Discount Drug Mart 5K Historical Walking Tour Begin your walk on the north side of Detroit Avenue, looking at locations on the south side of the street. Your return trip will be on the south side, looking north. 15425 Detroit Avenue Construction of the Lakewood Public Library began in 1915, and it opened on May 19, 1916. The architect for the building was Charles Hopkinson, also the architect for Lakewood Schools. Photo: 1920. 15407 Detroit Avenue, SW corner of Detroit & Mars. Originally constructed as the residence of Daniel Lowe, this home became the Klanke-Parr Funeral home sometime between 1925-1930. Emil Klanke moved the business in 1935-1936 to his own home at 12629 Detroit. The Lowe house then served as A.R. & C.F. Nunn Funeral Home. It was razed for the Insurance Affiliates building, which itself was razed in 2005 for the Lakewood Public Library expansion. 15315 Detroit Avenue, SE corner of Detroit & Mars. The home of George Koch, partner in Koch & Heinke Furniture Store. He also owned George D. Koch & Son Company which sold furniture, carpets and draperies at E. 195th & Euclid. CVS now sits on the plot of land formerly occupied by this house. 14805 Detroit Avenue, SW corner of Warren & Detroit. The home of Joseph Tegardine, fourth mayor of Lakewood, 1900-1901, contained 17 rooms. It was purchased by the city at a cost of $15,500 and used as City Hall 1911-1918. In 1918, the city purchased the Rhodes house in what is now Lakewood Park as the new location for City Hall. The Tegardine house was demolished to make way for the Detroit-Warren building.

2 14805 Detroit Avenue, SW corner of Warren & Detroit The Detroit-Warren Building, constructed in 1923 with five stories, became Lakewood's first high-rise, containing the city's first elevator. It is listed on the National Register for Historic Places. 14725 Detroit Avenue, SE corner of Detroit & Warren The original building on this corner was a stone house built in 1837 as the home of Mars and Keturah Wagar. The couple came to Lakewood (then Rockport) by oxcart in 1818, and bought the land on which they built for $7/acre. This house was razed in 1882 and replaced with a frame house, below, built by their son, Francis. 14725 Detroit Avenue, SE corner of Detroit & Warren. Francis Wagar s house built circa 1888 was demolished in 1930 to make way for Bailey s Department Store, below. 14725 Detroit Avenue, SE corner of Detroit & Warren Bailey s Department Store opened in 1930 as one of the first suburban branch department stores. It closed in 1965 and was replaced by Neville's Inc. which lasted until 1968. The Bailey Building and the adjacent INA Building were purchased in 2009 by 14701 Detroit, LLC which plans to lease and renovate both buildings, adding additional first floor retail and restaurants with office space on the remaining floors. Work is in progress on the lobby of the INA Building and the St. Charles and Detroit corner, in which Panera is slated to open in September 2009.

14519 Detroit Avenue, Lakewood Hospital 3 Lakewood Hospital was organized by Dr. C. Lee Graber who built this frame house with the idea that, if the hospital project was unsuccessful, it could be converted into a double. The hospital opened in 1907 with three doctors and a 15-bed capacity. It was the first suburban hospital in the Cleveland area. A modern hospital was built in 1917, and this building became the nursing school until it was razed in 1948. 14519 Detroit Avenue, Lakewood Hospital This photo, taken from Belle Avenue, shows the back and west sides of the 1917 brick building with Dr. Graber s original frame hospital building (by then the nursing school) on the right. Photo: 1932. 14519 Detroit Avenue, Lakewood Hospital In this photo, the wing on the left is the 1917 building. The wing that faces Belle is under construction, and the rounded entrance connects the two wings. While additional changes have been made, this is essentially the configuration of the hospital today. Photo: 1939. 14305 Detroit Avenue Home of Albert Gerdum, Vice President of the Walworth Run Foundry Company. Photo: 1911. 14205 Detroit Avenue, SW corner of Robinwood Home of George Sommer, auditor for the Isaac Leisy Brewing Company. The National City Bank branch now occupies this location. Photo: 1911.

14013 Detroit Avenue, SW corner of Bunts, now former Giant Eagle. 4 Whippoorwill was the home of Dr. Jared Potter Kirtland, one of Lakewood s most illustrious citizens: naturalist, botanist, doctor, legislator, teacher, writer, and co-founder of Case Medical School. The house, built of stone in 1842, had frequent additions over the years. Dr. Kirtland s land stretched all the way to the lake. 13901 Detroit Avenue, SE corner of Bunts Tarrymore Estate was located on the southeast corner of Detroit Ave. and Bunts Rd. across the street from Jared Kirtland's estate. Parkwood Rd. was later extended south from Franklin Blvd. to Detroit Avenue, through Tarrymore where the house stood. At the time of this photo, Patrick McMyler owned Tarrymore. Photo: 1902. 13539 Detroit Avenue, SW corner of Elbur Home of Wilbur G. Bailey, President of Bailey Wallpaper Company. The house, built in 1907, was later moved around the corner to 135438 13540 Elbur Lane. Also moved from the original Bailey property was a barn or carriage house, which was converted to a residence and is now located at 13532 Elbur Lane. 13443 Detroit Avenue Home of John N. Hahn, president of J.N. Hahn Company, manufacturers of corrugated paper and paper crates. The house is now the Brinkman- Dress Funeral Home. Photo: 1911. 13335 Detroit Avenue, at Nicholson intersection The oldest frame house in Lakewood, the Nicholson House was built in 1835 by James and Betsey Nicholson, and remained in their family through four generations until 1947. The Nicholsons were very active in the community; James built the first school and first church. The house, an excellent example of New England architecture, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. In 1985 the house was saved from possible demolition by the Lakewood Historical Society, which renovated it and now maintains the property as an event rental facility.

5 13315 Detroit Avenue, SW corner of Clarence In this photo, this Queen Anne Victorian was home to attorney Martin Foran. Ennis Court currently occupies this site. Photo: 1902. 13205 Detroit Avenue, near Grace Avenue Another beautiful example of Queen Anne-style architecture, this was the home of Will P. Weaver. Photo: 1911. 13105 Detroit Avenue, SW corner of Cohassett Home of Nelson Cotabish, sales manager for the National Carbon Company (later Union Carbide) and mayor of Lakewood 1910-1912. While on business in Cohassett, MA. he admired the cobblestone houses there, incorporated them into his own home, and named the street for the town. It had 23 rooms and a third floor ballroom. About 1943, after the death of her parents, his daughter offered the home to the city as a youth center, but the offer was never accepted. Vida and her husband, Walter Logan, program and music director of radio station WTAM, used the ballroom as a dancing school. Southeast corner of Ridgewood & Detroit Avenues This Greek Revival apartment building was rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise and moved south on Ridgewood to make way for a gas station sometime between 1914 and 1928.

6 11900 Detroit Avenue Malley s Candies occupied this building (in addition to their location at Madison and Victoria) that formerly housed an A&P grocery store. The building was razed in the early 1990s to make way for the construction of Discount Drug Mart. You re at the halfway point! Grab a bottle of water, proceed east to the crosswalk at the corner and cross to the south side of the street. Continue your walk, noting the photos of locations on the north side of Detroit Avenue. 12008 Detroit Avenue Shady Nook was home to Otto Bertold, mayor of the hamlet of Lakewood 1899-1901. It later became the home and upholstery shop of Andrew Domiter. Photo: 1902. Northeast Corner of Beach and Detroit Avenues Hemlock, the Beach family homestead, after it had been expanded to 17 rooms. Henry Beach bought twenty-eight acres of land at the present Beach and Detroit Avenues, paying Gardner Oaks a hundred dollars an acre for it, with five percent off for cash. Henry also built the Beach Terrace Apartments, now individually-owned units, flanking the northwest corner of Beach and Detroit. Originally built in 1864, Hemlock was replaced by the Fairchild Chevrolet dealership. The site now awaits redevelopment. 12902 Detroit Avenue, NW corner of Thoreau This house was built in 1905 for Henry Born, manager of the Born Steel Range Company. At the time of this photo, Thoreau was known as Irene. The house later became both the home and office of Dr. Wilcox, who enclosed the front porch with glass block and converted it to his waiting room. Photo: 1911.

12628 Detroit Avenue 7 Residence of Alexander B. Allen, one of the people who helped select the name Lakewood when it became a hamlet. A golf driving range was later added to the back yard. Lakewood City Hall, dedicated October 18, 1959, currently occupies this site. 13330 Detroit Avenue, NE corner of Nicholson Home of real estate broker Henry Oppman, the house later became part of the Crestmont North Nursing Home. It was razed to make way for a larger facility. 13404 Detroit Avenue, NW corner of Nicholson Fred Stranahan, owner of this home, was a caterer whose deluxe downtown-cleveland bakery was razed for Terminal Tower. The house existed until 2004 but wasn t evident because Bobson s Hardware was built in front of it. It had been divided into apartments and used as multi-family housing before it was bought and razed by St. Edward for expansion of their parking lot. The Lakewood Historical Society salvaged and sold many fine architectural details from this home. 13606 Detroit Avenue, across from Elbur Avenue Called The Anchorage, this was the home of William Mack. The Elbur Apartments replaced this structure. Photo: circa 1902. 14206 Detroit Avenue, NE corner of Manor Park Avenue Lewis Nicholson s farmhouse was located on the northeast corner of Manor Park in the current location of the GetGo station. This house burned down in 1895, and Lewis Nicholson rebuilt on the same spot.

14206 Detroit Avenue, NE corner of Manor Park Ave. 8 This Swiss-style house replaced Lewis Nicholson s farmhouse at the corner of Manor Park and Detroit. It was constructed in 1896. The house was designed by architect Kirtland Cutter, great-grandson of Dr. Jared Potter Kirtland. 14530 Detroit Avenue The home of Lawrence Johnson, located just west of the Hall Block building. Lawrence Johnson ran one of the earliest general stores in Lakewood, located just west of this house. 14610 Detroit Avenue Shanty Company was an auto parts and accessories store. The store was opened by Arthur Kellog in 1918 across the street from this location, following Mastick s Funeral Home as occupant of this building. The store closed in 1970, and is now the site of Lakewood Center North. Detroit Avenue at St. Charles Avenue The Honam-Hotchkiss house, now known as the Oldest Stone House, was built in 1834 by John Honam, a Scottish weaver. He owned property between Belle and Warren north of Detroit to the lake. The house was built of Berea sandstone and originally stood in what would now be the middle of St. Charles Avenue. It was used as a home until 1897 and then as a post office, shoe repair shop, grocery, doctor s office and upholstery shop. This picture, taken shortly after its move to behind the building at 14700 Detroit, shows the house with two chimneys, a front porch, and the beams used to move it. The house was moved to its current location at Lakewood Park in 1952. It is maintained by the Lakewood Historical Society and serves as both the society s headquarters and as a museum that interprets life in Lakewood (then known as Rockport) in the 19th century. The museum is open for tours Wednesdays 1-4 pm and Sundays 2-5 pm. Photo: 1901.

14708 Detroit Avenue 9 This was the office of Dr. Charles L. Woods and Dr. Albert McClure. It was located approximately where Geiger s Clothing and Sports stands today. Photo: 1902. 14800 14806 Detroit Avenue, NW corner of Warren Previously the site of the Lakewood Market, this photo shows Marshall s Drug on the corner; Carson s Department Store just to the west, and American Legion Post 66 on the second floor. Lakewood Presbyterian Church also met on the second floor before building a church at the corner of Detroit & Marlowe. First Federal of Lakewood now occupies this building. 14904 Detroit Avenue, NW corner of Cook The Cook Medical Building with Woolworth s occupying the first floor. The building is owned by the Rossens, and the Woolworth s space is home to their business, Rozi s Wine House. The Lakewood Observer occupies upper floor space. Photo: 1963 15316 Detroit Avenue The Andrews Family home. Its 80 acres of orchards extended north to Lake Erie. Members of the Andrews and French families can be seen in this photo. This is another picture of the Andrews home, above, after the addition of a large veranda. Razed in the 1930s, it stood in what is now the parking lot of the Discount Drug Mart plaza.

10 15300-15412 Detroit Avenue The Mars Shopping Center which, at the time of this photo, included the Bowl-Mor, Fisher Foods and the A&P, burned in 1963. It is now the site of the Discount Drug Mart plaza. The Masonic Temple can be seen on the right. 15422 Detroit Avenue, NE corner of Arthur Avenue First Church of Christian Scientists opened in 1922. The building is now owned and occupied by Maxxum Group, Inc., a commodity plastics trading firm. Photo: 1922.
