In 1942 the two reserves were combined, enlarged and were renamed the Central Crown Forest. This new forest covered an area of 298 square kilometres. In 1964 the forest was renamed the Impenetrable Central Forest Reserve and the area was designated and animal sanctuary with a remit to provide extra protection to the mountain gorillas. In 1966 the area was again increased to 321 square kilometres by incorporating two other forest reserves. In 1991 after the merging of Mgahinga Gorilla Forest Reserve, Rwenzori Mountains Reserve and Central Forest Reserve, the combined area was given the name Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This had a huge impact on the indigenous Pygmy tribe, the Batwa who resided in the forests as they were evicted and could no longer live in the new Park. In 1993 the first Gorilla Trekking activities were offered by the Park and the following year it was inscribed as a World Heritage Site. The Park continues to be a popular tourist destination and serves as one of only 3 places in the world where you can see Mountain Gorillas in their natural habitat. BOOKINGS You need to Book your Gorilla Permit well in advance to ensure that your requested dates are available, but no more than two years. Gorilla trekking in Bwindi can be challenging, therefore ensure fitness. The trekking experience starts at 0830AM, and can last from a few hours to a whole day. Registration at the gate commences at 0745AM. DRESSCODE Wear jungle shoes suitable for steep muddy slopes and carry rain jacket, because the park is often wet. Put on ear plugs for those who feel uncomfortable with jungle sounds. Carry rain gear, sunscreen lotion, a hat (as the weather is unpredictable) and insect repellent. Wear long sleeve shirt and trousers are essential. Carry packed lunch. RULES AND REGULATIONS For conservation reasons; visits to the gorillas are tightly controlled. The following rules apply and must be strictly adhered to: No one with a communicable disease (e.g. flu, diarrhea) is allowed to enter the park. Stay together in a tight group while with the Gorillas, don t surround them. Do not get closer than 5 Meters ( 15 feet) to the Gorillas. Do not eat or smoke when with the Gorillas or within a distance of 200 metres from the Gorillas. Turn away from the Gorillas if you have to sneeze or cough. Cover your nose and mouth in the process. Bury all human feaces a minimum of one foot deep and ensure that the hole is properly covered. Do not leave litter. All litter must be carried out of the park and disposed off properly. No person under 15 years is allowed to track Gorillas. Do not spit on vegetation or soil when in the park; use your hankie or other garment. Your group must not be more than 8 tourists and must all be over 15 years old.
