Dutch shipbuilding has a long history spanning many centuries Dutch-made ships In the 1980s the industry started to focus on high-tech, specialised ships. Large Dutch shipbuilders such as Damen and Royal IHC have grown into multinational companies, but at the same time, there are still a significant number of smaller dedicated builders active in for example the North of the Netherlands, where the focus is on construction of short sea cargo vessels. Ship repair & conversion, a vibrant industry in the Netherlands Damen Shiprepair has become a market leader in Europe. It has now even spread its wings outside Europe, by opening a repair yard on the Caribbean island of Curaçao. In addition, a number of smaller and highly creative repair and conversion yards continue to thrive in the Netherlands. Yards such as Rotterdam Offshore Group and Royal Niestern Sander. Newbuilding and repair of fishing vessels and inland cargo ships The Dutch-flagged inland cargo fleet numbers some 6,000 vessels, providing a good basis for a large industry. The current low oil price and good fish prices are fuelling a strong recovery of the fishing fleet too, with some highly innovative newbuilds giving a boost to the market. 100 shipyards Dutch superyacht builders on the forefront of the yachtbuilding industry for decades Have you already seen our fully customised large yachts over 30 metres in length? In recent years, Dutch superyacht builders have gone from strength to strength and are now redefining the Dutch shipbuilding landscape by constructing large dedicated new yards, including the first major drydock to be built in the Netherlands since the 1980s. 4
