October 2016 www.paignton-u3a.co.uk A Message from your Chairman, Barbara Dear Members, Autumn really has arrived. It is so much colder in the mornings and evenings and the heating has started to come on first thing. We have just had a smart meter installed; now I just know Ron is never going to stop telling me how much the tumble dryer, washing machine or my hair dryer is costing to run, but I am sure it is a good idea that we have one installed. This year the committee has decided to have the U3A Christmas Lunch at the Hare and Hounds Kingskerswell on 9th December 12.30 For 1.00 p.m. We have tried most of the hotels in the area with varying degrees of success over the years. The Hare and Hounds is very popular and has very good reputation for food. The limit is 60 persons. More details are in this newsletter. At the end of May this year I received an email from the Co-op Local staying that someone had put Paignton U3A forward as an applicant to be considered for their Community Fund. I had to fill in an application form stating what we would do with any money if it was forthcoming with very little time for consultation as the deadline was only a couple of days away. I wrote in 150 words why I thought we were a deserving cause and what use we would put the money to if we received any and how it would benefit our members. I suggested musicals instruments and music stands and day lights and artist slopes. Surprisingly it was confirmed that we are one of the chosen charities. So please if you use the Co-op would you consider putting the token in our box? There are more details in this newsletter. Hope to see as many of you as possible on Tuesday. Barbara Barbara Collins LONGLEAT TRIP on Friday 14th October. If anyone who has booked is no longer able to come, please let Barbara () or Colin (698377) know asap. BOOKSWAP at General meeting on 8 th November. Novels, autobiographies, fiction, nonfiction paperback or hardback that you think other members might wish to read. Please no dusty tomes that have been languishing in your garage for fifty years! 2017 U3A diaries will be available at October s General meeting for 2 each. 1

Co-op Local Community Fund Paignton U3A has been successful in its application to be sponsored by the Co-op Local Community Fund. On the 21st September, the Co-op re-launched its Co-op Membership and its members will receive their new cards and will be able to choose a cause in their communities to support. Every time members choose Co-op branded products and services in the 7 local Co-op shops and 3 funeral parlours and use their Co-op Membership card, 1% of what they spend will go to their chosen cause until March 2017. We plan to use the money buy musical instruments and arts & crafts items. Trips & Outings & Events Longleat House and Safari Park, Friday 14TH OCTOBER. Meet at Garfield Rd Coach Stop at 8.30am. Returning about 6.30pm. As many will probably prefer to sit towards the front of the coach, it might be difficult to please everyone. Please do not get on the coaches before we check names and sort out the seating. Thank you for your cooperation. If anyone who has booked is no longer able to come, please let Barbara () or Colin (698377) know asap. Royal Albert Hall Musical Spectacular Leaving Sunday 20 TH NOVEMBER at 8.30am for Bristol and returning Monday 21 st November at about 9.30pm. PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP Three weeks into September and the weather is holding up very nicely and some of the trees are beginning to take on their autumn colours just begging for someone to take their pictures. September s competition theme was Water and we had a splendid lot of entries this month. Bob Tame s photo of the Rough Seas was voted into first place, Brian Tucker s Fountains made it into second place, but we had a four-way tie for the third spot, so I had the deciding vote and James Cairns lovely wide angle Seascape got the spot. The winning photos will be on display at the October meeting and also they will be sent as an attachment to the electronic version of this newsletter for members to look at. October s theme is ELEMENTS with the November theme is TRANSPORT. Google have decided to give away their NIK Collection of software free of charge, previously it was charged for; it can be downloaded from https://www.google.com/nikcollection/ This can be used either as a plug in for Photoshop Elements from version 9 or the full version of Photoshop, it can also be used as a standalone program. To get some idea what can be achieved using this software go to youtube and search for NIK collection where there will be several videos showing various aspects of this software. With this in mind we had a short video showing one aspect of this program and after a break for coffee and sticky buns we had a practical demonstration of another of its apps. Keep snapping. Ron QUIZ GROUP Our next quiz is on Friday 21st, room 12 at Paignton Library, 2pm. Carol Owen SKITTLES The next session will be held at the Parkers Arms on the Totnes Road at 5.30pm on Monday 17th October. Everyone welcome; fun and exercise rolled into one.
