CONDITIONS OF INSTALLATION It is the law that all gas appliances are installed only by a competent (e.g. CORGI Registered) Installer, in accordance with the installation instructions and the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1994 with the rules in force. Failure to install appliances correctly could lead to prosecution. It is in your own interest and that of safety to comply with the law. The stove may be fitted below a combustible shelf providing that the shelf is at least 610mm above the top of the stove, the shelf must not extend in front of the stove. For a combustible side surface a minimum distance of 305mm is required, combustible rear surface 305mm and any rear surface 100mm. No additional purpose made additional ventilation is normally required for this appliance in G.B. If the chimney or flue has been previously used by appliances burning fuels other than gas, they must be swept prior to the installation of this stove. NB. For appliances installed in Republic of Ireland, refer to Domestic Gas Installation document for specific ventilation requirements. The Model number of this appliance is V 10;V10-3;V12;V12-3 and it is manufactured by: - The rating plate is located on the control panel on the underside of the appliance VERMONT CASTINGS INC. ABOUT YOUR NEW INTREPID GAS STOVE The Intrepid decorative coal effect gas stoves incorporate a unique and highly developed fuel bed, which gives the realism of a loose coal layout, combined with realistic flames and glow. The use of durable hard ceramic material in the construction of the fuelbed components ensures long and troubles free operation. When first using the new stove a slight smell may be noticed. This is due to starch used in the manufacture of the soft ceramic coals, it is non-toxic and will soon disappear. Please take the time to fully read these instructions, as you will then be able to obtain the most effective and safe operation of your stove. IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION WARNING This appliance gets to extremely high temperatures and as with all heating appliances a fireguard should be used for the protection of children, the elderly and infirm. Fireguards should conform to BS 6539 (1984) (Fireguards for use with solid fuel appliances). It is important that this appliance is serviced at least once a year by a CORGI registered gas installer. The chimney or flue should be visually checked for fallen debris or blockages which must be removed. The chimney should also be checked to ensure clearance of flue products. This is a condition of the guarantee. After installation or during servicing a spillage test must always be carried out. Rubbish of any type must NEVER be thrown onto the fuel bed, this could affect safe operation and damage the stove. Any debris or deposits should be removed from the fuel bed from time to time. This may be carried out by referring to the cleaning section as described later in this book. Only the correct number and type of coals must be used and only complete and genuine replacement sets must be used. Always keep furniture and combustible materials well clear of the stove and never dry clothing or items either on or near to the stove. Never use aerosols or flammable cleaning products near to the stove when it is in use. The hard ceramic fuel bed remains hot for a considerable period after use and sufficient time should be allowed for the stove to cool before cleaning etc. 3

WARNING a) THIS APPLIANCE MUST NEVER BE OPERATED WITH THE DOORS OPEN. b) IF THE GLASS IS CRACKED OR MISSING THE STOVE MUST NOT BE USED. c) THE STOVE IS DEEMED TO BE A WORKING SURFACE AND IS THEREFORE HOT AND SHOULD NOT BE TOUCHED, EXCEPT FOR THE CONTROL KNOB AND ADJACENT PANELS. OPERATING THE STOVE The control is located on the right lower side of the stove in between the front and back legs. The operation of the stove consists of a control valve with a built in piezo igniter. This is used to ignite the stove and control the amount of gas flow required. To light the stove proceed as follows: - 1) Depress the control knob and turn anti-clockwise to the position marked pilot. This will ignite the pilot, if it fails, continue to hold for a few seconds to purge the gas and repeat. 2) Continue to hold-in the control knob. (The pilot flame can be seen by looking at the lower left-hand side of the glass panel). Hold the control knob in for 5-10 seconds to allow the thermocouple to heat up and release, the pilot will now remain lit. In the unlikely event of a failure of the igniter, the stove can be lit as follows. Open the doors on the stove. Depress the control knob and turn anti-clockwise to the position marked pilot. Hold in the control knob for a few seconds to allow the gas to reach the pilot. Insert the tip of a lit taper into the hole on the burner heat shield located on the left-hand side of the burner. This will light the pilot flame. When the pilot has lit, continue to hold the control knob in for 5-10 seconds to allow the thermocouple to heat up, if the pilot goes out when the control knob is released, repeat the lighting sequence. 3) It is IMPORTANT that after lighting you must close the doors. Turn the control knob in the anti-clockwise direction to the high position and the main burner will light. 4) The gas control can be turned clockwise from the maximum position to give the desired heat output. WARNING If the stove goes out for any reason or is turned off and it is necessary to relight the stove, it is important to allow the stove to cool for 5-10 minutes before attempting to re-light it. FITTING THE REMOVEABLE HANDLE TO THE STOVE DOOR The door handle that comes with the stove is designed to be removable to prevent overheating during long periods of use. To use the handle, simply slide the collar into the door handle and open the doors. When you have either opened or shut the doors, remove the handle and store in a safe place. On Intrepid 3 models, the handle can be secured in position using the grub screw behind the handle boss, depending on your aesthetic preference. The Handle, if left attached will become extremely hot in use. Do not try to open the stove doors when the stove is in operation or without leaving sufficient time for the handle to cool after use. 4

SPILLAGE MONITORING SYSTEM This appliance is fitted with a spillage monitoring system, which shuts down the stove if the evacuation of combustion products from the stove is affected by a partially or fully blocked flue. If this system operates the stove will go out. If this occurs, leave the stove for ten minutes then follow the lighting procedure as described in the previous section. In the event of repeated operation a specialist must be called to investigate and rectify the cause. CLEANING WARNING Before attempting any cleaning operation ensure that the stove has been allowed to fully cool. Cleaning cast iron painted surfaces (Classic Black) Ensure the stove is cool, The cast iron painted stove usually remains clean and does not suffer from fingerprints, however occasionally you may need to use a slightly damp cloth to clean the cast iron surface, it is important that you do this whilst the stove is cool. If you need to touch-up an area on the stove proceed as follows. Allow the stove to cool. With a wire brush treat any areas needing attention (only cast iron). Ensure that the surface is clean and dry. Touch-up the area with Vermont Castings High Temperature Stove paint. Take care when using the paint as two coats will give better results than one thick coat. Cleaning porcelain enamel surfaces (Red enamel or Forest Green) Ensure the stove has been allowed to fully cool. It is important that water or any other liquids are not used to clean this appliance. Any fingerprints or marks can usually be buffed off with a soft cloth. If this fails allow the stove to fully cool and use a damp cloth. Allow to fully dry before re-lighting, as this will leave streaks on the enamel surface. Abrasive cleaners, chemical cleaning agents or any type of polish must never be used. This would expose the cast iron and may stain or begin to rust. Cleaning the fuelbed The coals and fuel bed should be periodically examined and any debris or deposits removed. A vacuum cleaner must not be used to do this as damage to the coals may result. To remove any deposits from the coals they should be removed from the stove and placed on a clean sheet of paper (it is advisable to keep the front coals in order and then each coal can be replaced in the same location). The coals should then be carefully brushed with a soft brush. With all coals removed, the fuel bed components and insulating mat may be carefully lifted out of the stove. The fuel bed components must also be cleaned by gently brushing with a soft brush. None of these parts must be washed or exposed to any cleaning agents or water. 5

Any damaged parts must be replaced by contacting your dealer or telephoning Vermont Castings on the number stated on the rear cover of this book. Coals must only be replaced with a complete and genuine replacement set and the stove must never be run with the wrong number or damaged coals. The fuelbed must be carefully reassembled as stated in the following section. Cleaning the glass Leave the stove to cool completely. Only warm water should be used to clean the glass. Never use harsh chemicals or abrasives to clean the glass. For any stubborn deposits contact your local dealer for a suitable cleaning agent. Cleaning the griddle on the top of the stove (only applicable to Intrepid 2 models). Leave the stove to cool completely. Due to the griddle been a natural finish, slight discoloration may occur due to the heat of the appliance. We recommend the use of wire wool to discard of any rust or deposits. To remove the griddle, open the doors and loosen the two screws inside the stove at each side of the griddle. Reassemble in reverse order. 6

SECTION 3 ASSEMBLING THE CERAMICS, AND FUEL BED a) Place the insulating mat centrally on to the fuelbed support then place the hard ceramic base on top of the insulating mat, and pull both fully forwards to the burner. Make sure that the ceramic base is located centrally. Ensure that both parts fit fully down onto the support and are not lodged on the burner. See below. 7

b) Place both the hard ceramic fuel bed sections on to the base so that the location lugs fit snugly into the recesses on the fuel bed sections. c) Place the Front Ceramic Rails centrally onto the Semi-Circular location plate situated at the front of the burner. Ensure that the front ceramic rails are located over the front edge. (See below) d) Select five of the large coals and locate each one centrally into the depressions in the Front Ceramic Rail. Ensure that the coals are equally spaced as shown below. 8

e) Select four of the large coals and two small coals, and place them on the front of the fuel bed directly behind the spaces between the front row of coals. f) Place a row of five coals to occupy the spaces behind the second row of coals. g) Place the remaining four large coals as shown below (Taking care not to allow the coals to be trapped behind the fuelbed):- 9

h) Place the remaining three small coals as shown below:- i) Finally, shut the doors on the stove. Once the doors have been shut, the handle should be facing downward or similar. The exact position and fit of the coals may be finely adjusted to give the most pleasing and random appearance. Warning: Use only the coals supplied with the stove. When replacing the coals remove the old coals and discard them. Fit a complete set of coals of the correct type. Do not fit additional coals or any coals other than a genuine replacement set. USER REPLACEABLE PARTS The only user replaceable parts on this stove are the fuelbed components and coals, which may be replaced as described in the above section. Replacement of any other parts must be carried out by a competent person such as a CORGI registered gas installer. The part numbers of the user replaceable parts are as follows, these are available from VERMONT CASTINGS,INC who may be contacted at the address shown on the rear cover. Fuelbed base 100-17920 Left Hand Fuelbed 100-17930 Right Hand Fuelbed 100-17940 Replacement Coal Set 100-17860 10
