Cantabria The Cantabrian coast stretches from Castro Urdiales to San Vicente de la Barquera and has numerous sandy beaches, bays and headlands. Santander and Comillas are favoured by the Spanish. The region has not been spoilt by mass tourism and it is reputedly in Cantabria that the Spanish language is most purely spoken. The hinterland is rich farmland and the area has a number of prehistoric caves. Comillas Comillas combines popular architectural tradition represented by the Old Square and parish church. Four buildings preside over the town First, the Neo Gothic Palacio de Sobrellano residence of the marquis of Comillas. Next to the palace is the richly decorated villa known as El Capricho created by Antonia Gaudi, Third is the cemetary with interesting modernis mausoleums and last of all, the monumental Pontifical University.
Santillana del Mar. Santillana del Mar. Described as a museum of architecture many of the Buildings are listed as national monuments. The town grew around an ancient monastery housing the relics of St Juliana and was a place of pilgrimage. The town has fine merchants houses from the 15th-17th Century and many display traditional crests or coats of arms. The Plaza de Ramon Pelayo is surrounded by splendid historic buildings. Bilbao Bilbao is the capital of the Basque province of Vizcaya and is an important industrial town. The old town dating from the 14th century stands on the opposite side of the river Nervion to the new town. Bilbao has a changing image in recent years with a new metro system, modern riverside, architectural development and now the European base for the Guggenheim modern art collection.
San Vicente de la Barquera An old fishermen's refuge, San Vicente de la Barquera offers one of the most picturesque sights on the Cantabrian coast, with its beaches, the old village and the exceptional backdrop of the snow-capped mountains of the Picos de Europa. This National Park has some spectacular mountain scenery. The highest peaks are always snow-capped. Drive along the valley of the river Deva stopping at the pretty village of Potes and continue to Fuente de. Santander Regional capital, industrial centre and port, Santander is also a popular resort. The centre of town was destroyed by a tornado in 1941 and has been rebuilt to a town plan incorporating low level development, gardens and promenades. The Cathedral was rebuilt in gothic style, its 12th century crypt can also be visited..
