REMEMBERING THE GREAT WAR Belgium, France & Germany June 6 to 15, 2014 Champagne vineyards. WORLD WAR I, KNOWN AS THE GREAT WAR AND THE WAR TO END ALL WARS, BEGAN IN JUNE OF 1914 WITH AN ASSASSIN S BULLET AND ENDED FOUR YEARS LATER, WITH THREE ROYAL HOUSES RUINED AND MORE THAN NINE MILLION SOLDIERS DEAD. Learn their brave and tragic stories as you travel from Brussels to Baden- Baden to commemorate the centennial of this event. From the Belgian capital, drive to Ypres to tour the recently opened In Flanders Fields Museum and see the spot where the eponymous poem was written. Visit historic battlefields and cemeteries and attend the Last Post, a nightly bugle tribute to the dead. Relive the wartime events on a private guided tour of the Somme before continuing to Reims, France, for a visit and dinner in the cellars of a well-known Champagne house. View the war museum and cemeteries of Verdun, where over 300,000 soldiers died. In Metz, stop at the Centre Pompidou en route to the spa town of Baden-Baden, Germany. Tour the Richard Meier-designed Museum Frieder Burda and attend a concert at the Festspielhaus, Germany s largest opera house, followed by a private, onstage farewell dinner with the artists. HARVARD STUDY LEADER SUE WEAVER SCHOPF is Associate Dean for the Master of Liberal Arts program at the Harvard Extension School and a lecturer in Extension. She came to Harvard as an Andrew W. Mellon Faculty Fellow after completing a PhD in English at Vanderbilt University. Schopf first taught in Extension in 1982, and has been associated with the ALM program since 1986. In addition to advising graduate students in the humanities on their thesis projects, she teaches literature courses on topics as far ranging as English romantic poetry, modern poetry, literary criticism, western drama, Milton and Paradise Lost, and Orientalism in British literature. As faculty lecturer on more than 30 Harvard Alumni Association travel-study programs, Schopf has spoken on a variety of literary and art historical subjects throughout Europe, and in Turkey and Egypt. On this program she will speak about the poetry of the war by Rupert Brooke, Siegfried Sassoon, Wilfred Owen, and others; as wells as prose accounts by Erich Maria Remarque (All Quiet on the Western Front) and Ernest Hemingway (A Farewell to Arms) and nonfiction such as Robert Graves Good-bye to All That. BRUSSELS, BELGIUM SATURDAY, JUNE 7 Arrive in Brussels and transfer to the elegant Hotel Amigo. An afternoon architectural walking tour includes the Grote Markt, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Town Hall, and the Breadhouse. Gather in the early evening for introductory remarks by your study leader, Sue Weaver Schopf, followed by a welcome dinner. BRUSSELS SUNDAY, JUNE 8 Attend a morning lecture on the Great War, then continue to the Museum of Fine Arts with its superb collection of Flemish paintings. After lunch, a private tour is arranged at the Solvay House, Victor Horta s Art Nouveau masterpiece. The remainder of the day is at leisure. BRUSSELS / YPRES, BELGIUM MONDAY, JUNE 9 Drive to Ypres to see the recently opened In Flanders Fields Museum at the famous Cloth Hall, You may wish to climb the adjacent bell tower for an extraordinary view of what was once a completely devastated region. Arrive at the Hotel Messeyne in Kortjik in time for check-in and lunch. This afternoon visit two battlefield cemeteries and see where poet John McCrae wrote In Flanders Fields. Following an early dinner in Ypres, attend the Last Post, a deeply moving ceremony that takes place each evening under the vast arch of the Menin Gate. YPRES / REIMS, FRANCE TUESDAY, JUNE 10 Depart for Reims, in the French Champagne region. En route, visit the Historial de la Grande Guerre Museum in Péronne. After lunch at a local restaurant tour the battle sites of the Somme, an international space where more than twenty nationalities came to fight. Arrive in Reims and check in at the Hotel De La Paix. REIMS / BADEN-BADEN, GERMANY FRIDAY, JUNE 13 Depart for Baden-Baden, stopping in Metz to visit Cathedral St. Etienne, with its suberb stained-glass windows. Then see Centre Pompidou, one of the most visited cultural venues in France. Following lunch at leisure, continue to the spa town of Baden-Baden, in the foothills of the Black Forest. REIMS WEDNESDAY, JUNE 11 A short drive takes you to Fort de la Pompelle, which played a principal role in the defense of the Reims sector during WWI. Then visit the Romanesque Basilica of St. Rémi before arriving at the magnificent 13th-century cathedral, Nôtre Dame de Reims, which sustained heavy damage in World War I. Following lunch at leisure, discover the art of Champagne making at a renowned Champagne house. Tour the cellars and enjoy a tasting before dinner in the caves. REIMS THURSDAY, JUNE 12 Attend a morning lecture before driving to Verdun, site of some of the fiercest battles of the Great War. Stop at Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, the largest American military cemetery in Europe. After lunch, see the 17th-century citadel with its museum commemorating the 1916 German attack, and visit Douaumont Ossuary, housing the remains of 130,000 unidentified French and German soldiers who perished during the Hell of Verdun. The evening is at leisure in Reims. BADEN-BADEN SATURDAY, JUNE 14 This morning discover architectural delights from Baden-Baden s Belle Époque, including the Kurhaus Casino, which inspired Russian writer Dostoyevsky s novel The Gambler. On a private tour of the new Museum Frieder Burda, designed by architect Richard Meier, see the excellent modern and contemporary collection. Then visit Johannes Brahm s summer home, where he composed many of his famous works. Lunch and the afternoon are at leisure. Conclude the day with a concert at the Festspielhaus (opera house), followed by an on-stage Auf Wiedersehen dinner with the artists. BADEN-BADEN / U.S.A. CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS All cancellations must be made in writing to HAA Travels and are subject to a $350 nonrefundable administrative fee. Cancellations received between 120 and 91 days prior to departure will be charged a fee in the amount of 20 percent of the program cost per person; those received between 90 and 61 days before departure, 50 percent; no refunds will be given for cancellations received within 60 days of departure. No refunds are given for cancellation on or after the day of departure, or for unused portions of the tour, for any reason. CHANGES IN ITINERARY & COSTS The itinerary is subject to change at the discretion of HAA Travels and the tour operator. Deviations from the scheduled itinerary are at the expense of the individual. All prices quoted are based on prevailing fuel prices, airfare, and currency exchange rates in effect at the time of brochure printing and are subject to change. While the tour operator will do everything possible to maintain the published trip price, it may be necessary to institute a surcharge.
