Silver Jubilee of the Central Metallurgical Research and Development Institute (CMRDI) of Egypt 1983 2008 MINERALS TO MATERIALS CONFERENCE - M2M 08 Bridging the Gap between Minerals and Materials 15-18 December 2008, Cairo, Egypt www.cmrdi.sci.eg/m2m.htm Organized by Central Metallurgical Research and Development Institute (CMRDI) FIRST CIRCULAR AND CALL FOR PAPERS OCCASION The Central Metallurgical Research and Development Institute (CMRDI), Cairo, Egypt is a distinguished research and development organization established on 1983 by the assistance of UNIDO. During the past 25 years, CMRDI has made vital contributions to the development of mineral, metal and materials technologies not only in Egypt but also in Africa and the Middle East. During year 2008, the institute is celebrating its silver Jubilee by organizing various events, on the peak of which is the conference on Minerals to Materials. BACKGROUND Minerals are essential raw materials for the economic growth of any country. They provide support to the down-stream industries and the entire industrial development of the nation. Maximization of the use of mineral commodities would result in an increase of the added value as new products could be obtained from the minerals and its processing intermediates. During the last two decades, new technologies have been developed in the areas of mineral beneficiation and processing which allow utilization of minerals in advanced applications. However, the intermediates require further purification to produce initial materials for production of advanced materials for advanced industrial applications. Scientific collaboration among scientists from a variety of disciplines can help in better understanding of the mineral resources utilization. This conference will provide a good chance for participants to discuss and present the recent advances in processing technologies of minerals to produce advanced materials and their subsequent manufacturing for production of ready-to-use products. The conference will be also an excellent format for interaction and networking among participants for future collaboration. Minerals Beneficiation Concentrates Processing Intermediates Advanced Materials Manufacturing Advanced Processing Purification Ready to Use 1
OBJECTIVES Discussing technologies for maximum utilization of mineral commodities through enhanced beneficiation and advanced processing techniques. Purification of the produced concentrates and intermediates. Processing the intermediates for advanced materials production. Manufacturing of the advanced materials to produce ready-to-use products. TOPICS The conference will deal with the following topics: Mineral beneficiation using different unit operations such as crushing, grinding, classification, gravity separation, magnetic separation, flotation, heavy media separation, bio-beneficiation to produce concentrates and intermediates which are further processed to advanced materials. Chemical processing of the minerals and intermediates through pyro- hydro- and electro-metallurgical routes and bio-processing and subsequent purification. Advanced processing of the intermediates to produce advanced materials. This includes advanced techniques such as sol-gel, chemical and physical vapor deposition (CVD, PVD), plasma sputtering,... etc. Manufacturing of materials for advanced applications in electronic, magnetic, sensor, advanced coating industries,... etc. CALL FOR PAPERS Authors are invited to submit abstracts (about 200 words) on the above topics, by August 1 st 2008 to conference Secretary General. PROCEEDINGS The full texts of the accepted papers will be published in a CD Conference Proceeding and distributed to the delegates during the conference. IMPORTANT DATES Submission of abstract 1 st August 2008 Notification of acceptance 1 st September 2008 Submission of full paper 1 st November 2008 Conference 15-18 December 2008 LANGUAGE The official language of the conference is English which will be used for presentations and printed materials. EXHIBITION An Exhibition is planned during the conference demonstrating developments in various aspects in the field of minerals and materials, including new equipments, technologies, processes, publications, consultancy and engineering services.. etc. The fee is 200 $/m 2 ; desk, 2 chairs and a stand will be available. 2
