Egyptian temples 5th grade The Egyptian built huge stone temples to worship pharaohs and gods. Priests and priestesses conducted special services in front of the statue. Sometimes the pharaoh and queen were there, but nobody else. In a temple, priests prayed to a statue of a god or pharaoh. Being a priest was a part-time job. Most only spent three months a year at the temple, and lived at home the rest of the time. Priests had to wash twice during the day and twice at night, to make themselves clean and pure for the gods. What happened at a service? First thing in the morning, the priests woke the god, washed the statue, covered it with perfume, dressed it and gave it food. There were prayers, music and dancing too. In the evening the statue was put to bed. They believed in heaven, but they called it the Next World. All dead people were judged by the god Osiris. If they had led good lives, they lived happily ever after. For bad people, there was an evil, hungry monster waiting to gobble them up. Ordinary people didn t go inside the temples. People were only allowed in on very special occasions, such as after the birth of a child. They saw the statue of the god on festival days. People often had small statues of gods at home, too. Some family gods, like Bes and Tawaret, were worshipped at home. The Next World The Egyptians believed that embalming the body it would mean that the person could carry on living in the Next World. The mummy is a dead body which has been dried out so it lasts for thousands of years. The Egyptian believed that the dead travelled to another world, where they needed their bodies. They also believed that the heart was the most important part of the whole body. They thought that the brain was useless. Monkeys, crocodiles, cats and other sacred animals were often mummified, too. Underground tombs After many years, Egyptian stopped building pyramids. They buried important people in underground tombs instead. 1. First, workers dug a deep tunnel into a rocky cliff. 2. Then they built rooms and corridors underground. 3. They painted the walls and filled the rooms with treasure. 4. They put the coffin inside a huge box in a special room. In 1922 Explorers found a secret door hidden behind rocks. Inside were rooms crammed with glittering treasure. It was the tomb of the pharaoh Tutankhamun. The archaeologist Howard Carter found the entrance to the tomb.
