close range. Return to the camp for late dinner and enjoy a relaxing glass of wine of your choice. *Accomodation at the Shu mata Camp with board (drinks are included). full

Serengeti_Day 5, 6 and 7 Description: The Serengeti region encompasses the Serengeti National Park itself, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Maswa Game Reserve, the Loliondo, Grumeti and Ikorongo Controlled Areas and the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. Over 90,000 tourists visit the Park each year. Two World Heritage Sites and two Biosphere Reserves have been established within the 30,000 km² region. The Serengeti ecosystem is one of the oldest on earth. The essential features of climate, vegetation and fauna have barely changed in the past million years. Early man himself made an appearance in Olduvai Gorge about two million years ago. Some patterns of life, death, adaptation and migration are as old as the hills themselves. The Serengeti wildebeest migration is as old as the history of mankind. Activities: After breakfast, departure to the airport for flight to Serengeti. Alex Walker s Serian camp awaits you. Here you will enjoy game drives and other planned activities such as guided walks for the next two days. Become witnesses of the great migration of reams of wildebeests and zebras! Accomodation at Alex Walker s Serian Camp with full board (drinks are included)

Serengeti_Alex Walker's Serian Camp The Alex Walker's Serian Camp is a traditional tented bush camp in the Serengeti plains. It moves with the Migration from south to north. Between December and April it is located in the Ngorongoro conservation area. This is the birth season of the wildebeest. Between July and November it is located near the Mara River which the migration crosses. Seven private (inc one family) tents, each unique in their own way furnished with large double beds, flanked by bedside tables and writing desks, the adjoining "bush bathrooms" include a shower, twin basins, large bush bathtub and flush toilet. Hanging swathes of cotton and canvas walls provide complete privacy. The Mess deck and indoor fireplace leave one with the impression of having found a home from home! If you stay more than 3 nights you may book the Adventure Fly Camp. The accomodation is in 3m x 3m dome tents with safari showers or on bedrolls under the open sky. Meals are served under the stars. You will be accompanied by an experienced walking guide.

Serengeti_Migration The Southern Serengeti is dominated by vast apparently infinite short grass plains, the Maswa woodlands to the south west and the dramatic Gol Mountains and open plains of Loliondo to the east. The southern plains are at their best between mid December and late May when this whole area comes alive as millions of wildebeest move onto the plains in search of the fresh green grass after the first rains. North of the Mara River lies the Lamai Wedge, rolling savannah contrasts with rock-strewn hillsides and giant fig-tree groves. This little-known area in northern Serengeti full of secret valleys and ranging hills, has the Mara river running through it. The migration passes through from June to November, this is the most exciting time! With immense panoramic river crossings, you witness crocodiles gorging themselves, whilst indulgent Lion, Cheetah and Leopard pursue and delight in the smorgasbord of nomadic mega herds.

Serengeti_ Walking With Warriors Description Activity: Contemplate on the traditional! Walk with warriors of the Masai, hunt with Hadzabe Bushmen, learn from their long-established wildlife experience in the bush. Walking with Alex or another experienced guide you will notice we actively endeavor to conserve a genuine environment.we have an exclusive use conservation area of 250,000 acres with access to over 1,500,000 more; this is a classic walking area. You will immediately notice the difference between a vehicle tour and one conducted on foot. Senses that may have been a little dulled in a car will strain to perceive indications of the wild game that surrounds you. Your perception of the bush will change until you feel an intimate relationship with the environment itself. A stroll south through the acacia woodland dominated by great kopjes, passing through herds of wildebeest and zebra will loosen the muscles. Unusual species include lesser kudu, side striped hyena and caracal, and tracking is easy in the rich alluvial soil. Walking with Warrior s you will learn how to track, harvest honey, light fires the real way, make bows and arrows and stalk silently to short distances of your prey. Sleeping out under the stars, the skies appear iridescent sparkling galaxies of stars, great consciousness can be made of this in the company of traditional astronomers. Follow the spoor of an Impala ram in the early morning and track it step by step through its daily routine. Scrounging up fresh acacia pods, alarmed by the leopard, scratching its itchy horns on the trees nearby until there! There he is! Proud horns spiral into the air, an alarm bark and he stands stock-still. Three hours of tracking rewarded by a close glimpse,

The African Embassy Safaris says Kwaheri _Day 8 If I were able to live my life anew, in the next I would try to commit more errors. I would not try to be so perfect, I would relax more, I would be more foolish than I ve been, in fact, I would take few things seriously. I would be less hygienic, I would run more risks, take more vacations, contemplate more sunsets, climb more mountains, swim more rivers. I would go to more places where I ve never been, I would eat more ice cream and fewer beans, I would have more real problems and less imaginary ones. I was one of those that never went anywhere without thermometer, a hot water bottle, an umbrella, and a parachute; if I could live again, I would travel lighter. I was one of those people who lived sensibly and prolifically each minute of his life; of course, I had moments of happiness. If I could go back I would try to have only good moments. Because if you didn t know, of that is life made: only of moments: Don t lose the now. (Jorge Luis Borges) Depart from Serengeti in the afternoon, on arrival in Arusha, transfer to the Kilimanjaro Airport, where you will meet your onward flight back home. We wish you a comfortable return flight. Tutaonana! For departure with KLM there is a direct transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport after Serengeti!
