INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROGRAMS WHO CAN ATTEND THE PROGRAMS? We welcome families and individuals. Most programs can accommodate organized groups; please call to see if space is available. Some programs have quantity restrictions. MUST I REGISTER? Knowing how many people will attend helps us to prepare the best program for you. Most programs have limited space and registration is on a first come first serve basis. Please register by calling the Washington County Parks and Recreation office at 724-228-6867. HOW LONG ARE THE PROGRAMS? Programs usually last between 1 and 2 hours, unless noted otherwise. HOW SHOULD I DRESS? Please dress appropriately for the outdoors and for light hiking/walking. Most programs will be held regardless of the weather. IS THERE A FEE? Most of our programs are free. Due to the cost of materials used in some of our programs there may be a minimal materials fee. SHELTER RESERVATIONS? Shelter reservations for Mingo Creek, Cross Creek and Ten Mile Creek County Parks are available beginning the second Monday of January each year. Make your reservations early to assure your favorite picnic spot! Permits are required and fees apply.
Homeschool Outdoor Classroom Cupcake Birdfeeders Thursday, February 12, 2015 Park Office 1:00 p.m. (Ages 5-11) Join us as we make and take home special cupcakes for the birds to help keep their bellies full during the winter. We ll use our culinary creativity to decorate these delicious treats with some of their favorite foods. From the warmth of our park office, we ll also observe and identify the birds that visit our feeder during the winter. FEE: $1.00 Bird Banding Saturday, February 21, 2015 Park Office 9:00 a.m. Join us for this unique birding opportunity as we attempt to band some of our resident winter birds. With a little luck and cooperation from the weather, participants will learn firsthand about bird banding, as well as how our feathered friends adapt for overwintering in our region. Registration will be limited. Valentine s Night Walk Friday, February 13, 2015 Shelter 4 6:30 p.m. Bring your sweetie or the entire family for a luminary lit walk on a portion of the paved walking trail in. The walk will conclude with a bright-n-cozy campfire and a hot cup of cocoa. Dress for the weather. Cache Me if You Can Saturday, March 7, 2015 Park Office 11:00 a.m. This is a great opportunity to discover Geocaching, and learn the basics of this fun, recreational activity. Join us as we search for hidden treasures (caches) in using a handheld Global Positioning Device (GPS). We will have a limited number of GPS units to utilize, but if you have a handheld device in which you can enter latitude and longitude coordinates or an equipped smartphone, feel free to bring it along with you.

Thursday, March 12, 2015 Park Office Session I 10:00 a.m. Session II 1:00 p.m. (Ages 5-11) Inspired by The Lorax, today we ll celebrate Dr. Suess s birthday by taking part in some earth-friendly activities. Maple Sugaring Sugarbush Tour & Breakfast Saturday, March 21, 2015 Shelter 6 & Park Office 9:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. Join the Washington County Department of Parks & Recreation staff for a tasty tour of s Sugarbush. Discover techniques used to turn maple tree sap into 100% pure maple syrup. Historical demonstrations, modern day sap collecting methods and evaporation secrets will be shared. The program will conclude with a pancake breakfast served with pure Mingo Creek Syrup, sausage and a drink at the Park Office. Tours begin every ½ hour. Group size is limited to 20 per tour. FEE: $2.00 per person Preschool at the Park Visit the Wednesday, April 1, 2015 Session I - 10:00 a.m. Session II - 1:00 p.m. (Ages 3-5) Look to the heavens at the for this month s preschool adventure. Preschoolers will be treated to a planetarium program and see a few of the major constellations and planets. Afterwards we ll take a tour of the observatory and its telescopes provided by members of the Amateur Astronomers of Pittsburgh. Please dress for the weather.

Woodcock are also known as timberdoodle, bog sucker and big-eyed snipe. As dusk approaches we will be listening for the peenting of the males and watching the evening sky to observe the unusual courtship flight. Dress for the weather and moderate hiking. Great PA Clean Up Cherry Pie Hike Saturday, April 11, 2015 10:00 a.m. Shelter 4 10:00 a.m. Cross Creek Park Shelter 3 Individuals, families and organized groups are invited to join the Parks & Recreation Staff for the Great PA Clean Up at Mingo Creek and Cross Creek Parks. Trash bags and gloves will be provided. Grilled hot dogs and a bottle of water will be provided. Organized groups welcome Saturday, April 18, 2015 Park Office 10:00 a.m. Spring is a perfect time to get moving outdoors and enjoy what our park has to offer beyond the beaten path. Together we ll hike over hill and dale, and enjoy a slice of cherry pie upon our return. This is a moderately difficult hike and includes rough, uneven terrain. Please dress appropriately for the weather and hiking. FEE: $2.00

Learn where to search for these tasty spring mushrooms during this program. Boots, long pants and long-sleeved shirts are recommended. Family Campout Tuesday, April 28, 2015 Shelter 4 6:00 p.m. Brownie troops can earn their Hiker Badge at this session. Participants will need to bring along a few items to meet the requirements: a backpack, water bottle, energy snack, and comfortable hiking gear. The Washington County Department of Parks and Recreation will supply the activity; troop leaders will supply the badges. Space is limited. Saturday, May 2, 2015 Shelter 8 Set up may begin as early as 4:00 p.m. Spend an evening in camping under the star-filled skies. As night falls, we ll be cooking hot dogs, roasting marshmallows and spending time around the campfire. An evening program and a visit to the will be offered after dark. We ll prepare a simple campfire breakfast Sunday morning. Bring your own tent and camping supplies. For newbies the park staff will be available to help set up tents. FEE: $5.00 per campsite
Preschool at the Park Salamander Tales Tuesday, May 5, 2015 Shelter 6 Wednesday, May 6, 2015 Session I 10:00 a.m. (Ages 3-5) Session II 1:00 p.m. Preschoolers will slosh along with the park staff in search of salamanders that call the tributaries of Mingo Creek home. You ll need water shoes or rubber boots, quick hands and a keen eye as we search for these four legged amphibians. A change of clothes is recommended. Salamander Search Thursday, May 7, 2015 Shelter 4 7:00 p.m. Explore the soggy spring seeps, rivulets and tributaries of Mingo Creek to discover salamanders that call the park home. Habitat preference, tips to safely collect these delicate amphibians and identification tips will be shared. Dress for the weather. Rubber boots are recommended. We ll cover the basics of fly fishing and do a bit of practice casting in the grassy area near the shelter before heading to the lake. Owl Prowl Thursday, June 4, 2015 Shelter 3 8:00 p.m. Cross Creek Park Dissect an owl pellet to discover the nocturnal feeding habits of an owl. Take a night hike to listen for the vocalizations of resident owls. Screech and Barred Owls may be heard during this program. This is a fun-filled family outing. An array of pioneer activities, such as cooking over the fire pit and panning for gold, will be shared. Native American living, games, crafts and stories will also be included. Canoeing & Kayaking On Cross Creek Lake Thursday, August 6, 2015 County Park Rd. Launch 5:15 p.m. or 6:45 p.m. Cross Creek Park Dip your paddle into the waters of Cross Creek Lake to discover canoeing or kayaking. Learn canoeing or kayaking basics from the PA Fish & Boat Commission, and then cast off on your own maiden voyage by canoe or kayak. The PFBC will provide canoes, kayaks, life jackets and basic instruction. Sign up for either the 5:30 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. program. Children must be 15 years of age to use a kayak. Butterfly Walk Saturday, August 8, 2015 Shelter 1 Parking Area 1:00 p.m. Learn more about the beautiful butterflies found in Washington County as we peek into the world of butterflies with Monica Miller. Search for and observe colorful butterflies along the way, learn life histories and the habitat preferences of common local butterflies. Wear comfortable shoes and a hat. Bring a bottle of water. As water travels it can transform from a liquid to a solid, or a gas, while it moves from place to place finding a new home. Children will create a bracelet to show the different stages of the water cycle, and then they will role play as a drop of water in the water cycle game so they can see for themselves how water moves through various steps in the water cycle.

Trick or Treats will be provided along the trail to children ages 11 and under. Together we ll hike over hill and dale, and enjoy a slice of pumpkin pie upon our return. This is a moderately difficult hike and includes rough, uneven terrain.
