GET WISE OR GET HURT. Counting the Costs Accident Statistics 1999 The 1999 Accident Figures Age of purchase 1999 was an exceptional year for firework sales in Great Britain. In the October/ November selling period, there was a 40% increase across the UK product range. Not surprisingly therefore there was an increase in injuries caused by fireworks from 831 in 1998 to 1056, i.e. around 20% up on 1998. The increase in accident figures shows just how important it is that a concerted and highly coordinated publicity campaign gets off the ground in the run up to November 5th this year. Looking Ahead This year the firework safety campaign reiterates all the key messages aimed at promoting a safe and enjoyable bonfire night. The main focus of the campaign, however, is child safety. This theme has been chosen because over 50% of firework related injuries happen to children aged 15 or younger. Sparkler injuries continue to happen around 134 last year, showing that it is important to remind parents and carers once again that sparklers really are fireworks too. We are addressing this issue through our work with the Child Accident Prevention Trust. The 1999 Bonfire Night Firework Accident Statistics in Detail The main statistics, including a breakdown by region and individual NHS Trust, are set out in the following pages.
