Surfing spots and a natural water slide are highlights of a Penobscot River trip. The Kennebec River: A deep water gorge where compression waves create a continuous roller coaster ride for nearly six miles. The Alleyway and the most famous rapid, Magic Falls, offer some of the largest breaking waves in the Northeast. The last six miles of the ride mellows a bit and guests get to swim and paddle duckies alongside their rafts. RIPOGENUS GORGE extends from deep in Ripogenus Lake to the Cribworks Rapid. Whitewater rafters revere this Class V section for Exterminator, The Staircase, The Heaters, The Little Eddy and Bailing Eddy Rapids. THE CRIBWORKS is Maine s most famous Class V rapid. Named for the huge cribwork dams from the historic log drives, it stands out today as one of the most challenging commercially rafted rapids east of the Mississippi River. BIG AMBEJACKMOCKAMUS FALLS, Big A, is a sharp S-bend in the river which builds from Class I to Class IV in the first of three drops that make up the rapid. The second and third drops offer fine surfing opportunities for rafters and kayakers alike. NESOWADNEHUNK FALLS is the biggest single drop on the Penobscot River, loved by rafters, kayakers, and fishermen. Landlocked salmon can be seen jumping up the 10-foot drop during the annual spawning migration. It affords a great opportunity for surfing, climbing behind the falls, and fly fishing. ABOL FALLS is a rocky Class II-III rapid that follows the Abol Deadwater. Two great hydraulics often soak rafters and somersault kayakers. It ends in a calm pool beside a large eddy on the right with a beautiful sandy beach and easy road access. BIG POCKWOCKAMUS FALLS is one of the longer rapids on the Penobscot River. Guides guests, and kayakers love it. It is a great rapid for learning to kayak, swimming in whitewater, or just enjoying the roller coaster ride over the waves. THE NEVERS CORNER rafting takeout lies just a quarter mile after the end of Big Pockwockamus Falls, arguably the most exciting rapid encountered in the morning.
