Papua New Guinea Village Project Immerse yourself in a fascinating tribal world and get involved in a variety of activities and programmes designed to cross the cultural boundary. Welcome to a spectacular land, covered in rainforest, surrounded by coral reefs, populated by hundreds of traditional communities and innumerable numbers of animals and plants a place that remains culturally, ecologically and geographically unique. Papua New Guinea makes up the eastern part of the island of New Guinea, which lies in the far Pacific Ocean. Its capital is Port Moresby, yet in spite of this colonial name the island itself is home to over 800 indigenous tongues. It is a country that has escaped "discovery" by other nations and a myriad of rare birds, mammals; flora, insects and amphibians inhabit its interior. It boasts rainforests, low forests, montane forests, swamplands, grasslands and savannah. From the Star mountain range flows the river Fly, while the great Sepik River winds for over 1,000 km to the western seas. Immerse yourself in humid tropics and discover the secrets of Papua New Guinea. Wake up to morning mists, refresh yourself in wild rivers and cascading waterfalls and live amongst the Kentiga tribe of the Western Highlands. The Kentiga people have lived here for centuries, fishing the rivers and surviving on subsistence agriculture and forest products, now you too can experience this mysterious land and immerse yourself in its magical culture. PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS Discover the secrets of Papua New Guinea Immerse yourself in a fascinating tribal world Use your creativity &initiative to get involved &push things forward PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

Minimum age of 18 years FAST FACTS Location Activities Transport Accommodation Papua New Guinea Teach about conservation, eco-tourism, eco-forestry, agro-forestry, climate change Teach about HIV/ AIDS, primary health Primary education (teaching and research) Infrastructure development Social &cultural activities Short domestic flight Shared volunteer house WHAT WILL I BE DOING? You will become immersed in a fascinating tribal world, and while you discover a completely different way of life you will bring your international experience to the villagers, sharing perspectives and fostering cultural understanding and tolerance. Just your presence crosses a cultural divide, and offers the members of this remote community a genuine experience of another world. The village has developed an exciting and innovative community project and now needs a team of international volunteers to bring interesting lessons and activities to its young generation. Different areas of focus are in conservation, eco-tourism, eco-forestry, agro-forestry, climate change, HIV/ AIDS, primary health, primary education (teaching and research), infrastructure development and social and cultural activities. However, teaching and education is always a priority and whatever skills and insights you can bring to your lessons will be greatly appreciated. The community has a new school and now requires teachers and teaching assistants to help educate its children. Previously students had to travel hours to reach local villages that had school facilities, eventually they decided to build their own, and do some home tutoring! Its not just English tuition that is needed but anything you are interested in and passionate about yourself whether that's sports, science, music, maths, drama or dance. Previous accomplishments have included painting a huge world map mural and rehearsing and producing a play. As well as fun in the classroom there is much opportunity to get involved in other community organisations. This project is not rigidly structured and calls for volunteers to really use their creativity and initiative to get involved and push things forward. The villagers are warm, hospitable people, eager to learn about the world beyond

their secluded environment and to introduce volunteers to their gentle way of life. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE? You will arrive in Port Moresby International Airport from where you will take the short domestic flight to Mt Hagen Kagamuga airport in the Western Highlands Province. Here you will be welcomed by your project host and transferred to the Village. WHERE WILL I BE STAYING? You will stay in a volunteer house which can accommodate up to 10 volunteers. A laundry service is provided by a team of local girls who will wash your clothes in the rivers! Imagine waking to the sounds of birds and watching the mist rising from the hazy treetops. You'll rinse-off with a rainforest shower and dry-off in the heat. The accommodation is simple, with no electricity or running water, and life is easy as a result, as your mind, body and soul return to the natural rhythms of the planet. You will rise with the sun and sleep when it sets. WHAT WILL I BE EATING? Explore the local produce of the area, source and buy food from agricultural markets and grocers. Vegetables are fresh and affordable, meat a little more expensive but there's a good selection: pork, beef, chicken and fish are all locally available. You can cook your own food and also experience the Kentigan cuisine on offer, if you prefer a local chef will prepare some traditional dishes for you at a small cost. COSTS 4 weeks US$ 2,045
