ARCHITECTURE A SPECTACULAR GESAMTKUNSTWERK THE ELBPHILHARMONIE. MORE THAN JUST A CONCERT HALL In the five months since the grand opening on 11 and 12 January 2017, some 300 high-class concerts covering a wide range of genres have enticed nearly 500,000 music lovers into the Elbphilharmonie. In the same period, over 2.5 million guests have visited the Plaza, Hamburg s new public space that offers unique panoramic views over the port and city. The Elbphilharmonie and its architecture are symbolic of the maritime, kaleidoscopic flair of the Hanseatic city, which continually reshapes its future by combining tradition and modernity, and expressing courage, creativity and a cosmopolitan openness. Located in the flow of the River Elbe at the western point of the HafenCity Hamburg, opposite the Landungsbrücken piers and in close proximity to the Speicherstadt, Kontorhausviertel and Chilehaus UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg is positioned between the docks and the city centre, and is regarded as Hamburg s new landmark. The spectacular, 110-metre-high glass facade rises up like a wave of glass, and literally seems to hover above the rugged brick base of the historic quayside warehouse. With seating for up to 2,100 guests, the Grand Hall is the true centrepiece of the concert hall designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron. The seats rise in a steep incline to encircle the stage for an entirely new music experience, rooted in acoustic perfection and an unprecedented closeness between artists and concertgoers. An organ with 4,765 pipes also forms part of the Grand Hall. In addition, the complex contains the multifunctional Recital Hall with 550 seats and the interactive»world of Instruments«, housed in the Kaistudios; and there is a hotel with 244 rooms, residential apartments, a multistorey car park, restaurants and cafes.
MUSIC A LIMITLESS MUSICAL EXPERIENCE»There is no light music or serious music, just good music and bad music.«never before has this legendary quotation (which is attributed to Leonard Bernstein) been as true as in the case of the Elbphilharmonie. The guiding principle behind Hamburg s new concert hall can be summed up in two words: good music. The Elbphilharmonie sees itself as a»concert hall for everyone«. Thus the musical programme is structured to be varied and inviting, offering captivating concert experiences to connoisseurs and newcomers alike. Concerts and concertante opera performances in the Grand Hall featuring the world s best orchestras, conductors and soloists represent the supreme discipline. Piano, string quartet and lieder evenings in the Recital Hall offer a more intimate, but no less emotional listening experience. The Hamburg ensembles most notably the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester as resident orchestra in the Grand Hall and Ensemble Resonanz in the Recital Hall play a substantial part in the programme. However, the Elbphilharmonie s programme reaches well beyond the boundaries of classical music. Audiences are treated to jazz and world music by the biggest names in the scene, as well as cutting-edge, intelligent pop, folk and crossover music. Key focus areas and theme festivals ensure that there is a structure to the programme. The Elbphilharmonie wants to make the world of music accessible to as many people as possible. The aspiration is to eliminate entry thresholds and to make those people feel welcome for whom attending a concert is not (yet) a natural impulse. Thus great importance is attached to concerts for children, school pupils and families. The»World of Instruments«, with its wide and diverse range of creative workshops, offers people of all ages the chance to get to know and play all manner of musical instruments. The Elbphilharmonie has even established ensembles of its own. Some of these events still take place in the Laeiszhalle. After all, Hamburg s time-honoured concert hall on Johannes-Brahms-Platz is managed by the same company as the Elbphilharmonie. Together, they guarantee an urban music scene of the utmost sophistication.
