GRINDELWALD SKI TOURING WEEK 2018 TRIP NOTES

Grindelwald Ski Touring Week 2018 Trip Notes All material Copyright Adventure Consultants Ltd 2017/2018 Switzerland is home to some of the world s best winter terrain offering an endless amount of amazing skiing and the infrastructure that makes it easily accessible. This ski-touring week is based in the wellknown ski town of Grindelwald, which has the envious location under the mighty Eiger. Enjoy waking up each morning knowing that you have the option of skiing numerous runs beneath the spectacular mountains that surround the village. Or enjoy un-tracked powder turns through the numerous tree runs. Your guide will enjoy taking you to the best locations giving you the opportunity to make the most of the snow, terrain, location and the beauty of this area. History The European Alps are full of climbing and skiing history. They are the birthplace of mountaineering and the rich heritage adds to the superb facilities (catered huts and lift systems), which provide for mountaineers and ski-tourers that is not seen elsewhere. Tour Programme Overview Day 0 Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Arrive into Grindelwald and overnight at hotel. Travel up the first cable car, then onto the Oberjoch (2,486m) and from here, we ascend to the Faulhorn (2,681m) where we take in the views of the Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau and Lake Brienz. We then ski down to 1,600m near Bussalp or to the valley floor at 930m. This provides us with a good warm-up day. Overnight at Grindelwald hotel. This morning we head to Isenfluh, where we catch a tiny 6 person cable car up to Sulwald (1,500m). From here, we ascend to Klein Löbhorner at 2,519m and ski towards the scenic Soustal. There will be an option to combine this with ascending Schwalmere for an extra 400m ascent. We finish the day off by descending back to Isenfluh (1,080m) for another hotel night. We head off to explore the Rosenlaui Valley from where we will ascend from the Schwarzwaldalp Hotel, which is situated under the Wellhorn (3191m) for an 1100m ascent and powder descent. Overnight at hotel.

Day 4 Day 5 Day 6 Our objective today is the head up to the Oberjoch and then ascend the Reeti (2,577m), before moving onto the Uf Spitzen (2,381m) for some steeper powder skiing. We finish the day by skiing back to Grindelwald and spend another night at the hotel. We travel through the famous Lauterbrunnen Valley and take the lifts to the Schilthorn (2,980m). From here, we ski some exciting ridgelines towards a 400m ascent to the summit of Hundshorn (2,930m), which culminates in a 2,000m vertical descend to the Kien Valley (950m). We finish the day with a celebratory drink on the train that will take us back to Grindelwald. Enjoy a final hotel night. Depart for home. Level of Experience Required To ski tour in the European Alps, you need to be physically fit, and be capable of strenuous exercise each day. Most days will start early, but there is usually some scope for some later starts and relaxed evenings to enjoy the classic European culture. Even skiing and climbing at the moderate altitudes in Europe has a definite physical effect on people. Most climbers and skiers notice a lower performance rate than normal. Touring days are physically demanding and can entail 1,000m/3,300ft ascent at altitude. Our Guides Adventure Consultants guides are BMG/NZMGA and/or IFMGA-UIAGM qualified mountain guides. They are professional mountaineers and operate to the highest industry standards. Being a technically proficient climber alone is not enough to work with us; our standards demand that trip leaders are great guides as well. You will find your guide friendly, approachable and focused on providing a safe and enjoyable trip in line with your objectives and comfort level. Success with the highest margin of care is always a hallmark of our approach; promoting the realisation that even extreme pursuits such as high altitude mountaineering can be undertaken safely. Adventure Consultants only employs IFMGA qualified guides for European ascents and courses and this is the only certification that is recognised in the French Alps. In order to gain these qualifications guides must undergo rigorous training and assessment on climbing skills, instructional skills, avalanche training and assessment, wilderness first aid, rescue training and much more. The qualification takes many years to attain and ensures you are getting a world-class professional service.

Communication and Messages Our guides are in cell phone communication with our operations base throughout the trip. This assists us with schedule and weather forecast updates, lift and accommodation co-ordination and safety backup. Your own mobile phone should work in the region though you may want to check with your own service provider first. Local mobile phones can be rented at the international airports.
