Even though it is a very populous township, it has a number of attractions for those who love nature, due to the great accessibility and observation facilities presented by the coast.
[1] The coastal landscape is full of cliffs, except for San Martin firth. This ecosystem is a temporary refuge for migratory birds, which gives us the opportunity to observe some species which are rare in Cantabria. Besides, many bird species inhabit this estuary all throughout the year. Therefore, this area has a great ornithological value. Vegetation in the marsh areas consists of species who live next to saline waters, such as
common reed, rush or purslane. In cliffs and coastal islets, the herring gull and the European shag are bird species very common in this ecosystem. But we will also see species from other ecosystems which take refuge in the cliffs, for instance, peregrine falcons and common kestrels. At the fringes, the stable natural vegetation is the Atlantic heath: woody shrubs and sub-shrubs, such as gorse and heather. [2]
[3] On the beaches and coastal sands, vegetation is herbaceous. Since sands are mobile, the plant species that live in them, such as spurge, garden orach or wild radish sea, are equally moved. So the vegetation often disappears when autumn and winter arrive, emerging elsewhere next summer.
Due to the scarce vegetal cover, the most interesting animals from a faunal point of view are reptiles, such as green lizard and Bedriaga's skink, birds such as golden plover, common tern and seagull and invertebrates such as sand fleas. Finally, we must not forget the meadow lands, the largest ecosystem in the municipality because of the gentle topography. We will find grasslands with eucalyptus and some native trees in their boundaries. [4]
Besides, we can find some predatory mammals such as, hedgehog and fox, and some birds which take refuge in eucalyptus forests. STROLLING Suances: The surroundings of the lighthouse, the park in?punta del Dichoso? and the Torco defensive walls make up an ideal place to enjoy the sea breeze and beautiful sea views. Another interesting place for walking is La Ribera and the dock area. You can even reach the Landscape Park, connected to the pedestrian and cycling lane. You could also come close to La Cuba neighbourhood to enjoy its charm and peep from the scenic overlook, which offers excellent views of the village. Moreover, from this area you can take?fuente de Enmedio shortcut? which leads you to La Ribera.
