BOWLS NZ GREEN KEEPERS ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER April 2016 Issue No: 3 News from North Otago & South Canterbury We have just held the field days with a good number of green keepers (some from outside the area) in attendance. Going into winter we need to feed the greens to get growth that we need to provide good dense cover, it will also help reduce your Moss situation in the winter months. This cover will also give you a good start to the new season. Topics that were discussed mainly being frequently check the soil moisture visually and by taking a core sample to a depth, this sample will tell you how much watering you need to do depending on how much thatch you have. Hydrocotyle we have the tight small leaf type, this is on most greens visited this season, due the weather conditions, so a spraying programme is to be set up using Grazon, also this will partially hit the clover and small bits of Oxalis. The main requirement at the time of spraying is to have your green in top order and in good growing condition because Grazon will retard its growth. Starweed, Grass will be dealt with by spraying some Polka. Fertiliser to be used in the autumn months should be mainly Sulphate Ammonia so you have some growth by renovations and also to help with recovery. Thatch levels varied but it s the decision on whether to groove or core so should be based on the thatch depth so you are getting below the thatch and keeping the root in the soil. A lot of our greens had some thatch so we will do coring. Greens visited were in great condition with good cover and playing good, only one club had a small problem with heat stress. Planning, organising and budgeting are the key factors for next season and should be on your list now. News from Dunedin Area Hi folks, it great to be able to give you some information from our area. Dunedin greens have benefited heaps this year from a great summer and this has meant that our green keepers have had to be vigilant in terms of keeping water and fertiliser applied to stop drying out and to keep weak areas growing. The Dunedin Bowling Centre has a large program with interclub being run on 5 days each week. This means that any remedial work that is required over the summer period can be difficult. This year with Easter being early the Centre program has been condensed to get through their program. Most greens have been very good and played well. David Howard, our agronomist, has been busy with running field days for us with good attendances each time (20 25). Also he has been producing Management reports for every club giving them a plan for maintenance and fertiliser and pest control for the next 12 months.
