Iowa CrossRoads CLC Director s Column During the week of April 10-16, 2016, six members of the Iowa CrossRoads Region of the CLC met in fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada to attend the 2016 Cadillac & LaSalle Club Grand National. Members in attendance were Jim & Karen Pittman, Ed & Betty Sorenson, Jim Caffrey (who drove his 1969 Cadillac Eldorado 3,825 miles through rain, snow and sleet all the way from Boone, Iowa and back again) and myself (Steve Fox) along with 400+ national and international club members. To begin, I arrived three days early to enjoy some tour time along the Las Vegas Strip. Walking from the Stratosphere five miles south to Mandalay Bay and back again, touring all the hotels and casinos in between, during a two-day stretch worked havoc on my aching feet and swollen ankles. Still, it was plenty of fun and I took a boat load of pictures (some of which are included in this newsletter)! On the third day (Tuesday), the Pittmans and I rode with Jim Caffrey in his 69 Eldo to the beautiful Valley of Fire State Park, located 60 northeast of Las Vegas. We were members of a CLC caravan that toured this magnificent 18-mile stretch of road through the Valley of Fire. The state park was full of wonderful rock-covered landscapes whose bright red, iron-rich rock formations gleamed in the sun. With a postcard pic around every turn, it was a natural sight that one will truly remember! The CLC Grand National officially kicked off on Wednesday, with the Welcome Reception and CLC Auction. The dinner was fantastic and the auction began with our auctioneer doing his best on-stage Elvis impersonation, which wasn t too bad for a man of 78 years! By the time the auction ended, I had made arrangements with Jim Caffrey to transport my winning bids home a blue, 50 s style pedal car, a desk-top model of a Checker taxi cab, a framed print of an elk landscape, and a few Grand National posters (all of which I didn t need, but couldn t resist).

Thanks for the ride through the Valley and helping me get this stuff home, Jim! On Thursday, several of us attended tours that were pre-arranged by the Las Vegas Region of the CLC. The Pittmans attended the tour highlighting the private car collections of Phil Maloof and Greg Heinrich, which they reported as being superb, while I attended the Mob Museum and Fremont Street Experience tours. The two-hour tour of the Mob Museum was great, as they illustrated how the mob played a crucial role in developing Las Vegas as the gambling mecca of the U.S. The lights and glamour of the Fremont Street Experience was cool, but be sure to leave the kiddies at home. Many of those on the street and on the zip line above were wearing hats, boots, and not much else (digital camera OFF)! On Friday, I attended a few car collections with the CLC including the Linq Car Collection (which housed some great automobiles from the 50 s and 60 s), the Art Goldstrom Collection (including some nice dragsters, nostalgic street rods, and an awesome autographed memorabilia collection including Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and Amelia Earhart how cool is that?), and the Hollywood Cars Museum (home to the Batmobile, Munster s Dragula, Flintstone cars, and Liberace s collection of glitzy cars, pianos, and wardrobe). Unfortunately, Jim Caffrey had to miss the Thursday and Friday tours as he battled to fix an ignition problem in his 69 Eldo. Luckily, he was able to get it repaired before his Sunday journey home. On Saturday, while Karen enjoyed the Ladies Shopping Tour at the Venetian, the rest of us enjoyed the spectacular Grand National Show Field featuring 99 of the most beautifully-restored Cadillacs and LaSalles in the United States. The first year of Cadillac (1903) provided a star entry, with a Las Vegas dealership bringing some 2016 models (for sale, of course), and every Cadillac-LaSalle era in-between being well represented. The 2016 CLC Grand National came to a close with the Saturday evening CLC Awards Banquet, where our very own Jim Caffrey came home with a 3 rd Place Award for his 1969 Cadillac Eldorado (complete with a new ignition assembly). Kudos from all of us, Jim, on this well-deserved award (see pics ahead)! By Sunday, after spending seven days living in the Las Vegas pinball machine, I think all of us were ready and willing to head back to sane civilization in the corn-fed comfort of the great state of Iowa. Until next time, may your sails be taut and may the wind always remain at your back. Enjoy the pics!

Iowa Crossroads CLC Events Calendar for 2016 Members of the Iowa Crossroads CLC can look forward to a lucky 13 scheduled touring events in 2016 to place upon your home calendars! Please note that all events listed below are subject to change. Look for upcoming event flyers throughout the year that detail finalized plans for each event, but please place these fine events on your calendar straight away! January: Traditionally, the Iowa CrossRoads CLC has not held a January event so as to better enjoy our winter solace in the comfort of our own home. I saw no need to break with that restful tradition in 2016! February: This year, our traditional Valentine s Day Luncheon to honor the ladies of our club was held at the Tulip Tea Room in Pella, Iowa on Saturday, February 13, 2016. Twelve club members gathered at this fine historic, mission-style tea room at 1 p.m. Excluding travel time, this was a 1-2 hour social event. March: On Saturday, March 12, 11 club members met in Clarion, Iowa to tour one of the finest tractor collections in the U. S. at the Heartland Museum following a hearty lunch at the rustic Fuel Restaurant. This event was recommended by fellow club member, Nora Schlenker. April: The touring event for April was one that was shared on a national level as six Iowa CrossRoads club members traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada to participate in the 2016 Cadillac & LaSalle Club Grand National from April 10-16, 2016. The host hotel for this event was the Suncoast Hotel & Casino. The event was amazing, as tours to the Mob Museum, Fremont Street Experience, the Las Vegas Strip, the Valley of Fire State Park, and a variety of classic car collections and associated memorabilia were pre-arranged by our host, the Las Vegas Region of the CLC. Not to mention the spectacular show field of 99 Cadillacs and LaSalles! May: A joint gathering of the Iowa CrossRoads CLC and the Iowa Hawkeye Chapters of the Buick Club of America and Studebaker Club of America will meet at the farmstead of Gene & Betty Upstill in Gilbert, Iowa at noon on Sunday, May 15, 2016 (potluck lunch at 12:30 p.m.) Excluding travel time, this will be a 2-3 hour social event. This event came as a special invitation by new club member and fellow car enthusiast, Mr. Gene Upstill.

Mid-June: Club members will enjoy this surf and turf touring event to be held in Clear Lake, Iowa on Saturday, June 11, 2016. Interested members will meet early in the day to cruise up to Clear Lake to tour the Surf Ballroom & Museum ($5 suggested donation) in the morning, followed by lunch and a 90-minute, leisurely-afternoon cruise around Clear Lake aboard the popular Lady of the Lake riverboat. The cost of the cruise is $14. This will be an all-day touring event. This event was proposed by fellow club members, Lyle and Lori Dahl. Late-June: Our traditional annual classic-car show n shine will be held at the Olmsted-Urban House Ice Cream Social & Open House located at 4010 70 th Street in Urbandale, Iowa, beginning at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 26, 2016. Come and show off your magnificent automobile at the very tranquil atmosphere of this 1920 s style homemade pie and ice cream social, with an old-fashioned Dixieland band to boot! Excluding travel time, this will be a 2-3 hour social event. July: On Saturday, July 16, 2016, club members will be heading east to Bettendorf, Iowa to tour the show field of the national Pontiac-Oakland Club Convention, which happens to be in eastern Iowa this year. Interested club members travelling from central Iowa will meet early for the trip east. Once in the Bettendorf area, we will stop for lunch followed by a tour of the convention s massive show field, which is free of charge according to the national Pontiac- Oakland Club. This will be an all-day touring event, so stay as long as you like! This event was proposed by fellow club members, Dean and Vickie Stoltenberg. August: On Saturday, August 27, 2016, club members will be heading west for a weekend trip to Nebraska City, Nebraska (just over the state line in SW Iowa). Overnight accommodations will be provided by Lied Lodge & Conference Center at the special rate of $119 per night plus tax. Lodge reservations will be made independently, with a free-cancellation policy until 24- hours before our scheduled arrival. To reserve your room, call Robin, Lied Lodge Reservation Manager, at (402) 873-8728. When making your reservation, be sure to mention that you are with Steve Fox and the Iowa CrossRoads CLC to secure the special rate. Weekend touring events to choose from will include the Arbor Day Farm & Mansion, the Missouri River Basin Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, Kimmel Orchard & Vineyard, the Kregel Windmill Museum, and the Nebraska City Museum of Firefighting, not to mention touring all the great antique shops and a visit to a rather extraordinary cemetery (proposed by club member, Russ Bees). This will be an overnight weekend event, returning on Sunday, August 28, 2016. This weekend event was proposed by regional club director, Steve Fox. Mid-September: Many club members enjoy participating in the fabulous Des Moines Concours d Elegance, an annual celebration promoting the art and design of the automobile. This year s event will be held on the weekend of September 10-11, 2016. Exhibitors are invited to attend a driving event and exhibitor banquet in the Des Moines area on Saturday, September 10 th, and will be displaying their fine automobiles at the Pappajohn Sculpture Park

in downtown Des Moines the following day on Sunday, September 11 th. Iowa CrossRoads club members Steve Fox, Jim Caffrey, and Brian Sipma will be heading up the Collectibles Class (1955-1966) for this year s event, so don t miss out! For more information on how to participate in this fine automotive event that is quickly becoming an Iowa tradition, see the Concours web site at: http://www.desmoinesconcours.com. This is a weekend touring event for exhibitors and a 2-3 hour event for patrons. Late-September: The Cadillac & LaSalle Club Museum s Fall Festival will occur at the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, Michigan on the weekend of September 23-25, 2016. This is an annual weekend touring event hosted by the West Michigan Region of the Cadillac & LaSalle Club. For more informational updates on this fine event, refer to the CLCMRC web page at: http://www.cadillaclasallemuseum.org. We hope to make this a recurring biennial event for the Iowa CrossRoads regional membership. October: On Saturday, October 15, 2016, club members will enjoy our traditional autumn touring event to take in the fall colors and a bit of homespun Americana in Amana, Iowa once again this year. A home-cooked meal will be served up at one of the popular German-fare restaurants in Amana, as we enjoy the company of other club members. A tour of historic Amana s antique malls, woolen mills, candy shops, beer gardens, and wine cellars will occur after lunch on this fine, colorful October afternoon. This is a traditional, biennial, 4-5 hour touring event for our club that you are sure to enjoy! November: A nice lunch followed by a tour of the National Czech & Slovak Museum and Library in Cedar Rapids, Iowa is on tap for Saturday, November 12, 2016. The location of the luncheon beforehand has yet to be determined. Admission to the museum and library is $10. Excluding travel time, this will be a 3-4 hour combined event. This event was proposed by fellow club members, Dave and Karen Kroeger. December: Save your appetite and exercise your holiday spirit by attending our annual Christmas celebration at noon on Saturday, December 10, 2016. This year, our annual Christmas/Holiday gathering will start with a festive luncheon and optional grab-bag gift exchange at Johnny s Italian Steakhouse at their new location (550 Bass Pro Drive) in Altoona, Iowa. Following this enjoyable holiday gathering, interested club members can begin to complete that Christmas shopping list by enjoying the ultimate Western-style shopping experience at nearby Bass Pro Shops, directly across the street from the restaurant. Excluding travel time, this will be a 2-3 hour combined holiday event. Note: Any questions and/or concerns regarding these scheduled events should be directed to our Activities Chairman, Steve Fox, at your convenience. He can be reached by phone at (515) 491-2624 or by e-mail at foxenterprises@yahoo.com. Please forward any complaints to comrade Vladimir Vladivostok, last seen trying to escape from a gulag somewhere outside Yakutsk, Siberia!

PLEASE JOIN US FOR A JOINT GATHERING OF THE IOWA CROSSROADS CLC, AND THE HAWKEYE CHAPTERS OF THE BUICK & STUDEBAKER CLUBS! One of our newest club members and fellow car enthusiast, Gene Upstill and his wife Betty, have once again graciously invited members of the Iowa CrossRoads CLC to join the Hawkeye Chapter of the Buick Club of America and the Studebaker Driver s Club for a joint gathering at their beautiful farmstead, located at 16101 530 th Avenue in Gilbert, Iowa on Sunday, May 15. This will be a potluck gathering, with Gene and Betty graciously providing smoked meats from Hickory Park. Attending families are asked to bring a side dish and/or a dessert to share with the group. Please bring your own table service and whatever you wish to drink. Lunch will begin at 12:30 p.m., but the Upstills are encouraging guests to arrive by noon. Interested club members will meet at Earl May Garden Center, located at 1509 N. Ankeny Boulevard in Ankeny at 10:45 a.m. for the drive up to Gilbert. Weather permitting, let s make it a point to drive our classic cars so that we can provide Gene, Betty and their guests with a show field to remember! You will be equally amazed at the car collection Gene and Betty have amassed over the years. This is an annual event that has been well received and enjoyed by all those who attend! On behalf of the Iowa CrossRoads Region of the CLC, I extend our heartfelt thanks to Gene and Betty for their kind invitation!

The gang at the Valley of Fire State Park and DuPar s Restaurant at the Suncoast! URGENT: Renewal of your National Cadillac & LaSalle Club Dues I have been contacted by Jason Edge of the National CLC that 3 of our members still have not renewed their national dues for 2016. Please remember that all regional members must also belong to the National CLC as well. In my humble opinion, the 11 editions of The Self-Starter magazine that we receive each year are worth far more than the annual $40 investment we are asked to make. Your copy of The Self-Starter indicates the expiration date of your national Cadillac & LaSalle Club dues. On the outside wrapper, just above your name and address, is the date of your dues expiration. If your dues have expired, please pay them at your earliest convenience to avoid any lapse in your club membership. Thank you!

For all new members, please fill out the form below and mail it to: Karen Pittman Membership Chair, Iowa CrossRoads C.L.C., 4408 74 th Street, Urbandale, Iowa 50322. Note: If your dues are not received by February 15th of the calendar year, you will no longer receive the newsletter and your regional membership will be dropped. Also, please take note as to when your national dues are due and pay them at the appropriate time, as this will vary for each member.
