ELECTIVES New Electives Program This year Coveleigh camp has introduced a new elective program. In performing arts, campers learn theater, popular dances and tap into their creativity. The sculpture elective allows campers to make amazing art projects while experiencing and exploring different mediums. Another elective is multisport where favorite sports will be played daily. This includes basketball, frisbee football, kickball, running bases and more! Then there is science elective where easy, safe and fun experiments are performed daily. During cooking, campers spend an hour learning culinary tips while preparing and testing snacks. The camp also offers crafts and cartooning. Jewelry making/lanyard/braiding is another popular elective. Campers get the chance to use their creativity to design and make jewelry and other fun accessories! Book club/camp online newsletter is where the first online camp newspaper is created. In technology, you get to use the high tech Apple products to create movies and much more! Tennis is so fun! It is led by the tennis pros here at Coveleigh. There are also other electives offered such as waterfront, karate and soccer. If these electives appeal to you, make sure you sign up early because all campers agree they are lots and lots of fun! Kirsten, the art teacher is demonstrating how to begin one of their projects 2
Coveleigh Counselors Chris is a new counselor here at Coveleigh. So far he really likes his summer job and is happy with the counselors and kids he is working with. As a tween myself, I can say he is a great counselor and should continue coming back to Coveleigh. Chris is really looking forward to going on the field trips with the tweens. Connor has been working here for three glorious years. He loves all of his fellow counselors and he loves all the campers. Connor enjoys taking part in the activities with the campers and the campers love Connor. They are constantly around him trying to get his attention. Brendan has been working here for four years. "Counseling is my life's passion," he says. The best part about coming to camp everyday for him is when he has to sign in the campers. He loves seeing their shining faces everyday. He also mentioned that he is 6' 3, which is the same height as fellow Tween counselor Connor. This is Mr. Riley. Mr. Riley is the new sculpture teacher working along side Kirsten. He has been teaching art for 5 years, but this is his first year at Coveleigh. Mr. Riley said, "I look forward to kids stretching their imagination further then they have ever gone before and making some cool art projects!!!" Kirsten is a new art teacher here at Coveleigh. We asked, What s your favorite thing to teach the campers?" Kirsten responded, I'm a ceramic artist so I like to teach the campers to model clay, but here at Coveleigh, I like to teach straw weaving. Kirsten likes working with all age groups for different reasons. She likes the Sandpipers because they are so cute and the Tweens are easy to work with. All of the campers are so much fun. Next, we asked her, "Out of all the places in Coveleigh where is your favorite place in Coveleigh?" she said, "I love the beach! I don't get to go on the beach, but if I had a free day I would definitely go on the beach. 3
New Facility A big event that occurred this winter was that we just redid our camp facility. A lot has changed since last summer. For example the art room, there are two different rooms so you can have two classes going at the same time. Also, the camp now provides computers to use during the technology elective. This is where campers will learn how to edit and make movies and create the camp newsletters. Also, there are new tables in the art room. The whole building was painted. Another thing is that the each camp group has a better and bigger space to store their belongings and handouts on a rainy day. We also have new bathrooms this year, and they are much cleaner. 4
Camper Perspective We had a chance to ask young camper some questions. "What's your favorite thing to do at the camp?" He responded, " I love to do sports." "What kind of sports do you like to do tennis or sports with Mike?" He said, " I like fun sports with Mike the sports instructor." Then we asked him, " Can you give us a list of friends you play with?" He said, " Gavin, Teddy, Kieran, Charlie, Chris." Preston is in his second year at Coveleigh camp and also second year as a tween. He is excited for the tennis elective and pretty much any sport elective. His favorite part of camp is sports because he says they are lots of fun. His favorite sports are basketball and lacrosse. During my interview with Preston, he was bummed that it was a rainy day outside and was upset he was missing his electives, but he said that they were still having a lot of fun inside playing games. 5
