What is the Motability Scheme? The Motability Scheme provides a simple way to lease a new car, scooter or powered wheelchair without the worry of owning and running one. Since it began in 1978, the Motability Scheme has helped millions of disabled people and their families gain independence and freedom. The Motability Scheme is operated by Motability Operations Ltd under contract to Motability. Motability is a national charity which oversees the Motability Scheme and may be able to provide charitable grants to disabled people who would otherwise be unable to afford the car, adaptations or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) they need. With the Motability Scheme, I can go to the shops, take Gethin out for the day and also regain some of my freedom. Ali
Who can join the Motability Scheme? The Motability Scheme is available to people who receive one of the following allowances, with at least 12 months remaining: Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA). Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP). War Pensioners Mobility Supplement (WPMS). Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP). How does the Motability Scheme work? With Motability, all or part of your client s mobility allowance is transferred to Motability Operations Ltd for the duration of the lease period. If your client decides that the Motability Scheme is right for them, there are a few steps they need to take in order to lease a new car, scooter or powered wheelchair: 1 2 3 Choose a vehicle test drive it and consider adaptations Search for dealers and apply to join the Motability Scheme at the dealership Order the vehicle The vehicle must be used by, or for the benefit of, the disabled person. Cars on the Motability Scheme A car can be leased for three years on the Motability Scheme. What s included? The lease of a new vehicle with: Insurance. Servicing and maintenance. Full breakdown assistance. 20,000 mileage allowance per year of lease. Window and windscreen repair or replacement. Many adaptations at no extra cost. Replacement tyres. Some cars are available at less or no more than the cost of the weekly allowance, while other, more expensive cars require an additional payment (known as an Advance Payment) to cover the cost of the lease. Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles on the Motability Scheme Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAVs) can be leased for five years. WAVs enable the disabled person to travel as a passenger whilst seated in their wheelchair. Drive-from-wheelchair vehicles are also available and enable the disabled person to drive without needing to transfer to a seat. What s included? The lease of a new vehicle with: Insurance. Servicing and maintenance. Full breakdown assistance. 20,000 mileage allowance per year of lease. Window and windscreen repair or replacement. Many adaptations at no extra cost. Replacement tyres. Car Adaptations Adaptations are available through the Motability Scheme to help make travelling as comfortable and safe as possible. Adaptations are available to help with: Vehicle Access to help get in and out of a car, with swivel seats, extended door opening angle, rise and fall transfer plates and person hoists. Equipment Loading to help load and store equipment without needing to manually lift. Electronic hoists are available to store wheelchairs and scooters in the boot of the car. Wheelchairs which fold manually can also be stored in a box on the roof of the car. Driving including steering, braking and acceleration; for example steering balls, push/pull hand controls and electronic as well as left foot accelerators, easy-release handbrakes and infrared controls. Scooters and Powered Wheelchairs on the Motability Scheme A scooter or powered wheelchair can be leased for three years; some powered wheelchairs can be leased for five years. What s included? The lease of a new scooter or powered wheelchair with: Insurance. Breakdown assistance. Servicing, maintenance and repairs. Tyre and battery replacement. What s right for your client? Scooters A scooter may be best if your client: Has reasonable sitting balance. Can transfer from a sitting to standing position independently. Can drive the scooter without needing any help. Has sufficient shoulder and arm strength and movement to operate a handle bar style control. Has sufficient vision, perception and hearing to operate. Powered Wheelchairs A powered wheelchair may be best if your client: Doesn t feel confident getting on and off seats. Cannot safely use a handle bar style control unit. Needs dual controls (where someone else helps to control the powered wheelchair). Can only operate a joystick control. I can get out of the house to take my dog for a walk. Joan
