4 SITE VISITS GIZ has made arrangements for site visits at seven different locations in and around Frankfurt. (Please refer to the handout in your conference folder for a complete description of each site and the proposed agenda.) All site visits will take place on Wednesday, October 26 from 8:30 12:30. The sites include: 1. Institute for Development of Quality (IQ), Wiesbaden (Participants: up to 15; Language: English) 2. Institute for Educational Research and Educational Information (DIPF), Frankfurt (Participants: up to 30; Languages: English and Russian) 3. Ministry of Education of the State of Hesse (Participants: up to 25; Language: English) 4. School Visits: Four different schools have been selected based on their various backgrounds and approaches to education. (Participants: up to 10 at each school; Languages: English with one also in Portuguese) Friedrich-Ebert School Helene-Lange School Liebig School Ziehen School For those who wish to participate in the site visits, sign-up sheets will be available outside the conference room during the break and lunch on Monday, October 24. Each site can only accommodate a limited number of participants. If your preferred site is full, you will need to select an alternative one. 5 VENUE The conference will be held at GIZ s Headquarters in Eschborn, Germany. Eschborn is a northwest suburb of Frankfurt located just 20 minutes outside of the city center. The conference will begin with an opening reception on Sunday, October 23 at 19:00 at the Mercure Eschborn Ost Hotel (address below). On-site registration will take place the morning of October 24 at GIZ s Headquarters. EUR 32 Shuttle Service To/From Mercure Hotels to GIZ Headquarters A shuttle service is being provided between the three Mercure hotels and GIZ at various times on each day of the conference. Transportation has also been arranged to/from the Lorsbacher Thal Restaurant on Tuesday and to/from the site visits on Wednesday. See the schedule below for the exact times. It takes approximately 20 minutes on the train to reach downtown Frankfurt (Hauptwache Station). You can purchase tickets from the machine on the train platform. The cost from the Eschborn Sud Station to downtown Frankfurt is EUR 2.40.

8 SHOPPING AND SIGHTSEEING For those interested, below is a list of possible activities in Frankfurt. While all stores are closed on Sundays, many museums are open and sightseeing tours are available. Zeil One of the premiere shopping areas in Germany, Frankfurt s Zeil (often called the The Golden Mile ) offers a wide range of shopping opportunities, from huge department stores to small boutiques. Metro Station: Hauptwache Hours: Monday-Saturday 10:00-20:00; Sunday (closed) Römerberg Römerberg is one of the most traditional areas in downtown Frankfurt. The Römer, Frankfurt s town hall, was reconstructed after World War II and is one of the city s most important historic buildings. The surrounding architecture, fountain, traditional restaurants and shops make this square a favorite among tourists. City Sightseeing Tours Discover the highlights of the cosmopolitan city of Frankfurt during an hour long, narrated sightseeing tour from an open top bus. Purchase tickets at the Tourist Information Center at Römerberg. Hours: Departures daily every 30 minutes from 10:00 17:00 Languages: 10 languages including English and Russian Cost: EUR 15 Museums Take a walk along the Main River which is lined on both sides by some of the best museums in Germany. This area, known as Museum Embankment, has a number of museums including the famous Städel Museum of Art and the Liebighaus, a 19th-century villa with more than 5,000 sculptures on display. 9 GENERAL INFORMATION Currency And Credit Card Germany s national currency is the Euro. Credit cards like Visa, Diners Club, American Express and MasterCard are commonly acknowledged. Exchanging Money On average, the exchange rate is around: 1 USD =.70 EUR 1 EUR = 1.40 USD You can exchange major currencies at the airport or at the reception desk at the Mercure Hotels. Tipping It is customary to give a 10% tip at restaurants, cafes and bars. Time Standard time in Germany is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +2).
