show briefing Farnborough Orders 2014

LESSORS DOMINATE There were collective order commitment announcements of over 1,000 during this year s Farnborough air show, and more than 200 option commitments. LCC 11% LEISURE 5% Biz/Gov 0.6% Much of the activity came from aircraft lessors. The airframers announced 576 order and option commitments from a dozen lessors during the show. While, as with airlines, some of these confirm earlier commitments and others are still be finalised, it is clear the aircraft lessors continue to have an appetite for ordering aircraft. Getting on for half of these commitments, 261, were for the Airbus A320neo. Another 20 were for Boeing s 737 Max and Airbus picked up 55 order MoUs from lessors for the re-engined A330 it launched at start of the show. BIG SPENDERS Steven Udvar-Hazy s leasing firm Air Lease was the most active customer during Farnborough, making commitments for 118 aircraft across five different types. The lessor was the first to go public with a commitment for the A330neo, signing an MoU for 25 of the type. It followed with orders both Airbus and Boeing new generation narrowbodies, Boeing 777-330ERs and more ATR 72-600s. Another lessor, SMBC Aviation Capital, signed the biggest firm order of the show and for a lessor for single-aisle aircraft by committing to 110 A320neos and five current generation models. Qatar Airways was the biggest spending airline at the show after firming its Dubai air show commitment for 50 Boeing 777Xs and placing purchase rights on 50 more of the type. It also also took commitments on eight freighters. 118 115 108 100 75 FIRM ORDER 93 Airbus A320neo 60 FIRM ORDER 50 Boeing 777X 50 Boeing 737 Max 20 ATR 72-600 7 Boeing 777 6 ORDER LOI 25 Airbus A330neo 25 FIRM ORDER 115 Airbus A320neo 110 Airbus A320ceo 5 OPTION 4 Boeing 777F 4 ORDER LOI 54 Boeing 777X 50 Boeing 777F 4 OPTION 50 Embraer E-Jet E2 50 ORDER LOI 50 Embraer E-Jet E2 50 FIRM ORDER 25 ATR 42-600 25 OPTION 50 ATR 42-600 50 Show Briefing Flightglobal 3

Hong Kong Aviation Capital finalised an order for 70 Airbus A320neo-family jets comprising 40 A320neos and 30 of the larger A321neo. The lessor had outlined a large acquisition under an MoU during last year s Paris air show. That agreement would have covered 60 aircraft. But it is taking another 10 A321neos under the firm deal. The order contributed to 317 commitments for the A320neo family during the show, including SMBC Aviation Capital s commitment for 110 of the type. Lessors AerCap, Air Lease and BOC Aviation also fed the figure, while British Airways is to take 20 A320neos. Chinese carriers Hainan Airlines and Okay Airways, together with Monarch Airlines of the UK, were among the airlines to tentatively sign for Boeing s 737 Max. Together with the Air Lease deal, this gave Boeing 121 commitments to its new narrowbody. Bombardier Cseries commitments included deals with operating lessor Falko and Chinese carrier Loong Air. 4 Flightglobal Show Briefing
