The Badeco Beach Hotel Info guide 2006 Bagamoyo/Tanzania Tanzania Formerly known as German East Africa during colonial times, Tanzania today is still a tourist destination yet to be discovered. And what a colourful world there is to gain: spectacular sunsets at Mount Kilimandjaro, safaris through awesome national parks and game reserves or an adventurous ride across wild rivers as well as a guaranteed hearty welcome by the most charming of friendly people. What makes Tanzania a top travel destination is the grand beauty of its rich nature and wild life, historical excavations from the earliest period of mankind as well as mythical places like Zanzibar, Arusha, Dar Es Salaam and, last but not least, Bagamoyo. Bagamoyo Bagamoyo is a coastal township some 65 kilometres north of Dar Es Salaam, straight across the sea opposite the island of Zanzibar. It offers one of the finest beaches in the entire country. Although Bagamoyo is a small village, you will again and again read the name in historical files: From here, Richard Burton and John Speke started in 1857 their expedition to Lake Tanganjika. Here, the journalist Henry Morton Stanley made the move for his quest through the African continent and started his search for the then missing Dr. David Livingstone in Bagamoyo. Would you believe it? From 1887 to 1891 this small settlement was the capital of German East Africa. Old colonial public buildings such as the customs office, the prison and the governor s palace are still well preserved. For many years Bagamoyo was a centre for trading both slaves and ivory. You can still see the stone crams where slaves were kept as well as the ramps where they were forced to embark the traditional sailing boats (dhows), just like cattle on the way to the abattoir. Early in history Bagamoyo has been a centre of missionary work. Even today the spiritan sect has a branch in this village. They are still being supported by their brethren in Knechtsteden near Cologne in Germany. The mission maintains a museum with documents and various objects from the colonial past. Behind the missionary church you will find remnants of the old cemetery. And you can still see the little chapel, where Livingstone s preserved body lay in state, before it was finally brought to England for a state funeral. Nevertheless it s not only the past that attracts visitors to Bagamoyo. Today you will encounter one of the best schools for music, dance and art in Eastern Africa. And there is always a warm welcome. If that s what you re looking for, feel free and participate in the courses offered at this charming place. And we guarantee that this will turn out as an unforgettable rewarding experience! Translation: Stephan Hamacher (www.weitewelt.info) - 1 -

Good to know... Time difference From the end of March to the end of October Tanzanian Time is one hour ahead of European Central Time, from the end of October to the end of March, the time difference is two hours. Climate There is a rainy season in April and May and another short one in November. However, even then rain does not pour down all day long, and days are still very warm. Climatic evolution has nevertheless caused some change in the weather. Temperatures vary a lot between the mountainous areas and the tropical coast line. On the shores of the Indian Ocean you will enjoy comfortable 30 Celsius, while the waters await you with a smoothing soothing 25... Language matters... That s definitely Suaheli, the official tongue of Tanzania. You can try your luck in English though, but you might discover that you won t be understood everywhere... Anyway, a smile will always keep you on the right track. Let s talk about... money 100 Cents make a Tanzanian Shilling (TSH). Sorry, but money can be exchanged only within the country. If you pay by cheque, be prepared to pay a fee of five US-$. 1 US-$ is equivalent to 1200 TSH, 1 Euro is approximately 1550 TSH (spring 2006). Vaccination Yellow-fever-vaccination is a must only when you travel to Tanzania from other African countries. Precaution against Malaria is recommended. Your doctor will gladly give you further advice. Airport tax...... is 50 US-$, but generally included in your airplane ticket. Travel documents You need a passport which is still valid for at least six months prior to your departure from Tanzania. Besides you need to obtain a visa to your own expense (2006: 50 $/ ) from the Tanzanian embassy in Berlin, the general consulate in Bönningstedt near Hamburg or from the airport at Dar Es Salaam. - 6 -

Energy and water supply Electricity: standard is 220 V. Shortage of electricity, water and energy supply may occur, accordingly fans and air-condition can collapse once in a while, which is part of the adventure. You are well advised to save water in Eastern Africa. Dress code Feel free to wear light summer clothes. Don t forget to bring along a hat or a cap, and have the sunglasses ready. If you re out for a safari, make sure to bring along waterproof clothes, convenient hiking shoes as well as sweaters for cold nights. There is no particular dress code in hotels, however, be aware to meet the predominantly Islamic community in this country with respect. Appearing in bathing clothes while dining at the hotel or nude swimming are definitely do-nots and no-goes! Entertainment There are few discotheques outside the hotel, which is why the management lovingly cares for dancing parties under a head full of stars. In your purse...... local beer is almost a give-away (about 1 $), imported beer will cost you 1,5 $, soft drinks are between 0,5 and 1 $, snacks at 2 $. A proper meal will cost between 3 and 12 $. A pack of cigarettes will take 1,5 $. Tipping...... is an important issue in Tanzania, simply, because it is a welcome contribution on the way to struggle successfully through life. The porter gets 500 TSH, in a restaurant you are expected to leave an extra ten percent. Souvenirs Of course, the usual craftwork and wood carvings. Hard dark wood is the popular material for Makonde carvings. But Europeans also love coffee and tea from the Tanzanian highlands. Watch out: the common ivory and tortoiseshells are protected and cannot be exported. Airline We have made excellent experience with KLM, Swiss/Cross and British Airways. Nowadays, Emirates offers a fabulous alternative via Dubai airport. - 7 -
