Camp description Outline The Year 10 camp, Tuilkilkey, will attempt to take a similar format as that of the well-known television program The Amazing Race and have elements of other programs such as Survivor. The theme is dealing with the Victorian Gold Rush, bushrangers and other Australian elements. Students are familiar with the concepts of the above programs and the intention is to introduce something which students can relate to and therefore enthuse and motivate them to participate fully in the program. It will also instigate competition between the groups on each camp and between Tutor Groups as there is a prize for the team with the most points at the end of the camps and a trophy for the Tutor Group with the most points over all the camps. The duration of the camp is 4 days. Tuilkilkey is a working sheep station of 50,000 acres situated in the mid north of South Australia. The landscape varies from flat flood plain to rolling hills and large tracts of open bushland. It is inhabited mainly by sheep, kangaroos and goats. Tuilkilkey is a perfect setting to allow students to experience the real Australia and participate in a unique camp. The Tuilkilkey program was trialled in 2007 by a group of 25 students and the full Year 10 cohort have participated ever since. The Tuilkilkey program builds on the learning of the Year 9 Quest program and encourages students to work together while solving a series of mentally and physically challenging tasks which are linked to the school s curriculum. Challenges that students will participate in are aligned, where possible, with subject areas at the college. Elements of the students training is also done as part of subject areas e.g. Topographic Map Skills, GPS and UHF radio use Humanities (10 lessons). Pythagoras s Theorem, volumes Mathematics. Poetry, readings and songs English (10 lessons). Year 10 students will also be participating in two days of preparation at the College, one of which was a recognized Essential First Aid course run by St John s at the end of Year 9. Woodcroft College Outdoor Education - Year 10 Tuilkilkey 1

Purpose of this document This is an abridged Student Manual designed as a reference for parents. Students receive a comprehensive student manual, containing information and guidelines for Year 10 students to participate fully in the Year 10 Tuilkilkey Camp. The document is meant as a guide for students before and during their participation in the camp. Students should become familiar with the contents of the manual before the program. They will be given instructions in the use of the manual and its contents. The Manual is a resource that is used in lessons and MUST be taken and used on camp. Camp Dates: Camp One: 10RR Sun 14 May to Wed 17 May Camp Two: 10AH Wed 17 May to Sat 20 May Camp Three: 10EO Sun 21 May to Wed 24 May Camp Four: 10LF Wed 24 May to Sat 27 May Camp Five: 10MCH Sun 28 May to Wed 31 May Camp Six: 10GO / NVB Wed 31 May to Sat 3 June Camp times: Arrive at College before: Depart College at: Return time to the College: 6.30 am 7.00 am Between 4.30 5.00 pm Location: Tuilkilkey Station, Mid North, South Australia. During the camp each group of students will be using expensive electronic equipment such as a GPS and a UHF radio. Student groups are therefore responsible for those items. If these items are damaged or rendered inoperable through misuse or willful damage, students/groups will be required to reimburse the College. This also applies to any other equipment used on camp. Woodcroft College Outdoor Education - Year 10 Tuilkilkey 2

Staffing Each camp will have approximately 5 6 staff and 2 safety vehicles. Woodcroft Staff - Outdoor Ed., 4WD, heavy vehicle experienced, teachers Outdoor Education Instructors - each will hold various instructional qualifications. Other Persons - one or all of the following qualifications: outdoor, 4WD, heavy vehicle, emergency rescue experience All staff are First Aid trained. Two staff members will be in charge of the safety vehicles and be in the vicinity of groups as well as participating in some of the activities. A staff member will be a Shadow (person following each group from a distance). To enable the students to become fully involved in the activity and the challenges of the camp, they will be travelling around the property in a group of approximately 8, without direct staff supervision. This allows students to use their skills and initiative without turning to an adult for reassurance and confirmation of correct decision making. The Shadow will be in constant UHF access to the group and regular visual surveillance to ensure safety without intrusion. Night camps are with staff in attendance. The safety vehicles are equipped with UHF radios as are each group and the Shadows. Each of the safety vehicles are also equipped with a Satellite phone. The police, emergency services, hospital and ambulance services at Peterborough will be made aware of our presence and activities on the station. Woodcroft College Outdoor Education - Year 10 Tuilkilkey 3

Philosophy and Goals The primary goal of the Year 9 Quest Camp and the Year 10 Tuilkilkey Camp is to develop the following three qualities in our students: Perseverance: trying very hard, not giving up too soon and becoming more resilient. Selflessness: regularly acting for the benefit of others rather than self. Community Spirit: feeling a responsibility for the welfare of society. Perseverance Selflessness Community Spirit We feel that the relationship between these qualities needs to be clearly defined. During the program students will need both perseverance and selflessness. All activities and camp life will demand certain amounts of each. Through perseverance and selfless action, a strong community spirit will develop within a group and a Tutor Group. Students will experience success via interdependence rather than individual action. This experience will serve to develop a variety of social skills and affirm the value of such skills in achieving success in life. The program is to be viewed as a continuation of the purposeful journey that began on Quest in Year 9. The program s method of achieving this goal rests on the principle of experiential learning, which has been known for many years: Tell me, and I will forget. Show me and I may remember. Involve me and I will understand. Confucius 450 BC. The experiences students are exposed to are effective vehicles to teach valuable lessons about life. Put quite simply, if we are never given the opportunity to take a risk it is difficult to learn how to make reasoned decisions about actions, which have consequences. Or if we never really have to work towards a common goal where perseverance, selflessness and community spirit are essential, how are we to learn how to work as part of a team? Many life lessons are learned by the process of trial and error in the real world. The experiential learning program at Year 10 is designed to allow students to gain powerful insights and personal skills, which will strengthen and prepare them for the less controlled experiential learning environment of life. The 4 days of physical and mental challenges presented to students will expose students to the situations for the required learning to take place. To ensure an integrated learning experience, the camp will be supported at school by lessons. The lessons will explain the philosophy behind the program and focus on First Aid training (Year 9), personal hygiene, equipment, food, rubbish, toileting etc. Supporting units will be taught by other faculties helping students learn camp related knowledge and skills e.g. geography navigation/map reading. Tuilkilkey will also: Be a fun and memorable experience. Develop team work and cooperation. Focus on building the self-esteem and confidence of our students. Develop leadership skills. Promote environmentally sustainable living. Allow all students to experience success at their own pace and ability level whilst being involved in achievable mental and physical challenges. Strive to ensure all students mental and physical safety. Cater for the needs of both genders and those with special needs. Incorporate an integrated curriculum approach. Woodcroft College Outdoor Education - Year 10 Tuilkilkey 4

Student information The information below is for reference only. Please ensure that the student purchases and packages their food and packs their own clothing and equipment. Students are well versed in the requirements of camp and taking personal responsibility for their preparations is an important step towards becoming more independent. Tuilkilkey Food Notes As part of the requirement for the Tuilkilkey camp, students must shop for their camp food. Parents are asked to refrain from doing the food shopping and allow their child to go through the purchasing process outlined to them at the preparation session at the college. The Tuilkilkey program involves students moving on foot through Mid North range country on Tuilkilkey station. Students have a series of challenges to complete each day. We have developed a very prescriptive system of meals which will allow students to only carry one day s food in their packs at any time. This will reduce the weight of their packs and allow them to move more freely. The gear list must also be adhered to very strictly as this is also designed to reduce weight. Only the items listed should be carried. Meals Required Each student attending Tuilkilkey must bring with them: 1 x packed lunch for bus trip up. 3 x Breakfast 2 x Lunch 3 x Dinner 4 x Snacks Each meal needs to be in a snap lock bag labelled Dinner Day 1 etc. This will create 12 snap lock bags each with a meal in it. All these bags need to be placed in a larger plastic bag clearly labelled with the student s name. Money for lunch stop on journey home ($15 is adequate) Meal Options On page 6 is a table which describes the various meal options available. We have tried to find a balance between the need to control what foods students bring and allowing a degree of choice. The table is divided into 5 options for a day s food so there are 5 alternative lists of ingredients for 5 different dinner options etc. Students can choose any mixture of options to make up their 12 snap locks as long as it results in: 3 x Breakfast, 2 x Lunch, 3 x Dinner, 4 x Snacks. It is quite acceptable to stick with the same menu for each day s food. It is very important that students only bring the products listed in the tin / packet weights quoted. Obviously, if some products are unavailable, an alternative will have to be bought. Bear in mind that each meal needs to fit into an 18cm x 17cm snap lock bag. Students should remember that some products will need to be taken out of their packaging and divided up e.g. Vita Wheats in lunches, Porridge Sachets in breakfasts, Hot Choc sachets across breakfasts and lunches. When individual portions are bought in a larger box you will only ever need one larger box e.g. only buy one 250g box of Vita Wheat. On page 7 there is a product list including the full name of all the products in the meal options. Alternative brands of a similar product are quite acceptable. A suggested method to get your food together would be: 1. First go to the meal options table on page two select which meals you would like and write the number of each in the appropriate box e.g. 3 x option 1 breakfast, 2 x option 3 lunch, 1 x each of the first 3 dinner options and 2 x option 1 lunch and 2 x option 3 lunch. 2. Next go to the product list on page 3 work through each of your meal choices and write in the number of each product you require. Remember, when a product comes in a multi-pack only get one and split it across the meals. 3. You have now created your shopping list and you can add up the prices and see how much it will cost.
