Cottage & Area The Seashore Cottage is located in a side arm of the Kenmare River. This side arm is called Kilmakilloge Harbour. The Kenmare River itself is located (as well as the cottage) in the southwest and it is not a river but a narrow, long bay. It is situated between the Bantry Bay (south) and the Dingle Bay (north). The landscape in the southwest of Ireland is a unique combination of cliffs and mountains rising from the sea with an aboundous vegetation including Mediterranean plants like Rhododendrons, which is caused by the mild climate that is provided by the gulf stream. This diversity can be particularly seen along the Ring of Beara, which some guidebooks call an insider tip. The cottage is located at the bottom of the Collorus mountain, which is close to the small village of Lauragh. From the Ring of Beara, the road runs over a small hill to the end of the bay where the Seashore Cottage is found directly at the sea side. With high tide, it is only a small step from the garden gate into the Atlantic Ocean. The picture on the right shows the cottage from the other side of the bay. The other picture shows the view from the end of the bay into Kenmare River - with the mountains of the Iveragh peninsula (Ring of Kerry) in the back. From the small hill between the cottage and the Ring of Beara, you have a marvelous view on Kilmakilloge Habour and the mountains of the Iveragh peninsula in the north.
Rooms The Seashore Cottage is a two-storied building. On the ground floor, there is the main room (combined living room and kitchen) as well as washroom, a 2nd toilet, and a small bedroom. The two bigger bedrooms are upstairs. The main room in the ground floor is a living space that combines kitchen, livingroom and diningroom. From the room, you have a wonderful view on Kilmakilloge Harbour. The big windows invite you to watch the nature during breakfast and dinner as well. There is a big variety of sea birds as well as herons and songbirds. We have seen seals and even swans (indeed!). Enjoy a quite and relaxing evening in front of the warming oven in the living room. Reflecting the events of the day with a cold Guinness or a warm tea, time will pass quickly...
The The well-equipped kitchen is a part of the main room, which allows participating in conversations while preparing meals, tea, or coffee. With fridge, freezer, coffee machine, toaster, oven, cooking stove, electric kettle, microwave, cooking dishes, kitchenware, and other accessories, you have all the tools to make your day a culinary pleasure as well. The comfortable washroom is equipped with bath tub and shower as well as toilet, bidet, and washbasin. Just beside the washroom is another toilet room. The two bigger bedrooms are upstairs. Both rooms are equipped with king-size beds (1.8m wide), spacious closets, desserts, and commode. There is an additional bed in one of the rooms, e.g., to allow a small child sleeping close to his parent. Finally, there is a third bedroom on the ground floor. Beside closet and commode you will find a comfortable, traditional Irish double bed (1.30m wide - which might be considered relatively small to non Irish persons who might be used to wider beds).
Directions As well as all ways lead you to Rome, a lot of ways lead you to Ireland. Basically you have to possibilities to come to the island: Over the sea or by plain. The most ways to the island that are proposed here starts in Germany, because these are the ways, we know. - If you have som good ideas and/or own experience of ways to come to ireland using other ways, you can send us that hint and we can add it to this page. With an air plain to Ireland Hahn > Kerry Since Ryan Air the journey from Germany and other parts of the world has become more easy: Booking Online, drive to Hahn (or another airport) and fly to Kerry (this airport is located near Faranfore, approx 15 minutes away from Killarney, rent a car (e.g., from Hertz or from the Sixt partner Irish-Car-Rentals) and drive on the left over Killarney (see below) and Kenmare to the Cottage. You can reach Irelands southwest also in a good way using the Airport Shannon, but we cannot give hints here, because we didn t used it. At this position a small hint for persons, who drive the first time on the left: The feeling within the car is first a bit confusing, because of the big part of the car on the left of the steering-wheel. After a while it will become better and because of the concentration the most people that we know accustomed relatively fast to the new situation. Kerry > Killarney > Kenmare From the Airport Kerry near Faranfore you drive with direction Killarney approx. 15 minutes till Killarney. There you drive on the N71 with direction Bantry Bay through the Killarney National Park and a peace of the Ring of Kerry to Kenmare.
With the ferry boat to Ireland If you have a bit more baggage or you want to take something like a a surfboard with you you can also travel to Ireland using a ferry boat. The routes that we know goes over France or over France and Great Britain to Ireland. Cherbourg > Rosslare The route of the ferry boat goes from Cherbourg (northwest of France) to Rosslare (southeast of Ireland). If you want to avoid the trafic jam arround Paris you can drive over the land through Reims, Soissons, Bouvais, Compienie and Rouen. For the whole journey from Saarbrücken to Cherbourg you'll need approx. 10 hours (without longer stops). The journey with the ferry boat will than take about 18 hours (including the time zone correction) and includes a night. It is usefull to take a cabine, because while the ferry is on the sea, the cars cannnot be accessed. Calais > Folkstone > Pembroke > Rosslare As an alternative to the long trip with the ferry to Ireland it is possible to use the Eurotunnel from France to Great Britain, goes over Great Britain and with a short ferry trip (4 hours) to Ireland. Rosslare > Kenmare From Rosslare you follow the signs with direction Wexford and than with direction Cork. Afterwards you drive on with direction Killarney. If you come from Cork the best way is to take the R569 with direction Kilgarvan and Kenmare. The road can be driven up to Kenmare.
To the Seashore Cottage Kenmare > Seashore Cottage Within the City take the Road with directionbantry Bay / Glengariff / Lauragh. Short after you cross a bridge there is a road on the right: The R571 with direction Castletownbere. This road should be taken and leads you (after approx. 20 to 30 minutes) through the village Lauragh (the houses are wide spread, but you'll find Lauragh with the village signs). A few kilometers behind Lauragh on a hilltop you must turn right to a country lane whitch guides you down the hill. to the Kilmakilloge Harbour. Because of a small shop with traditional irish crafts there is a sign with the galic and englisch texts SLÍ NA MARA and KNITWEAR & CRAFTS. A picture of this crossing is shown here. You'll see on that way a few small cottages. When you drive down the hill it becomes i bit more flat after a short time. Short before you'll reach the end of the bay and cross it on a stone way, that looks like a bridge at hight tide, there is the cottage on the right hand side. - Welcome!
