Social Media The City began using social media as a way to connect with and better inform its citizens in August 204. From our humble early beginnings, our online following continues to increase daily. The City s social media efforts are focused mainly around Facebook, but it does also have a limited, but growing presence on LinkedIn, Twitter and YouTube. Why connect with the City on social media? Here is just a quick sample of the varied information available through social media: Employment opportunities Historic photos of Sidney Event notices Are you part of the social media conversation? You can find our main social media sites here: Facebook: www.facebook.com/cityofsidneyoh Twitter: www.twitter.com/cityofsidneyoh Crime prevention tips and time sensitive information on wanted criminals in the area Public service announcements Construction updates and road closing announcements LinkedIn: City of Sidney, Ohio Once the City s YouTube following has grown to 00 or more subscribers, it will have a custom link. Until then, visit www.youtube.com and search for City of Sidney, Ohio.
Website Having a professional, polished-looking website was very important to the City of Sidney when it re-vamped its website. Improved navigation, quality content and up-to-date information were also main areas for improvement. The City Government tab is where you will find all information pertaining to local government. From Council member contact information to the latest public meeting agendas uploaded each week. The City Government\Legislation page contains links to a wealth of information about state and local legislation. Locally, the Code of Ordinances is updated annually. For information about recently passed legislation or to read the minutes from previous public meetings, click on Updated Ordinances. The Documents-on-Demand section of the website not only has meeting information, but also contains archived copies of the City Manager s weekly newsletter and detailed reports on the City s finances. The Departments tab is sub-divided by each City department. Whether it is a question about Code Enforcement or signing up to pay your utility bill online, it can all be found neatly organized under this heading. The Businesses and Visitors tabs are uniquely designed for the specific needs of each group. News & Events is where you will want to periodically visit to get the most up-to-date information and news alerts. Have more questions? Check out the Contact Us page for a Who to Call sheet and a complete list of email addresses and phone numbers. Visit www.sidneyoh.com today!
Hyper-Reach and 2-- Hyper-Reach is an emergency notification system that alerts registered participants by way of voice message, text message, TTY (teletype for the hearing impaired) message, or email about local emergencies. Hyper-Reach, by default, will call your home phone number in the event of local emergencies or community alerts, but NOT Weather Alerts (without signing up). The Hyper-Reach system will leave messages on answering machines, and it will re-attempt calls that reach a busy signal or ring-no-answer condi-tion. Participants can register additional information and select Community Alerts to allow your cellular phone, email, and/or TDD to be notified for local emergencies and community alerts as well. Selecting the Weather Alerts option will enable weather notifications to any phone or email address. If you do not opt-in to Weather Alerts, you will not receive them, even on your land-line. To register, simply visit www.sidneyoh.com and click on Emergency Notification System Sign Up. Enter the required information and click Register. Registration is free and easy! The information provided will not be used for any purpose other than community announcements and weather alerts. 2-- is a free and confidential service that helps people across Shelby County find the local resources they need. 2-- operators are there for you 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Helpline of Delaware County, a crisis trained call center that currently provides 2-- service in Delaware, Morrow, Union, and Logan County, will start 2-- service on January, 207, in Shelby County.
Public Participation Citizens participate in and connect with local government in a number of ways. Voting during elections is probably the most widely recognized form of participation, but there are numerous other grassroots ways in which citizens can have a say in the way their local government is operated. Within the City of Sidney there are many opportunities for residents to become more involved. The City has approximately 82 volunteers that serve on some 20 different Boards and Commissions. Those include such diverse groups as the Municipal Airport Advisory Board, the Tree Board and the Zoning Board of Appeals. In fact, there is either a Board or Commission for nearly every aspect of governmental operations. In most cases there are a few simple requirements to fill a board vacancy. Some boards require prior expertise necessary to accomplish the board s objectives, while others allow for a broader background. Some boards require a greater time commitment than others and citizens should have sufficient time available to prepare for and attend meetings. Individuals interested in being considered for a Board appointment should complete and submit to the City Clerk the Board and Commission Member Volunteer Form. Those forms are available online. Public participation is also encouraged at all regular Council meetings, held the second and fourth Monday of each month. Citizens are given the opportunity to address the Council on any item of interest. Also during the discussion on each item on the agenda, members of the audience are asked whether they have any questions or comments about the agenda item. Any persons or group wishing to be on the Council agenda to verbally address the Council should notify either the City Manager or the City Clerk no later than noon on Thursday preceding a regular Council meeting.
