For over 160 years, the Y has been committed to preparing our children for the future, and we are as determined as ever to continue along that path. I cannot tell you how many children come through the doors of the Y, for either childcare or summer camp, and improve academically and socially as a direct result of their Y experience. We take great pride in nurturing the future of our children through programs that reinforce and extend opportunities to learn. The Y s summer camps are structured to prevent childhood summer learning loss, which many children experience following the end of an academic school year. Our camp programs promote STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math), physical activity and are a place where children can be creative: they learn while having fun in the Y s structured camp environment. Y camps foster a child s mind, body and spirit in accordance with the Y s fundamental mission and responsibilities to the communities we serve. Our counselors are thoroughly screened, trained in CPR/First Aid, emergency preparedness and other safety measures. Beyond that, our counselors are prepared to give your child an enriched learning experience that they will not only enjoy, but also benefit from for the rest of their lives, both academically and socially. Whether it is the fun of singing camp songs, swimming, taking nature walks, participating in various sports, or the intellectual challenges of our STEAM-focused programs, the Y s counselors guide our campers in developing new interests, friends, and independence. As one of the Washington area s leading nonprofits with a focus on youth development, the Y knows the importance of nurturing every child so that they can meet their fullest potential. Our summer camp programs are designed with this idea in mind to make sure that the children we serve are prepared to succeed for years to come. Give your child a positive adventure and lasting education this summer by enrolling them in Y summer camps. It will be a healthy, fun and supportive learning experience from which they will not only benefit in several ways, but also want to return to again and again. Campers will be split up and provided different low key, age appropriate activities for your camper. Part of the time in after care is spent on activities that combat summer learning loss. 4. What does a typical day at camp look like? Each camp is unique but follows similar schedules. Swim times may vary depending on what camp they are attending. The following is a sample schedule. The following is a sample schedule. 9:00am Morning Meeting/Ice Breakers 9:30-2:45 Camp Activities (attendance, field trips, group games, arts & crafts, water breaks, lunch, fun activities, camp songs, clean up) 2:45-3:30 Afternoon Snack 3:30-4:00 Closing Assembly (songs, skits, contests) 4:00pm Pick up/after Care 5. What should I send to camp with my child? All campers must bring a healthy, nut-free lunch, plenty to drink, morning and afternoon snacks, every day. Please only send non-perishable foods because refrigeration is not possible. Campers should also bring their own water bottle to stay hydrated during the day. Send your child to camp with a backpack to keep all of their belongings together. Please make sure everything is labeled with their name. 6. What should my camper wear to camp? Campers should wear clothing suitable for an active day at camp. Appropriate items would include shorts, t-shirts, light jackets (for chilly mornings), and closed-toed athletic shoes (NO SANDALS). Please label all items sent to camp with the child s first and last name. Our camps use discovery and play as a major part of our camp program, thus we encourage you to dress your child in clothing that you do not mind getting dirty or stained with art materials in the course of your child engaging in a fun activity. 7. Can my child s food be heated up at camp? Due to the volume of participants, we can t heat up children s meals. Please send your child with a prepared lunch that needs no heating or refrigerating. 8. Should I pack water for my child? Yes. Although we fill coolers for the kids and our staff take the children for regular trips to the restrooms and drinking fountains, parents are ultimately responsible for sending their child with plenty of fluids for the day. 9. Is there a dress code for CITs & Junior Lifeguards? Counselors in Training and Junior Lifeguards should dress just like the staff wearing black or khaki shorts or pants and CIT shirt. Shorts should be within three inches from the knee and worn at the waist. While swimming, girl CITs should wear a modest one-piece suit and boys should wear shorts-style suits. Sneakers should be worn daily. 10. When will my child swim? All aquatics campers will swim every day. The Great Outdoors camp will swim at the Water Mine and the swim days will be in the weekly newsletter. 11. What if my camper loses something at camp? We know that sometimes things just get lost. Please label all of your child s belongings. The best way to prevent the loss of property is to leave it at home! There will be a designated Lost and Found at each camp location. Please check there for your child s items before the end of the week. Lost and Found items will be discarded of every Monday morning at 7:00 am. The YMCA is not responsible for camper possessions that are lost or stolen. 12. What happens if my child is late for a Travel camp? Unfortunately, we cannot hold the bus for a camper who is running late. We will accept them into a camp here at the branch that peaks their interest. You may also drop off your camper at their field trip destination. 13. What happens when my child needs to be picked up early? No problem. Please contact the Y prior to pick up to ensure your child is ready. 14. I am running late. What should I do? Please contact the Y as soon as you know you or your authorized pick up person will be late. Camp aftercare ends promptly at 6:30 pm. For children not picked up by the end of the program s regular or extended hours, we will allow a five-minute grace period. After the grace period of five minutes, there will be a charge of $5 per child for every 5 minutes. 15. Does my child need money? No. Your child will have everything they need here at the YMCA. If there is a special occasion, such as a certain travel camp excursions, you and your family will be notified beforehand. 16. Can my child bring electronics? No. We are a screen-free summer camp. We believe if a camper can do the first two, having fun is guaranteed. ACTIVITIES FAIR Overnight Camp starts on Sunday between 1:00pm and 3:00pm. During your first evening, you will attend the Activities Fair. Here, you will choose the activities that will become your morning schedule for the rest of the week. MEALS Have you seen anyone join The Order of the Oar? Have you ever eaten hands-free cake on Super Hero Monday? Or nearly forgotten to eat* because lunch time suddenly became an impromptu dance party? It s almost impossible to describe the noise and fun of meal times. Three times a day, your cabin will shout and sing as you try to outperform your rival cabins, all of whom are competing for extra points towards the Crew Cup, all while eating food that seems too good to be camp food. Many meals have themes so make sure you pack something pink, a pair of knee high socks, and a tie-dye t-shirt. *Don t worry, our staff will make sure you don t forget to eat! MORNING ACTIVITIES Your three morning activities are your chance to acquire and master a new skill. So try not to choose something you do every day; pick something different and you might discover a talent you never knew you had. Programs are instructed by our diverse staff. Selected from all over the world for their experience and expertise, they will help you learn, grow and have the time of your life. In fact our great staff is the reason many campers come back year after year. AFTERNOON CABIN AND CREW ACTIVITIES The afternoons are your chance to explore all that camp has to offer. After Siesta, you will go to activity period 4. Every day you will be able to do something different. The rest of the afternoon is spent in Cabin and Crew activities. You will meet back up with your cabin and catch up on your morning activities before doing activities together as a group. Only time and imagination limit what you and your bunkmates can achieve. It might be jewelry making in arts and crafts, kayaking on the river, building shelters in the woods or exploring Monster Island. The afternoon s activities at Camp are designed to be fun and recreational, and an opportunity to get to know your bunkmates. TRY OUT OVERNIGHT CAMP AGES 6-8 Specially designed for first time campers, this two night, three day stay at camp is a great way to explore all of the fun we have to offer. Let your counselors take you and your bunk-mates on a tour of just about everything we do. Canoe, kayak or sail the Rhode River, try a pony ride, learn a new sport and design a masterpiece in Arts and Crafts. We ll take you sea-sledding, for a polar bear plunge at the pool, teach you campfire songs, reveal the secret of making the perfect s more; all this while you make great new friends! CAMP LETTS EVENING ACTIVITY When the sun starts to set, Camp comes alive. We hold a camp-wide activity or game each night, which ties in to the weekly theme. It also uses as many parts of camp as we can, so you really get a chance to explore. Evening games help your crew earn points towards the Crew Cup. CAMP LETTS CAMPS ALSO INCLUDE: Equestrian Sailing Canoeing and Kayaking Water Skiing Zip Line Paintball Archery High Adventures And much more! 26 SUMMER CAMP 2017 YMCA of Metropolitan Washington 1.800.473.YMCA ymcadc.org 703.742.8800 YMCA FAIRFAX COUNTY RESTON 27
