Who we are Aeronautical MET Services in Germany - at a glance The German Meteorological Service (DWD) is the National Meteorological Service of Germany. DWD is the certificated and designated provider of Aeronautical MET Services for Civil Aviation in Germany. DWD is a federal authority under the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure. The Department of Aeronautical Meteorology of DWD acts as Aviation MET Authority by order of the MoT. 3
What we do Services for aviation Meteorological Services for IFR-Traffic, for GA, Search and Rescue Special Meteorological Services for Air Traffic Services, Airports etc. Selfbriefing Services for Civil Aviation, Aviation Service, Flight Plan Providers Research in the field of Aeronautical meteorology Developments of new services and products Assistance in the development of international standards and practices 4

MET we provide for ATM & Airport (example) ATM & CDM information & communication of MWO Frankfurt Telephone conferences with key customers DFS, Fraport, Lufthansa daily at 03:45 and 16:00 loc International conference call with Vienna and Zurich daily 09:30 loc Sigmet coordination as needed with Toulouse and Brussels Creation of addressee-oriented specialty products Airport Meteorological briefing and pc_met any time personal telephone consultation Monthly Operations Management Round 7 7
What we provide for Pilots Advanced briefingssystems and products: user specific for pilots, airlines, air traffic control and airport operators, international applicable and (more more) inter operable 8
Safety is still a concern 9
e.g. Turbulence Briefing-portal Clearflight for Eurocontrol of UKMO, Météo France, FMI, DWD DWD s EDP forecasts had the highest skill (AUC) score 14.2.2013,06 UTC 10

What challenges are Causes of delays - Depatures 12
What challenges are precise weather forecast = increase capacity Statistics Eurocontrol 2010 13
Taking Services forward According to European ATM Master Plan / ICAO GANP key goals focus on increasing safety, capacity, more cost effective ANSP and lowering of environmental impact of aviation. Modernization process includes evolution of MET service provision in a number of focus areas: better integration of MET information in ATM decision making and better management of weather events impacting ATM performance recognized role of MET expert in collaborative decision making CDM in support of the adverse weather management improvement of weather forecast accuracy, in particular regarding the timing of ATM and airport performance impacting events availability of real-time MET information in ATM with much higher update cycle, requiring more automation of observations and decision making processes evolution to net-centric and data-centric information exchange building upon open standards (WXXM) 14
Control the weather? Weather can control us! 15
CDM. only works if MET is involved 16
Accounting weather is difficult. 17
