what s on International Wrestling Australia - adventure for the whole family! Continued from page 2 The IWA team has held over thousands of events at venues such as Wonderland Sydney Theme Park, Sydney, Melbourne & Canberra Royal Shows, and toured their show overseas successfully in Tahiti and New Caledonia. The men and women who create the performance team of International Wrestling Australia are indeed entertainers but their strength and durability is far beyond that of your average actor or musician. At 115kgs plus, these men (and women) take up to half hour of being jumped on, thrown down, pushed over and kicked and still have the strength to pick each other up and then do it all again the following night. At any given IWA Pro Wrestling show you can expect to see a good mix of about 6-10 wrestlers, from small masked high fl yers to giant superheavyweights. There are women wrestlers, valet girls, tag teams and their managers. IWA Pro Wrestling plots comical, often very funny storylines that are relevant to Australian audiences. It s a different routine at every IWA Pro Wrestling show, new bouts, new plots, new gimmicks and new talent. There is always a lot of posing going on, lots of body oil and lycra to be seen. There is the grand entrances, great music, the referees, the announcers and so much more. IWA Pro Wrestling is an amazing experience that must be seen live. Don t miss this night of fantastic live action at the Muswellbrook District Workers Club on Saturday 21 June commencing at 7pm. Tickets are on sale now at the club. creative arts Fleece Festival doesn t drop a stitch By Rebecca Jenkins It will be a very big and woolly event in Merriwa this June long weekend. But it can be said that the 24th ROSTO Olives Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces will exceed all expectations. With the theme being Australian Wool, the festival has knitted together events and activities for the whole family without dropping a stitch. Over the years, the event has gained in notoriety with thousands of festival goers travelling from locations all over Australia to attend the twoday-long Merriwa extravaganza. The Running of the Sheep has become especially popular with thousands of visitors lining the streets to catch a glimpse of these four-legged critters marching proudly in their red woolly socks. The remainder of the parade features local businesses, schools, community service persons and marching bands. Another highlight of the FOTF is defi nitely the Australian Bush Poets Breakfast. This year the breakfast will feature a number of talented performers with the man of many voices, Greg North, hosting the event. Of course, during the entertainment, a hot breakfast and beverages will be served. It doesn t just stop there. There are markets, shearing and rescue demonstrations, musical acts, street-acts and much, much more local goodness. There is also a cornucopia of delights for the youngsters, including laser tag, a petting zoo, a reptile show, Sparkles the Clown, rides and circus performers. Not only is the festival entertaining to attend, but it s all for a good cause. The Festival of the Fleeces is a proud supporter of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and the Merriwa Volunteer Rescue Association. The Festival of the Fleeces committee would like to thank all of its supporters and hope you have a memorable visit to Merriwa for this fantastic event this weekend 7 and 8 June. Despite the fact that the FOTF has reached its 24th year, the festival hasn t grown stale, refl ecting Merriwa s reputation of being likened to a breath of fresh air! food & wine Jolly jumble is jolly good By Rebecca Jenkins The Denman Farmers and Artisans Markets are known for housing some of the best produce the locals have to offer. But in June, the usual produce only rule is pushed aside as arts, crafts and other eclectic stalls join forces with the local producers during the Jolly June Jumble. This Saturday, Lions Park will be fi lled with gourmet food and art of all shapes and sizes. April s markets displayed such producers as Hunter Belle, Horner s Honey, Stone Hill Wines, Colleen the Flower Lady, Freud s Windmills, Sonia s Scented Sense, Ellamara s Garden, Daryl and Shirley Butler s Veggies and Relishes, Pat s Plants and Terry O Hara s Podkins...and THAT was just the tip of the market s iceberg! Amongst all the cheeses, cakes, wines, olives, honey, relishes, plants, veggies and other gourmet goodies will be candles, bags, toys, aprons, cushions, fl owers and many other bits and bobs yet to be announced. Even better news is that every month, there is a featured benefi ciary that sets up shop to raise money for for a good cause. This month, it ll be St Josephs Primary School. The markets themselves are not-for-profi t and are run by the Denman Farmers Markets Association. Meetings are held every month and their calendar is fi lled with a variety of other events, talks and points of interest. But by far, the association s crowning event is the Farmers and Artisans Markets. The Denman Farmers and Artisans Markets will be held this Saturday in Lions Park at the top of Olgilvie Street and open from 8-1pm. equine trend & more Watch out canine Parvo is about! By Dr Peta Gay Railton There is still a concerning number of dogs this autumn that are dying from Parvo. Parvo is a normally fatal canine gastrointestinal virus. Muswellbrook and surrounding areas hold the record for having one of the highest incidences of Parvo in NSW. Last week we had a dog not up-to-date with his vaccinations that was vomiting and had diarrhoea. He tested positive to the disease and pulled through treatment but was critically ill for over a week in hospital. The dog had not left his owner s property and had not been introduced to any other dogs. The virus is highly contagious, being commonly transferred via peoples hands, shoes, bags and clothes. Dog to dog contact is not necessary for infection. Supermarket disinfectant used to clean clothes, house surfaces or your dog s belongings does not kill the virus; therefore you need a special product stocked only by vets. As it is impossible to clean every surface, vaccination is essential. We vets hate seeing dogs die from this 100% preventable disease. When you buy a puppy, take it to your vet to receive all three Parvo booster vaccinations, which should start at 6-8weeks of age. From then on it is a simple and quick yearly vaccination. Pet Medical is committed to ridding this area of the disease in 5 years, and we can only do this if the community understands the importance of vaccination and makes it a necessity for their dog rather than an optional extra. Let s make the Upper Hunter Parvovirus free. Image: Dr Peta Gay Railton. Parvovirus is a deadly, persistent killer that can survive in the soil for years. The only way to beat it is to be even more persistent with annual vaccinations for every dog in our community. leisure & lifestyle Improving services for people with disabilities Lee Watts, manager of the Scone and Aberdeen Neighbourhood Centres announced today that a partnership between the Neighbourhood Centre, Ability Links and Local Mobility has resulted in the donation of a motorised scooter to the Neighbourhood Centre to improve access to train services for those who rely on using a scooter and for others needing short-term access to one. The Neighbourhood Centre identifi ed that there are strict limits on the size of scooters which are able to travel on NSW trains. Many scooters, particularly those which have been modifi ed do not meet those size limits making it diffi cult or impossible for some people to use train services. Brad Keegan, from Ability Links, identifi ed the same issue in working with clients in Scone. While exploring options he made contact with Local Mobility manager Tom Ryan whose company sells and maintains mobility aids. In response to this approach, Local Mobility offered to donate a second-hand scooter to the Neighbourhood Centre to make available for short-term hire. Mr Ryan said that this initiative to improve the independence of people is something he strongly supports. Lee Watts said, I am pleased that we have been able to fi nd a solution which now makes it easier for people whose disability makes it diffi cult for them to travel. Using the train services is taken for granted by most of us, but those who need their scooters to move around can fi nd a train trip almost impossible. This donation will give people more options as well as giving others access to short term hire if needed. Image: Mark Bones Curtis, Lee Watts and Brad Keegan. Greater Northern Tigers success Congratulations to the Greater Northern Tigers senior squad and coach Darryl Rando who defeated the Western Rams 12-6 last Sunday at Resco Park Singleton. leisure & lifestyle Lighting up the stage with burning talent By Rebecca Jenkins The greatest female story-telling duo in country music is back and gracing stages throughout the country. The Sunny Cowgirls are once again on the road, but this tour will prove something special as the girls are set to strip back and show the true extent of their talents. Sisters Sophie and Celeste Clabburn have cut back on the extras in their Up Close and Personal tour. They ll be performing their vast collection of hits in an intimately acoustic show, revealing new meaning and a rawness to their music. But that certainly doesn t mean that the show itself won t have the odd surprise. With the Sunny Cowgirls, you never know what to expect and every show is never the same as the next! Growing up on a family farm called Sunninghill (which is where the girls acquired their name), the Sunny Cowgirls worked hard to get where they are today, raising the money themselves before approaching renowned Perth producer Mark Donahue and creating their debut album, Little Bit Rusty in 2008. Five albums later, they re known as one of the greatest duos in country music. Known for their lively performances and fl uid story-telling lyrics, this tour will mark a new chapter in their career. It ll reveal more about their creative versatility and should not be missed by any country music fan. The Sunny Cowgirls will be playing at Muswellbrook RSL on 22nd August. Tickets are onsale now!
