Actualizing the World s Largest and Asia s First Hydrogen Grid Airport Achieving an environmentally advanced airport and dominating the world market of hydrogen-related industries New Kansai International Airport Company, Ltd. (NKIAC) has been actively working on environmental projects, including the generation of power from clean types of energy, such as solar energy and hydrogen energy, and improvements in the efficiency of energy use, under its Smart Island KIX Environmental Plan in pursuit of being an environmentally advanced airport provided with environment-friendliness and safety. NKIAC has recently decided to start a hydrogen grid project on a full scale as one of the pillars of the Smart Island KIX Environmental Plan with support from the government by utilizing the system of the Kansai Innovation International Strategic Comprehensive Special Zone(*) and under the cooperation of all stakeholders. Hydrogen as an ultimate clean energy resource has been attracting a great deal of attention. The hydrogen grid project is Japan s first demonstration project for the large-scale introduction of hydrogen energy to airport facilities. This project aims to construct a model of hydrogen energy utilization in the airport community by infrastructure improvements, including the introduction of fuel cell forklifts to the warehouses of the airport and the construction of hydrogen supply facilities, for the next three years. The project will proactively introduce fuel cell forklifts, which Toyota Motor Corporation and Toyota Industries Co., Ltd. have been jointly developing currently, to the warehouses of the Kansai International Airport, while Iwatani International Corporation will develop necessary hydrogen-related infrastructure, including hydrogen supply facilities. Furthermore, the project will continue installing a full-fledged hydrogen station near the second-phase terminal area with a view to a spread of fuel cell vehicles in the future. In addition, the project will steadily make efforts toward the further introduction of hydrogen energy to the airport, including the consideration of hydrogen energy supply in the second-phase terminal area and the construction of an energy management system for the airport island. Immediate plans: Fiscal 2014 to 2015 Introducing two fuel cell forklifts, developing small-scale hydrogen supply equipment, and implementing the demonstration project at airport facilities, such as KIX-Medica (a communal constant temperature warehouse for medical products) and warehouses. Installing a full-fledged liquefied hydrogen station. Up to fiscal 2016 Installing hydrogen supply equipment (dispensers) inside the warehouses along with liquid hydrogen storage facilities and high-pressure hydrogen piping and starting the full-fledged introduction of fuel cell forklifts in sequence.

Fuel cells generate electric power as a result of the chemical reaction of hydrogen with the oxygen in the air, the development of which as a technology to reduce CO2 emissions and support energy resource diversification is making progress for practical use for automobiles. Hydrogen is expected as a power source for industrial vehicles, including forklifts, as well. In pursuit of the practical use of hydrogen energy as ultimate clean energy in anticipation of the arrival of a full-fledged hydrogen energy society, Toyota Motor Corporation, Iwatani International Corporation, and Toyota Industries Corporation have been advancing the spread of hydrogen energy by using the hydrogen supply chain at the Kansai International Airport as a model case. * Support from the government to this project and utilization of the Special Zone. Ministry of the Environment: Support to the development of fuel cell forklifts and construction of hydrogen infrastructure (utilizing a technology development and demonstration project for countermeasures of reinforced induction type against CO 2 emissions) Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry: Support to the installation of hydrogen station (utilizing subsidies for a project of developing hydrogen supply equipment and a project of subsidizing hydrogen supply equipment for fuel cell vehicles) Kansai Innovation International Strategic Comprehensive Special Zone: The promotion of deregulation, preferential taxation etc.
