ABOUT THE AREA History of Potts Point & Kings Cross Potts Point and the surrounding area has a rich history, reflected in its grand Georgian mansions and architectural monuments built in the 1800s and early 1900s. Named for Joseph Hyde Potts, the area was originally part of a land grant, owned by Alexander Macleay, who was the New South Wales Colonial Secretary from 1826 to 1837. Next door to Potts Point is Kings Cross, colloquially known as The Cross. Once known for its grand theatres and music halls, the area was transformed by the influx of WWII troops, returning to and visiting the nearby naval base at Garden Island. In 1897 the intersection where the Coca- Cola billboard stands today was named Queen s Cross, in celebration of Queen Victoria s diamond jubilee. This caused some confusion with Queen s Square in the city, and so was re- named Kings Cross in 1905, after King Edward VII. Kings Cross achieved notoriety in the 1920 s due to the Razor Gang wars led by rival brothel owners, Tilly Devine and Kate Leigh. The Razor Gang was aptly named, as razors became the weapon of choice after the New South Wales State Parliament passed the Pistol Licensing Act (NSW) in 1927. Severe penalties were imposed for anyone caught carrying concealed firearms and handguns. Potts Point & Kings Cross Today Potts Point is located a short walk, train or bus ride away from some of Sydney's most popular attractions, including Circular Quay, The Rocks, Darling Harbour and Pitt Street shopping mall. The area has an abundance of cafes, bars, restaurants and nightclubs, all within walking distance. You ll find a great range of trendy restaurants on Victoria Street and Macleay Street, or head to Darlinghurst Road and Bayswater Road for late night bars and nightclubs. As well as numerous dining options, Macleay Street has plenty of clothing boutiques, homewares shops and specialty stores. Above the intersection of William Street and Darlinghurst Road is the iconic Coca- Cola billboard, usually referred to simply as the Coke Sign. This sign marks the entrance to The Cross and the red- light district. The right side was erected in 1974 and the left side was a later addition, in 1990. Located at the entrance to the Fitzroy Gardens, on the corner of Darlinghurst Road and Macleay Street is the El Alamein Memorial Fountain. The fountain was commissioned as a memorial to soldiers who died in WWII, during two battles at El Alamein, Egypt, in 1942. Since its addition in 1959, the Fountain has become a well- known landmark of Kings Cross, and often serves as a meeting point for locals and visitors alike. 7

GETTING AROUND SYDNEY By Foot From the Coke Sign in Kings Cross, you can walk to the CBD in about 15 minutes. To do so, head straight down William Street and you will reach Hyde Park; Circular Quay is another 15 minutes from Hyde Park. From the Coke Sign in the other direction, walk down Darlinghurst Road or Victoria Street and you ll reach Oxford Street. This should also take about 15 minutes. By Taxi You can hail a taxi from the street, or have Reception call one for you. Taxis can be expensive, so feel free to ask our Reception staff if there is public transport available to your destination. 3am and 3pm are shift change over times, so you might find it harder to get a taxi around these times. By Train Kings Cross, on the T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra Line, is the closest train station to Hotel Challis. Alight at Martin Place for a central place to explore the CBD and to get to Circular Quay. From Kings Cross Station, Bondi is the other direction. If you re going to the beach, change to a bus at Bondi Junction. Grab an Opal Card from the train station or an Opal Card retailer. Top up with money and simply tap on the card reader at the beginning and end of each train journey. By Bus The main buses that run through Kings Cross are Nos. 200, 323, 324, 325 and 326. A nightride bus N100 runs to the city every 30 minutes from 12.57am to 4.57am, and to Bondi Junction from 1am to 5am. Sydney buses are cash- free; you ll need to buy a ticket at a newsagent displaying the purple bus sign. If travelling after 7pm or before 7am, you can pay cash on boarding. By Ferry The majority of Sydney Ferries leave from Circular Quay and Darling Harbour. Ferries can take you across the Harbour to popular destinations such as Balmain, Cockatoo Island, Double Bay, Manly and Taronga Zoo. 8

Then head over to the restaurants at the Overseas Passenger Terminal for views of the Opera House while dining.
