Monday We depart at 9am and descend the town lock onto the river Yonne and then onto the Nivernais Canal,the morning cruise takes us past the limestone cliffs of Basville and a15c fortified farm. After stopping for lunch we continue to our destination of the day, Lucy-sur-Yonne (pop 151) with 11c church. The nearby river and mill pond is ideal for swimming on hot days. Take the after adventure rock climbing and zip lining through the caves of Avallon. perfect for budding Tomb Raiders. Evening Dining : Sunday Just ten minutes from Vézelay, and close to two picturesque old bridges across the river Cure lies Les Deux Ponts restaurant. A lovely farmhouse style restaurant, with a cozy log fire, where Philippe and Marianne Bariteau, prepare delightful cuisine from fresh local produce. Your chauffeured private car meets you at your Paris hotel, airport arrivals, or station. Usual pick up time of 2pm. Arrive to Clamecy, (pop 4,500) an old town nestled in rolling landscape of the Nievre region from where the Canal du Nivernais gets its name. Welcome aboard with Champagne and homemade gougére pastries. Take a walk into Clamecy with winding cobbled streets and magnificent 16c church St Martin. Tuesday 9am and we set off along the meandering canal past pretty villages and the magnificent white cliffs of Rochers-du-Saussois. After lunch we arrive at the foot of the hilltop village of Mailly-le-Chateau (pop 567) with 14c Chateau perched in the very edge of a tall escapement, and fortified 13c church. Today we get wet as we kayak along the river Cure, look out for kingfishers, herons, and wild deer, Thursday Evening dining in the village of Mailly-le-chateau where Elisabeth and Dominique offer classic Burgundy cuisine at Le Castel Hotel (Full board option) Evening dining aboard the Randle; our chef prepares a delicious three course dinner complemented with selected premier cru wine. Wednesday After breakfast aboard the Randle we make our way along meandering canal and river Yonne to the pretty canal side Village of Accolay (pop 467) Take a guided horseback trek along the trails, green pastures, and wooded hills of the Burgundy countryside. Evening dining at the Hostellerie-de-la-fontaine,a surprisingly good restaurant in a quiet village with elegant under-croft restaurant or al fresco on balmy evenings. 9am departure for our morning cruise along thecanal with vineyards coming into view on the hills above. Take an afternoon guided cycle tour through the pretty hilltop vineyards and villages of Irancy, Bailly, and Chitry, and sample the local Burgundy wines. And take an evening row along the river in the ship's boat. Evening dining just cross the river at the Aubergede-les-tilleuls where chef Alain prepares gastronomic dishes from fresh local ingredients. Friday 9am The Randle departs, today we are cruising on the River Yonne, with open views as we cruise past the pretty riverside villages of Bailly and Vaux. After lunch arrive to our destination, Auxerre (pop 45,000). Auxerre has been a prosperous town since roman times and is dominated by the 11-16c St Étienne cathedral built on the high ground overlooking the river. Although a bustling and modern town it maintains its 15c charm with many timber framed houses and pretty streets, a great place for shopping or just people watching from one of the busy street side cafés.
