KU-16-08-31/f PART I: GENERAL INFORMATION DESCRIPTION OF TOWN - SHORT HISTORY AND LOCATION Our classes and site visits are going to be organized mainly in Budapest, but a minor part of them will take place in Piliscsaba, in our famous and well-known campus, in the metropolitan area of Budapest. Piliscsaba, town of about 9 000 citizens, lies in the beautiful environment between the Pilis and Buda mountains. The area has been populated for thousands of years. With the migration of a lot of people, mainly intellectuals from Budapest to Piliscsaba in the 1980 s, and the move of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of Pázmány Péter Catholic University to the town, Piliscsaba has been focusing on becoming the cultural and education centre of the region. The part of the town which became home of our campus had served as a military base and barrack since the 19 th century, until it was transformed to a university campus in the 1990 s. Most of the buildings of the 21-acre land have been reconstructed by the world famous Hungarian architect, Imre Makovecz, winner of the French academy s gold medal in 1997. With its natural beauties and the accessibility of all technical resources (2016: 35 classrooms with multi-media equipment have been introduced) the campus in Piliscsaba is a perfect place for studying in the agglomeration of Budapest. Budapest, the vivid capital of Hungary, is one of the youngest European capital cities, since it has been formed by the unification of three cities at the end of the 19 th century, though it has a history of two thousand years. It is located in the North of Hungary and it is the country s principal political, cultural, commercial, industrial and transportation centre. The oldest part, Óbuda (lit. Old Buda) was the capital of the Roman province, Pannonia Inferior, called Aquincum. After the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin, the local Magyar tribes started to build flourishing cities on the Roman city structures. A castle was built in Óbuda, while Pest was surrounded with walls from the 12 th century. The Mongol invasion destroyed most of both cities, and then a new castle was built in modern Buda, which became the new capital of the country in the 14 th century. The area of the three cities was conquered by the Ottoman Empire in the middle of the 16 th century, and occupation only ended at the end of the 17 th century, when the Kingdom of Hungary became part of the Habsburg Empire. In 1873 the cities of Buda, Óbuda and Pest were unified as Budapest, creating our new and modern capital city. The image of Budapest, thus, is based on its multicultural history. One can still see the ruins of the Roman times, while the Medieval walls and the monuments of the Ottoman period can also be found easily. But the real change in the landscape of Budapest was the last decades of the 19 th century, when most of Budapest s extensive world heritage sites were built, including the banks of the Danube, the Buda castle quarter, Andrássy avenue, Heroes square and the Millennium Underground. - MAIN LOCAL/CULTURAL EVENTS This time of the year, i.e. July is one of the most stirring periods of the summer always full of cultural festivities all around Hungary. Some of the colourful cultural programmes are: Vajdahunyadvár Summer Festival, Red Bull Air Race World Series, International Palace Games of Visegrád, Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix, Dance Bazaar etc. 2

KU-16-08-31/f - HOW TO REACH TOWN (LINKS FROM THE NEAREST AIRPORT, TRAIN OR COACH STATIONS) Bus number 200E links Liszt Ferenc international airport with our largest metro line, which then directly brings one to the city centre. Our staff, mainly mentor students are going to help the participants to easily reach their accommodation, which is going to be in the city centre, on the line of this metro line. Our main railway stations and coach stations are in the city on the metro lines, which makes easy to reach the city centre by underground. Piliscsaba is also easily accessible by train; from Nyugati Railway station it only takes about 45 minutes to get directly to Pázmáneum, a stop on campus. - TRANSPORT IN TOWN (BRIEF INFORMATION ON THE MAIN MEANS OF TRANSPORT AVAILABLE) Budapest has one of the best and most developed public transportation networks in Europe, including 4 metro lines, dozens of tram and hundreds of bus lines, and in the summer it is also possible to take boats on the Danube, which in themselves serve as sightseeing events as well. There s virtually no spot in Budapest which cannot be reached by means of public transportation. We provide public transportation passes to our participants, so that they can travel with the above means for free within the administrative boundaries of Budapest. 3

SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGANISING INSTITUTION KU-16-08-31/f Pázmány Péter Catholic University (PPCU) is a state approved higher educational institution that is run by the Catholic Church and governed by the Hungarian Catholic Bishops Conference. The Congregation of the Catholic Education of the Apostolic Holy See in its decree No. 1151 (on 25 November 1999) declared that Pázmány University had been established and approved directly by the Holy See. The University has a legal entity both in the legal system of the Catholic Church and of the State of Hungary. PPCU forms a unique segment of Hungarian higher education as a non-regional institution with national coverage being the only single university of the Hungarian Catholic higher education. Our University was founded in 1635 and has been continuously operating ever since. In 1993 the Hungarian Parliament registered Pázmány Péter Catholic University (and along with it the Faculty of Humanities) as a university accredited by the state. We currently have five faculties: the Faculty of Theology, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences, the Faculty of Information Technology and Bionics and the Postgraduate Institute of Canon Law, which also has faculty status. The University is a scientific community that, through its strict and critical approach, promotes the protection and development of human dignity and cultural heritage by research, education and other activities provided to the given national and international community, especially in the field of theology and human sciences, but as much as possible in the area of natural sciences as well. At the same time the University has the mission to ensure the presence of the Catholic Faith in Hungarian culture, and to become one of the determining factors of the Catholic cultural life. ACCOMMODATION - SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMMODATION OFFERED (HOTEL, APARTMENTS, STUDENT HALLS, OTHERS; IF THERE ARE COOKING FACILITIES) AND ON THE RENT TO BE PAID PER WEEK Accommodation is provided by the organising institution. We plan to put up the group in the hostel called Casa de la Musica, which is one of the best hostels in Budapest with several types of rooms, but we will try to satisfy the needs of each and every participant in the cooperation of the Hostel. Rooms are fully furnished, common kitchen and common bathrooms can be found here, but private bathrooms are also an option in some rooms. Since the Hostel is in the middle of the city centre, everything can be reached easily, like libraries, museums or the world famous Jewish Quarter, which is the best place to be to relax after a tiring day with its regular and street food restaurants, or coffee bars and ruin pubs. Nonetheless, the hostel is in walking distance to the main educational spot of the summer school, i.e. Sophinaum at 1 Mikszáth square. MEALS - SHORT DESCRIPTION ON THE SERVICES OFFERED (UNIVERSITY CANTEENS, RESTAURANTS, BARS, OTHERS) Meals are provided by the organising institution. In Budapest, Loyola Café, Muzikum Restaurant, Manga Cowboy Restaurant and Darshan Restaurant are going to be the host restaurants during the summer school. In Piliscsaba, Fényesliget restaurant has been our partner for several years. For our programmes beyond Budapest and Piliscsaba, we will organise meals in selected local restaurants. We will offer special menus for participants with special eating habits. 4

KU-16-08-31/f RECEPTION OF STUDENTS - MEETING POINT (PLACE, DATE AND TIME OF FIRST MEETING - FOR EACH COURSE WHERE DIFFERENT) Students are supposed to arrive to Budapest on 8 July, and the same day staff is going to assist them with check-in at the accommodation, if requested and necessary. First gathering is going to take place on 9 July in Sophianum (1 Mikszáth Square, Budapest), on the first day of the summer school, which also includes an opening discussion and general orientation. The general meeting point is going to be the accommodation or the main building (Sophianum) of the summer school. EXTRA MURAL ACTIVITIES - SITE VISITS Budapest: city tour (visit the most important sights of Budapest), guided tours (St. Stephen s Cathedral and the Dome, Parliament, Museum of Ethnography, Inner Parish Church (including and organ concert), Robert Capa Center, Petőfi Museum of Literature, National Gallery, and the Buda Castle,). Piliscsaba: the campus and surroundings Visegrád: Royal Palace, Salomon Tower and the Palace Games of Visegrád Esztergom: Castle Museum, Cathedral of Esztergom, Mária Valéria Bridge, and general sightseeing - SPORTS FACILITIES (SWIMMING, TENNIS, GYMNASIUM; OPENING DAYS AND AVAILABLE INFORMATION) In Budapest there are numerous fitness centres, public football and basketball fields, swimming-pools and baths. In the hills of metropolitan Budapest marked tracks guide hikers as they climb or do cross-country running. In Piliscsaba, we can also offer several kinds of fields of sport, and we also have a gym free to use by students and staff. The campus is open from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm, and within this timeframe students are welcome to do any kind of sports on campus. On request we are pleased to help the participants to fulfil their desires to do the above or also other special kinds of sports (e.g. horse riding in Piliscsaba, or bowling and billiard sports in Budapest). - ENTERTAINMENT (CINEMA, THEATRE, ETC.; BRIEF INFORMATION ON PLACES AND STUDENT FACILITIES) In addition to the above mentioned cultural programmes, it is a fact that Budapest, as also the cultural capital of Hungary, is full of cinemas, theatres, museums, etc., so the participants can find almost unlimited possibilities of entertaining programmes for themselves in their free time. Recommendations are going to be made by the staff and student mentors. 5
