In 1944, Carentan, strategcal area n Bae des Veys, had to be quckly lberated by Amercan 101st Arborne paratroopers n order to jon Utah and Omaha beaches. HERITAGE Typcal marshland LIGHTER BOAT AND FORGE OF TRIBEHOU Ths s the story of the earth, water and fre Wth the earth and water we shape houses, on marshland waters we sal by barge, wth fre and water we forge, wth water we extngush fre thanks to the fre pump (1908). In 1988, durng the dtchng of channels along the road to St. Georges de Bohon, t was removed from the mud and then exposed n 1991 under a shelter of land and Rotz (mxture of reeds and sedge). The barges are flat-bottomed boats, allowng easy passage nto the sometmes shallow marsh. They are bult manly of wood n oak or elm, a length of 11-17 m. Two major projects to Trbehou flourshed between 1800 and 1854 gvng work to 10 carpenters and 53 boatmen. Snce the Mddle Ages, the boats brought back the muddy sand of the Bay of Veys for land fertlzng and returnng wth goods (lme, brcks...). Free access all year long.
