CITY OF MANVEL Parks & Recreation Master Plan Community Meeting Summary The City of Manvel hosted a Community Meeting on June 23, 2016 at the Church of the Harvest. Over 25 community members attended and participated in round table discussions about the future of parks, trails, recreation, and community spaces in Manvel. A project introduction and overview was provided using the attached summary and results of the online community survey were shared (attached). As participants entered they were encouraged to shared their thoughts through a series of brainstorming questions.: WHAT DOES MANVEL MEAN TO YOU? - My life and my future - Home, community and family - A nice place to live - Hoka Hey! Family - Family TO ME PARKS MEAN. - A life line for our community - Family time - Sense of community, healthy living - Fun, good clean fun, picnics, ball games - Open space, kids free-for-all, Serenity - Outdoor fun - A place to gather outdoors - Trees - Family, food, fun - Being outdoors TO ME MANVEL IS. - A city of our future - Good place to live - Peace & quite - Great place to raise a family - Home, 39 years - Peace & quite - Home - A clean slate for development WHAT ARE YOUR DREAMS FOR MANVEL PARKS? - Awesome Splash Pads - Large Gazebo - Butterfly Gardens - Meeting places - Community Center - Library - Picnic tables - Fishing Ponds - Walking trails - Outdoor pools so kids can swim - Bands - Public Pool - Sports Arena - Equestrian Trails - Shelters for shade - Community Centers - Dog Parks - Playground equipment - Gatherings - Connectivity - Walking trails - Places where people can come and find peace and enjoyment - Large trees - Farmers Market The small group discussions centered around the themes: Path, Shelter, Play, and Place. The discussions were lively and resulted in some great ideas for the future of Manvel. Common themes found in the online survey and community meeting include: 1

1. A large park that can serve as a community gathering place and provide an identity/sense of place unique to Manvel a city center. This space could include green space for play and festivals/events, a pavilion/amphitheater, library, community center, food trucks, a place for a farmers market, 2. Connectivity: trails, cycling, equestrian. The bayous are a great starting point for trails. 3. We should think of our roads as parks and connectors. 4. A connection to nature: bayous, prairie, oak trees, birds, butterflies Detailed feedback from round table discussions follows: PLAY Outdoor Activities: Splash pads Splash Pad & South down Splash Pad Splash pad Splash pad Pool Focus on kids pool Pool (hot summer months) City pool not as important Water safety Water park Kayaking need body of water Kayaking Lazy river kayak Paddle boats Wakeboarding Work-out zones Disc Golf Disc golf Fish Fishing (Catch & Grill) Skate park sugar land St. Theresa Skate park Gun range Industrial area Gun range outdoor More playgrounds Playgrounds Mini Golf Camping Tennis courts Adult lawn play Horse shoe Boche ball Dirt Bike Sports Complex: Sports Complex (tournaments) Sports All kinds Sports ALL Sports Complex 4 fields softball, basketball Sports Park softball, basketball Softball complex Football for little leagues Football little league A little league field near every subdivision Little league not enough population yet Dog Park: Dog Park Dog Parks Dog parks Equestrian: Horses must have Equestrian Center Need Public Stables 2

Butterfly Gardens Butterfly gardens Community Gardens Community Gardens Community Garden Community park first Park biggest priority One large park Existing parks are far out / isolated Market Manvel Farmer s Market Farmers Market Library should be included as part of a town/city center. Libraries as community centers and gathering Libraries offer a form of recreation and opportunity for the community to come together in a democratic way (free) Museum of Manvel History History Museum We have no downtown No downtown Need Restaurants Restaurants Food truck Food trucks Old Eddies Ball Room People in Katy would come to Eddie s Ballroom Dance hall Bird sanctuary Brazoria County migratory birds Arboretum Hives for bees Accessibility Bridges/ ponds PLACE Other: Acquire the land go back to nature! Vacant Property Across Eddie s Property Gates Family Private nature park Large land area challenge Eddie s Property Nature Center Reinvigorate Eddie s ROW is an Issue More Infrastructure water/sewer Use watersheds Jack Brooks Park Canon City River Walk Natatorium in Pearland Seniors Natural area Certificate Pearland Tax Inventive Maintenance 3

Trails: Interconnectivity Connectivity Connectivity & mobility Trails to connect communities Would like trails along bayous to connect to community Most parks are connected to Mustang Bayou (great opportunity) Connect through gulf coast canal Interconnect Future Parks Bike trails Cycling Bicycle clubs (Old Manvel) Create high speed bike trails Horse trails Historic horse trail Walking paths Trails of different use (bike, walk, horses) Large Trails Nature trails (butterfly) PATH Safety: I would love a place to walk safely. There isn t a safe road in Manvel unless you live in a master plan community. Walking and jogging (Safely) 1128 / Dell Bella Rd. (bicycling trail) Point to point trails not at street level Dangerous Roads, Jordan, Hwy 6, S. Masters Running stop signs 1128 No shoulder 1128 is one of the few roads that has a shoulder 1128 one street bike lane Sugar Land south side University Drive 4
