[3] Part 3 Reading & Listening 1 ENW 322 Location 1 Getting There Read the title for the 1st part of this special Luxembourg podcast! Next read the three statements below. What do you think is the answer? If you are not sure - GUESS! Choose YES' or NO! A: The biggest city in Luxembourg is also called Luxembourg. B: The only way into Luxembourg is by train. C: Half of all workers in Luxembourg commute from outside. Location 1 GAP FILL Read / Listen to Location 1. What is the correct answer for each space? Write one word in each space. Reaching Luxembourg Good afternoon and welcome to Luxembourg Station, which is in the city of Luxembourg, which is conveniently located in the 1: of Luxembourg! ENW has just arrived from Brussels in Belgium, as the easiest way to reach the tiny European nation of Luxembourg is by 2:. Setting off from Brussels Central Station the journey here took 3hrs 45 min and involved 17 stops! The train 3: was also very reasonable - just 73 return! The main station in Luxembourg is the 4: spot in the city as every day around 80,000 people get on and off trains right here. Interestingly, because Luxembourg is such a small country with a 5: of under 600,000 around 50% of the people who work daily in Luxembourg commute in from Germany, France or Belgium. This is not quite the first time ENW has visited Luxembourg, but as the only other time was when we were travelling to 6: on a school trip and our only stop here was to use the toilets at a motorway service station! The weather is, as to be expected, freezing cold and there has been light 7: falling all morning. The time is just after 12:30 and so after a spot of lunch ENW will then need to find our hotel. But, where is Rue du Fort Wedell? 1 Where exactly is ENW at the beginning? 2 How much was the train ticket? 3 How long was the travel time from Brussels? 4 What is the population of the country? 5 What is the name of the street where ENW s hotel is on?

[4] Location 2 Part 3 Reading & Listening 2 ENW 322 Vianden Read the title for the 2nd part of this special Luxembourg podcast! Next read the three statements below. What do you think is the answer? If you are not sure - GUESS! Choose YES' or NO! A: Vianden Castle was the inspiration for Castle Dracula. B: The castle was originally built between the 11th & 13th Centuries. C: There are no train links between Luxembourg and Vianden. Location 2 Wrong Word! Read / Listen to Location 2. Circle the six mistakes in the text. Then write the correct words below. A Tiny, Romantic Village with A Castle After an afternoon of strolling around the city of Luxembourg yesterday, today ENW has left the Duchy s smallest town and travelled north by bus to the small village of Vianden. The stunningly beautiful mountain village only has a population of 1,864. But the reason ENW has jumped on the letter 67 bus and paid our 13 ticket is to visit one of the most beautiful gothic designed castles in the world - Vianden Castle. First built in the 11th Century it took more than 300 years to finish and has been the home of the Cats of Vianden since then. In the 18th Century a combination of fires, earthquakes and invading armies helped repair much of the castle. It wasn t until 1977 when restoration work finally brought the castle back to its former glory. Vianden Castle was the inspiration for many Hollywood animation movies of the 1930s and so ENW is waiting boringly at the bottom of the chairlift that will takes us up to the top of the mountain. We just hope that the 32 min journey is not disturbed by wind, snow or monsters! Write the Correct Words! 1: 2: 3: 4: 5: 6: 1 How long is the journey to the top of the mountain? 2 What is the population of Vianden? 3 How much was the bus ticket? 4 Where did ENW walk around yesterday? 5 What kind of movies were inspired by the castle?

[5] Location 3 Part 3 Reading & Listening 3 ENW 322 Route du Vin Read the title for the 3rd part of this special Luxembourg podcast! Next read the three statements below. What do you think is the answer? If you are not sure - GUESS! Choose YES' or NO! A: Every year a wine marathon is run in Luxembourg. B: A half marathon is 21.1 miles. C: Remich is a commune in southern Luxembourg. Location 3 Jumbled Paragraphs Read / Listen to Location 3. What is the correct order for the sentences in each paragraph. Half Marathon on a Bike with Wine (a) Now ENW is not going to run the 21.1km as we are too unfit to do that, but we are going to cycle it! (b) The route follows some famous Luxembourg vineyards and is called the Route du Vin, or Wine Route in English. (c) Good morning on Day 3 of ENWs trip to Luxembourg and we have woken up bright and early as today we are doing something a little different. (d) Every year in late September a half-marathon road race is held around the commune of Remich in southern Luxembourg. (a) It is a small group of only 9 keen, perhaps slightly crazy, cycling enthusiasts who ENW has joined up with today. (b) Sensibly and legally, because we will be riding on the road, we will not be able to drink any of the lovely Luxembourg wine that we encounter at the five different vineyards on the tour. (c) Yes even though it is the beginning of January and the weather is just over 5C, we have booked ourself on a cycling tour that follows the 1/2 marathon s route. (a) Mmm just one question - what colour is our bike? (b) As everyone else on the tour is German, this means that for the next few hours ENW will not only have to remember to cycle on the wrong side of the road, but also speak only in German! (c) Right, we are wrapped up warm in our coldweather cycling gear, we have just taken a final toilet break and we are ready to go! P 1: P 2: P 3: 1 What is the temperature? 2 What is the name of the commune? 3 How many people are on the bike tour? 4 What side of the road will ENW have to cycle? 5 What can ENW not do today?

[6] Part 3 Reading & Listening 4 ENW 322 Location 4 Winterlights Read the title for the 4th part of this special Luxembourg podcast! Next read the three statements below. What do you think is the answer? If you are not sure - GUESS! Choose YES' or NO! A: Winterlights is an annual Christmas festival in Luxembourg. B: The specialty of Winterlights is pepper-spiced hot chocolate. C: Other cities that host Christmas festivals include Kiev & Paris. Location 4 Which Word? Read / Listen to Location 4 Read the 7 words in the box and then put them in the correct place. 1 soups 2 relaxing 3 capitals 4 chairlift 5 annual 6 coldest 7 wandered Centre-Ville Spectacular! It is our final night in Luxembourg as ENW will be taking the 08:19 train back to Brussels tomorrow morning for our flight to Japan in the afternoon. A recommendation from our hotel has led ENW to the very centre of Luxembourg and the traditional, 1: Christmas festival held in the city s main square just off the Rue Chimay. Like many European 2: like Berlin, Paris, Brussels, London and Madrid, the Luxembourg festival is full of colour, lights, music and food! ENW has 3: the 20 minutes or so from our hotel near the Luxembourg Station, but we have had to wrap up warm as the temperature is currently just 2C! However we hoped to be warmed up by the local food specialities such as meat 4:, pastries, hot spiced wine and of course chocolate! ENW is particularly on the look out for a cup of hot pepper-spiced chocolate which is supposed to warm you up even on the 5: of January evenings! As usual, ENW is sad to be leaving Luxembourg as it is one of the more unusual places we have been lucky to visit on our travels. The ride up to Vianden Castle on a 6: was breathtaking, the cycle tour around lakes and over the hills exhausting yet thrilling, and the sounds and smells of the Winterlights Festival is comforting and 7:. It is very cold though so lets find that hot chocolate! 1 What time is the train ENW will catch tomorrow? 2 What is the name of the road near the festival? 3 What is the temperature? 4 Which castle did ENW visit? 5 What does ENW want to drink?

[7] Part 4 Post Listening / Reading ENW 322 Writing Which One? Writing Which as your favourite Luxembourg location? Write as many reasons! Research the city and find TWO more locations you would like to visit. Write about your choices and explain why you chose them! And finally Did you Know..? (V) Other country s flags that are very similar to the Luxembourg one include Paraguay and Croatia, although both these flags include symbols on the middle white stripe. (W) The official colours of the Luxembourg flag are red, white and light blue and set out in a pattern of three horizontal stripes. (X) Although first flown in 1830 the flag wasn t actually adopted as the country s flag until 1972! (Y) The country s flag is incredibly similar to the national flag of the Netherlands, the only difference is that the blue is slightly lighter on the Luxembourg one. (Z) That the national symbols of Luxembourg appeared to be stolen, or borrowed from other nations?
