ON THE TRAIL OF THE TUDORS Tudor Adventurers And Explorers

Itinerary During Tudor times, England cemented its position as one of the great seafaring nations. From his Palace of Placentia at Greenwich, Henry VIII established the naval dockyards at nearby Deptford and Woolwich. His daughter Elizabeth I continued the naval tradition and Greenwich was the site for launch parties for the many voyages of exploration. This tour centres on some of England s most famous seafarers and adventurers and includes Sir Walter Raleigh, Sir Francis Drake, Sir Richard Grenville and Sir John Hawkins. The Tour will follow their stories through their ups and downs to discover the truths, the myths and the legends that surround them. Day 1 Arrival at Heathrow Day 2 Day 3 National Maritime Museum, Greenwich The Dockyards at Portsmouth Day 4 Sherborne Castle Day 4 Day 5 Buckland Abbey, Plymouth & Exeter New Forest Day 7 Southampton & the Solent

Day 1 Arrival into Heathrow Airport On your arrival you will be met by your Ambient Tours tour leader and then transferred, by coach, to your hotel in Greenwich. Check in on arrival and enjoy time to orientate yourself with your hotel, walk in the grounds of Greenwich Park or simply relax after your flight. In the evening you will receive a welcome drink and a chance to meet your fellow travellers, receive a tour briefing from our tour leader and collect your itinerary, before dinner at the hotel.

Day 2 Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich After breakfast in the hotel, you will visit the Old Royal Naval College, the centrepiece of Maritime Greenwich and designated as a world heritage site. The buildings you will visit originally housed Greenwich Hospital founded in 1694 as the Royal Naval Hospital for sailors. It was built on the site of the Royal Palace of Placentia, a favourite of the Tudor Royal family and birthplace of Henry VIII and his daughters Elizabeth I and Mary I. Greenwich was a favoured residence of Elizabeth and was the site for launch parties for the many voyages of exploration undertaken by the likes of Drake, Raleigh and Hawkins. Your Tudor themed tour of this magnificent site will explain the importance of Greenwich and the part it played in the development of the British Naval traditions and how the heroics of Tudor seafarers like Sir Richard Grenville paved the way for Horatio Nelson whose body was laid in State in the Painted Hall before being taken upriver for his State funeral at St Paul s Cathedral. After the your private Tour, we will have lunch after which you will have plenty of free time to wander at leisure through the grounds, visit historic Greenwich village or take a return trip up river before returning to you hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 3 Visit to the Historic Dockyard, Portsmouth Pack your suitcases before breakfast at the hotel. You will picked up by your coach for the journey to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. During our private tour, we will visit the Mary Rose Museum to see the artefacts that were discovered when Henry VIII s flagship was raised from the Solent in 1982. The hull of the Mary Rose is on public display in its new permanent home. We will also see HMS Victory the flagship of Lord Nelson, The Royal Navy Museum and the famous harbour The tour will be followed by a light lunch and then you will board your coach for the onward journey to your hotel in the countryside nearby. Check in and have some free time to look around the hotel and its facilities before dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4 Visit to Sherborne Castle, Dorset Pack your suitcases before breakfast at the hotel. You will picked up by your coach for the journey to Exeter by way of Sherborne Castle. Sir Walter Raleigh erected a house on the site in 1594, naming it Sherborne Lodge. The land was acquired from the Bishop of Salisbury through the use of his royal influence. The rectangular, four storey house with its hexagonal corner turrets forms the core of the present Castle. When Raleigh was executed on the block in 1616, his lands were forfeited to the crown and Sherborne was purchased from James I in 1617 by Sir John Digby, an ancestor of the family who own the castle today. Our private tour will by followed by a light lunch before we board our coach for the onward journey to Exeter in Devon. Check in at your hotel and relax and enjoy some free time before dinner and overnight.

Day 5 Tour of Plymouth and Buckland Abbey, Devon After breakfast at the hotel, you will board your coach for our visit to Buckland Abbey and Plymouth. The County of Devon has a rich seafaring heritage Raleigh, Drake and Hawkins were all born in the Plymouth area. Grenville was also born nearby. Buckland Abbey was ceded to the Grenville family by Henry VIII after the dissolution of the monasteries. The famous seafarer and adventurer, Sir Richard Grenville was born there in 1542 and sold the Abbey to Sir Francis Drake in 1581. During our private tour we will have an opportunity to see a collection of artefacts associate with Drake including the famous Drake s Drum. The tour will be followed by lunch. You will then board your coach for a short visit to nearby Plymouth. We will visit the key sights including the harbour and Plymouth Hoe where tradition has it that Drake finished his game of bowls before sailing to engage the Spanish Armada. From Plymouth we will continue our journey back to our hotel in Exeter for dinner and overnight..

Day 6 Visit to The New Forest, Hampshire Pack your suitcases before breakfast in the hotel. After breakfast we will leave by coach for our overnight stay at our country house hotel in the Hampshire countryside. On our way, we will stop for a traditional West Country pub lunch. After lunch we will board our coach for the onward journey to our hotel in the middle of the picturesque New Forest. You will have plenty of time to unwind, enjoy the hotels facilities or to take a leisurely forest walk before your Tudor themed dinner and overnight stay.

Day 7 Visit to Southampton & the Solent Pack your suitcases before breakfast in the hotel. After breakfast we will leave by coach for the short journey to nearby Southampton. Southampton s old town has played its part in the history of England and you can walk in the footsteps of Philip of Spain who heard Mass there before his marriage, in 1554, to Queen Mary I; or the Pilgrim Fathers whose ships the Mayflower and Speedwell left the port for the New World before their unscheduled stop in Plymouth; or the passengers in the ill-fated Titanic who set off on their unfinished journey in 1912. Alternatively, you might want just want to take advantage of the excellent shopping centre. After lunch your coach will transfer you to the airport for your journey home.
