From the rugged Pacific coast to the world-renowned beaches along the Caribbean Sea, Mexico has much to offer for the seafaring explorer. Kayak, fish, and surf in the powerful Pacific, always keeping an eye out for the blue whales that make this coast their home. Hike along craggy cliffs visit historic villages, and search out prehistoric settlements. On the Caribbean, skip touristy Cancun in favor of the relaxed local islands or the Riviera Maya s endless beaches and more sophisticated scene. Dive along the world s second largest barrier reef and wander majestic Mayan ruins.
LA PAZ First inhabited by Neolithic hunter-gatherers at least 10,000 years ago, the area around Baja California s capital city is rife with prehistoric rock paintings, even quite near the city. Spend a day seeking them out, hiking up into the region s rocky terrain, and then head back to the centre of the city, an a palm-lined neighborhood that blends modern port and quiet colonial outpost. Visit the Museo Regional de Antropologia e Historia to get a better picture of the peninsula s history, stretching from the ancient settlers all the way through the Mexican-American War and the 1910 revolution. Stroll along the waterfront promenade, taking in the stunning views across the Sea of Cortez. Just south of the city, visit the lovely Bahai de los Muertos, a perfect spot for a beach walk and a picnic lunch. Cabo San Lucas Known as the Jewel of the Baja Peninsula, this lively, upscale resort town on the southern tip of the ruggedly beautiful peninsula overlooks some of the most stunning Pacific Ocean views Mexico has to offer. PUERTO BALANDRA Puerto Balandra is a beautiful cove where rocky arms encircle a brilliant white, sandy beach with several smaller inviting beaches tucked into small niches. Its interior is a salt lagoon with a mushroom shaped rock called El Hongo (the mushroom) which has become the symbol of the area and La Paz. In the lagoon, you ll find thousands of multicoloured tropical fish, coral, and larger fish such as tuna, striped mullet, dogfish, and green sharks. The area is ideal for snorkeling, lagoon kayaking, kiteboarding, or beach combing. LOS ISLOTES Enjoy an afternoon on the anchor around the small island, home to hundreds of sea lions. Look out over the magnificent deep blues of the Sea of Cortez before, if you re feeling brave, diving amongst the large animals, known for being comfortable with divers. Nearby, the islands of Espiritu Santo and Partida are separated by the crater of Caleta Partida, making for some fascinating underwater topography. The islands are an ecological preserve and home to many varieties of tropical fish, bird life, flora and fauna that can only be found in the Sea of Cortez. Toward the inside of the cove two white sand spits come together to form a beautiful array of deep blue to turquoise coloured water. Explore the rugged coastline s spectacular caves, and while away the hours kayaking, kiteboarding, and jet skiing.
