Regensburg, August 2014 Invitation Dear member cities of the OWHC in North-West Europe, We would like to kindly invite you to our 2014 Regional Conference, taking place in the city of Quedlinburg/Germany from 13 th to 14 th of November. Quedlinburg welcomes the guests of the conference on occasion of its 20 th anniversary of becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is proud to host our convention. In order to enhance the thematic background for the next OWHC World Congress in 2015, the main topic of our conference will be: Crisis as Opportunity for World Heritage Cities Resilience We will offer a variety of speakers, reporting on their experience from daily work in World Heritage Cities and the different ways of resilience that are already implemented. Please find the content of our speakers list in the attached programme (modifications possible). We invite you to plan arrival at Quedlinburg for Wednesday Nov. 12 th evening and get together for an informal dinner at Romantikhotel Am Brühl. Thursday Nov 13 th, we would start the conference at the Wyndham Garden Stadtschloss Hotel with welcome addresses on behalf of the inviting Lord Mayors of Quedlinburg and Regensburg and our OWHC Secretary General. Then we grant time to Quedlinburg for a presentation of the city and its special heritage with the German Framework Centre. The afternoon of the first conference day is then dedicated to the thematic focus on resilience, hearing four different speakers with their local aspects of withstanding hazards and acting resilient as a historical city. We are finishing the day with the Delegates Meeting for all member cities in good standing, where the regional secretary will report on the working programme and future projects. The city of Quedlinburg invites all guests to participate in the evening programme with a special musical introduction and an official dinner afterwards. On the second day, Friday Nov. 14 th, the conference will start with two informative presentations on Enhancing the UNESCO World Heritage Label and HerMan project before the participants are asked to join in the Pecha Kucha kaleidoscope on Our Heritage Cities. With a tour through Quedlinburg s Old Town district and a final lunch at the restaurant M7 for all participants, the conference is planned to end Friday afternoon.

Please mind that the hotel room reservation has to be made separately through the Quedlinburg Tourist Marketing service with an extra confirmation sheet. Location Quedlinburg is a town located north of the Harz mountains, in the district of Harz in the west of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Since December 1994, the old town of Quedlinburg and the castle mount with the collegiate church are listed as one of UNESCO s World Heritage Sites. Quedlinburg is one of the best-preserved medieval and renaissance towns in Europe, having escaped major damage in World War II and famous for its wide selection of half-timbered buildings. Registration May we ask you to confirm your participation in the Regional Conference by submitting the attached registration form to the regional secretariat in Regensburg by September 30th at the latest. Please mind that the conference participation is free for all member cities in good standing (paying the yearly fees to OWHC in Québec), whereas non-members are asked to pay a fee of 50 Euros (which will be billed after confirmation of participation). The conference fee includes all meals and the evening dinner programme, coffee breaks and soft drinks during the conference. Any alcoholic beverages as well as drinks at the first evening have to be covered on your own. Accommodation The Quedlinburg Tourist Marketing arranged for hotel room reservations which can be guaranteed with a special price for our conference members until September 30 th. The conference itself will take place at the Wyndham Garden Hotel historical event rooms, whereas dinner on the first evening and lunch on Friday will be offered at different restaurants (see the programme). Transportation Traveling by plane Quedlinburg is accessible from the airports Halle/Leipzig, Hanover, Berlin and Frankfurt. Please advise us on your arrival/departure times and we might be able to arrange transfer to Quedlinburg for groups of participants. Traveling by train Quedlinburg is served by the private railway HEX (Harz-Elbe-Express).

From direction Hanover and Halle (Saale) RE Deutsche Bahn is recommended that operates every 2 hours between Hanover and Halle. Coming from either direction, it is necessary to switch from RE in Halberstadt in the HEX. From direction Magdeburg HEX operates as direct train. All schedules of the HEX are published on the website of the company. At the train station you will find a taxi that takes you directly to your hotel. Orientation
