Originally it was a chapel of the Hospital Virgen de la Soledad. The building was rebuilt in 1899 and features a wide front porch and similar windows. The Santuario del Sagrado Corazón can be seen from afar due to its thin white towers. Inside you will find twelve thin columns, which are topped with Corinthian capitals that hold ten Gothic arches. You will also appreciate the oil painting, which is a copy of Joseph Fourrier s work dating to the nineteenth century. The initial Temple of San Juan de Dios was founded in 1606 as a shrine with several rooms that were used as a hospital. The construction of the present church building began in 1726 and was completed thanks to numerous donations. Inside you can see preserved sculptures of the Sacred Heart, St. Cecilia, St. Martha, St. Nicholas of Bari, St. Francisco of Padua, St. Teresa, St. Antonio, St. John Vianney and St. Eduwiges, as well as other artistic treasures. This sacred place is one of the oldest churches in Guadalajara, and it was consecrated in 1573. It has been rebuilt many times, while the sacristy is original. The building that can be seen to the left of the temple initially functioned as an Augustinian cloister, but now houses the University of Guadalajara's Escuela de Música (School of Music). Address: Calle Morelos, 188, Guadalajara, Mexico Image Courtesy of Flickr and Enrique Lopez Tamayo Biosca D) La Catedral de Guadalajara de la Asunción de María Santísima (must see) Guadalajara Cathedral or Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady is one of the most prominent tourist attraction and religious buildings in the city. This holy place is a Roman Catholic cathedral and a minor basilica. The original cathedral was founded in 1541. The present one was constructed in Renaissance style with fine neo-gothic towers. Inside you will see altars made of marble and silver, which are dedicated to numerous saints, beautiful stained glass which was imported from France, the largest organ in Mexico, and huge columns. It is also home to relics of St. Innocent, the remains of former bishops of the Archdiocese of Guadalajara, and the heart of a former Mexican president. Copyright by GPSmyCity.com - Page 5 - E) Templo de la Merced Templo de la Merced is situated near the Palacio Municipal, on Hidalgo Avenue, in the center of the city. Originally founded in 1629, the construction of the present church began in 1650 and was completed in 1721. This religious building has a Baroque façade and a fine door arch. Inside you will find several niches; the central one depicts Our Lady of Mercedes. The main altar located in the center is home to sculptures of Madonna and child. You will also see copies of paintings from the seventeenth and eighteenth century created by artist Diego Auditors. Its impressive façade features two windows, a portal, and three niches, which depict sculptures of the Virgin of Pilar in the center and Saint Joaquin and Saint Anne on both sides. The church was reconstructed in 1882 and houses beautiful vaulted ceilings. Inside you will see sculpture niches and neoclassical altars that were created by Quarry Carrara in Italy. You will also appreciate the wonderful oil paintings and murals. The church was constructed in stone during the XVIIIth century and features neoclassical elements. The Templo de Jesus Maria is one of the finest examples of colonial architecture in Guadalajara and is a prominent holy place in the city. The construction of the church began in 1752 and was completed in 1802. Its impressive façade houses beautiful ornaments, Baroque arches, niches with figures of saints, and one of the most beautiful towers in the city. Inside you will find 14 paintings, created by the talented Mexican painter of the seventeenth century Miguel Cabrera. Address: Calle San Felipe, 544, Guadalajara, Mexico Image Courtesy of Flickr and José Gómez I) Iglesia de San Diego de Alcalá Iglesia de San Diego de Alcalá is located at the intersection of Gonzalez Ortega and Garibaldi Streets in downtown Guadalajara. The construction of the original church began in 1619 as a small chapel, dedicated to San Diego de Alcala de Henares. The present church was built in the second decade of the eighteenth century and has a simple yet elegant façade. Inside you can admire four altars created in neoclassical style and arches on Corinthian columns. Address: Calle Garibaldi, 536, Guadalajara, Mexico Image Courtesy of Wikimedia and Janhatesmarcia J) Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe) is a prominent religious building dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Its construction began in 1777 and was completed after 4 years. This Catholic religious building reflects the churrigueresco and neoclassical styles. Among its highlights you will find beautiful murals and marble columns. Inside the building you will see 28 oil paintings and carved and gilded golden altars. The main altar dates back to 1779 and was created by Don José de Alcíbar. It depicts Our Lady of Guadalupe and is topped with a rich golden crown. The construction of the church was completed in 1900. Its graceful tower, windows, arches and door reflect Gothic style. The interior of the church includes image of the Virgin Refuge, main altar made of gilded metal, oil paintings, figures and sculptures.
