EVER CHANGING Always ICONIC In 1630 Robert Sidney, 2nd Earl of Leicester, acquired four acres in St. Martin s Field. By 1635 he had built himself a large residence, Leicester House, at the northern end. After a row with local parishioners, Lord Leicester was ordered to keep part of his land, Leicester Field open for the public. This was the origin of Leicester Square. The Square is, and always has been, one of London s most celebrated. A world renowned address at the very centre of London s West End, it has seen many changes over its rich and colourful history. It has been home to earls and kings, scientists and artists, entertainers and entrepreneurs. It is the scene of duels and duets, theatre and film. Ever changing, always iconic, Leicester Square is truly unique, with a heritage shaped by events spanning nearly 400 years.
