Sivec Marble - Description SIVEC WHITE is the commercial name for a fine-grained white dolomitic marble, which is quarried in the area of Prilep, F.YR.O.M. Sivec is a famous material that is known from the ancient years, it is estimated that 1.200.000 m3 have been excavated over 6th centuries. 1

Sivec Marble History Sivec has built the region of south-east Europe from 3rd century B.C. on till 5th century A.D. Historian Aurilius Remnateus states in 149 B.C., in his trietise Itinerarium Burdigalense the enormous mining activity in the region, after it became a roman province Whiteness and big quantities of SIVEC marble amazed Roman citizens Hugh amounts were earned very fast with unique projects ordered by wealthy aristocrats, senate members, famous sculptors and wealthy aristocrats (theaters, arenas, palaces etc.) The two biggest projects built almost exclusively by Sivec White are "HERAKLEA" and "STOBI". 5

After 15th century, the area, being a part of the great Ottoman Empire, and in generally a place of constant territorial conflicts, had no chance to develop memorable building activity. The first five decades of 20th century were even worse, bloodstained wars all over Balkans followed by the two world wars, leaving no space for further construction 12

Sivec Marble Quarries Hard Facts The excavating area of 25.000.000 m2 is a strong foundation on which plans for huge projects can become reality. Total quarry concession is 1.92 square kilometer. The biggest quarry in the world. Only 1/3 of the total quarry is used for excavation Reserves estimated for 127 years with a yearly production of 75.000 tons.
