DAY 03 THURSDAY DARWIN S TRAIL Breakfast at Lodge. Sailing to Wulaia Bay it is very appealing not only because of its wonderful landscapes but also because represents one of the most important historical moments of modern science: Young Darwin meets with the local communities, the cultural end of human evolution according to his own words. Wulaia is of extraordinary beauty, considered the historical capital city of Tierra del Fuego. It is the place where Commander Fitz-Roy and Young naturalist Charles Darwin returned with the 3 indigenous known as Jemmy Button, Fuegia Basket and York Minster, after an educative trip to England. It is the same place where many years after, Button and his people massacred a large number of English missionaries. By the end of XIX century, Peace returned to Wulaia with the settlement of estancias (cattle ranch), and a radio station which remains can be visited.we will have the possibility to enjoy a nice view of the Beagle Channel and Ushuaia, the picturesque and narrow Murray Channel which divide Hoste Island and Navarino as well as Button Island coastal beaches. We will sail the same trail done 200 years before. If we are lucky enough we will have the chance to see a wide number of pelagic birds, seal colonies, dolphins and penguins. Dinner and accommodation at Lakutaia Lodge.
DAY 04 FRIDAY PUERTO WILLIAMS Breakfast at the lodge. Undoubtedly, the best view of the Beagle Channel and of the city of Puerto Williams is from the Bandera Hill lookout point. During this hike, which takes us to the summit through a well-marked trail, it is interesting to observe the changes in the environment. At the start it is dense and wooded turning into an alpine ecosystem at the end, dominated by lichen, moss and other species that have adapted to the wind and low temperatures. In this tour we also learn about native flora like orchids and the many local wild fruits. Return to the lodge. Lunch. Even though our geography may be the farthest place from all rest of the world, a great number of accomplished explorers and navigators have been extensively visiting it for many centuries. And many left their famous tracks. Drake, Skottsberg, FitzRoy and Cook are some of the names that wrote the History of this world s end. Nevertheless, thousands of years earlier, a group of humans successfully inhabited Cape Horn, land considered by young Darwin as the worst geography ever known by mankind. These were the Yamana, the southernmost people on Earth. Lakutaia invites you to get to know the extraordinary anthropology of this region and its incredible human history. We will visit Ukika Village, current Yamana neighborhood and the Martin Gusinde Museum. Return to the lodge. Farewell dinner and overnight.
