FLExIBLE LINERS I recenty received a question about whether it is OK to join two engths of fexibe iner. Typicay, the answer is not straightforward. Historicay, it was aways stated iners coud ony be joined by the manufacturer to order, particuary when the required ength was greater than the standard coi. However, today some iner manufacturers and stockists offer jointing pieces for the purpose. Is this kosher I hear you ask? Having research this question it appears the simpe answer is so ong as the manufacturer agrees and you are using their specific component. In other words do not be tempted to cobbe together parts from other products or from third-party suppiers. Remember, the weight of the iner is suspended from the top and any joint must therefore be capabe to hoding the sections secure and remain gas tight. Simiary, any surface damage caused by screws wi increase the risk of ocaised corrosion. Virtuay a fue manufacturers offer a design service and are happy to advise instaers on recommended practice. Therefore, use ony their own components and foow instaation instructions. But beware, not a manufacturers recommend this practice. Of course, this question is subject to whether you are instaing a iner or you come across an existing job where a joined iner is aready fitted. Commony, you wi have no idea whether the instaer has taken advice from the manufacturer, nor what parts have been used and whether the joint is gas tight. A you can reasonaby do is to ensure the fue is cear and cean and there is sufficient draught for safe effective operation. Of course, in practice you wi be unabe to determine whether the iner is joined anyway. If there appears to be a probem which coud to be indicated eaking fue gasses at any joint or corrosion due to condensation then obviousy the fue woud be condemned as unfit for purpose. Another issue which arises from time to time concerns fexibe iners fitted upside-down. There is a 50/50 chance of getting it wrong but too often the instaer makes this fundamenta mistake. Sady, on unsupervised projects I beieve the fitting of the iner is eft to the east experienced team member. Many manufacturers mark the outside surface with an arrow indicating which way up it shoud point but the best indicator is the direction in which the interna overapping eaves point. The best expanation is to imagine the eaves resembe roof ties which overap in order to prevent rain entering the house. Simiary, it is imperative that any condensate is unabe to seep into the space between the inner and outer surfaces of the twin-wa construction. Acidic condensate entering this annuar wi shorten the ife expectancy of the materia and invaidate the manufacturer s warranty. Lasty, I am often asked about the necessity to insuate fexibe iners. Most iner manufacturers do not make this mandatory and eave it to the instaer to decide. As a guide my advice is to consider whether there is a risk that fue gasses wi be exposed to ow temperatures, thus exacerbating the risk of condensation and corrosion. If a chimney is situated on a North facing wa, exposed to cod winds, it is possibe for the brickwork to be chied which wi affect the temperature of the fue gasses. These gasses require a minimum temperature to maintain buoyancy and up-draught. Cod fue gasses become heavy and are ess incined to rise rapidy to atmosphere which wi impact on appiance performance. Added to this, modern high efficiency appiances by definition send ess heat up the chimney, therefore cooer fue gasses resut. In such cases, I woud recommend insuating the iner. Aternativey, in a terraced or semi-detached property the chimney is surrounded by warmer interna rooms and therefore heat osses from the chimney are reduced. Insuation is ess imperative, but wi do no harm. I am sometimes asked about the risk of Vermicuite absorbing moisture and causing dampness in the chimney. My answer is simpe there shoud be no moisture present in the chimney! If water is present it can ony come from three paces, a of which can be addressed. 1. Rain entering via the pot, which is ess of a risk that many beieve, but can be resoved by fitting a suitabe rain-cap to the termina. However, sometimes rain caps can create a restriction which woud reduce the draught. 2. Rising damp, which is a construction issue. 3. Water ingress from eaking ead fashings around the chimney stack. I beieve this is the most common cause and often goes unresoved due to the inabiity of roofers to understand the nature of the probem. During wet weather, arge quantities of water fow down the roof which is shed by the ead-work. Any hair-ine crack in the ead wi aow water to penetrate by capiary action aowing the brickwork to become saturated. SWEEP S ROOF FALL COSTS 20,000 Fines totaing 20,000 have been imposed on a firm of chimney and roofing speciaists after a fa suffered by one of its empoyees. A prosecution was brought by the Heath & Safety Executive (HSE) after Chimney Sweep Dyan Skehorn who was sweeping a chimney from the top, fe and fractured two ribs, suffered a coapsed ung and fractured his pevis. His empoyers, D. Henderson Chimney Speciaists and Roofers Ltd of Cackmannanshire, were found to have faied to take precautions to prevent the fa, not carried out a suitabe and sufficient risk assessment, nor provided adequate training or empoyed a safe system of work for empoyees engaged in Chimney Sweeping. HSE Inspector Kerry Eiot said, This incident was entirey preventabe. Investigations ceary showed that this chimney coud have been ceaned from within the property, something this company did not even consider at the time. If it is not possibe to avoid working at height then empoyers must ensure that they provide empoyees with the necessary equipment to keep them safe. COINS FOUND IN INGLENOOK Coins dating back to George III were discovered in an ingenook chimney by Kent Chimney Sweep Peter Greaves. They were discovered in a sma pot on a edge about six foot up the chimney when he inserted a video camera to check for fue defects. The soot covered pot contained about a dozen coins, one of which was two hundred years od. CONGRATULATIONS TO ROB PAGE, NACS MASTER TUTOR NACS President & CEO Mr Martin P. SUITABLE FUELS I shoud ike to take this opportunity to dwe on a subject which is cose to my heart, yet sedom discussed here. This is the apparent mystery surrounding soid fues which are suitabe or otherwise? Unike gas and oi, there are many different products avaiabe in the marketpace ranging from softwood ogs to anthracite. I estimate the pubic coud potentiay choose from up to 40 different soid fue types, so the decision is not easy. Obviousy, in some cases the choice may be restricted due to the design of the appiance, but customers with a muti-fue stove coud seect from a mind-bogging array of products. The UK market for wood is sti in its infancy when compared to mainand Europe where wood burning is a ong estabished tradition. Consequenty, many UK consumers ack basic knowedge reating to suitabiity of certain wood species and the importance of ony burning wood with minimum moisture content. Conversey, Western European consumers can ca upon generations of experience and a we estabished wood suppy infrastructure to ensure ony best quaity fue is burned. However, whist there is a variety of tree species to choose from, in practice seection is imited to what is ocay avaiabe and sometimes of dubious quaity from itinerant traders. Guides to wood types and their uses are avaiabe from a number or sources and a stress the importance of ensuring moisture content is at a minimum, and certainy beow 20%. Without doubt, the greatest confusion surrounds the seection of soid minera fues to the novice this means fues derived from coa reated products or bends thereof. When we speak of coa many peope wi reate to bituminous housecoa, mainy used on open fires capabe of providing an attractive ong fame fire with ampe radiant heat. Not the most efficient way to heat the home but certainy the image most peope associate with a cosy winter evenings in front of the fire in your favourite armchair. Of course, fashion now dictates every home shoud have a stove to provide the psychoogica comforts of the open fire in a high efficiency and controabe package. Some stoves are designed for wood burning ony but many are designated muti-fue aowing customers a wider choice. And this is where the confusion begins. Most stove manufacturers do not recommend burning bituminous coa on their appiances due to the high voatie content and the potentia for soot deposits to bock the fue. However, there are many smokeess fues suitabe for the purpose. A offer high caorific content and wi burn unattended for many hours. Anthracite is a naturay smokeess fue, the majority of which is suppied from South Waes. It is suitabe for arger cosed muti-fue appiances, pus cookers and gravity feed boiers. Smokeess fues ovoids and briquettes are manufactured for both open fires and cosed appiances. Thankfuy, whist many muti-fue stoves are designed to burn wood they are equay suited to smokeess products. There are neary thirty smokeess fues suitabe for cosed appiances isted in the current Officia Guide to HETAS Approved Products and Services. A have been independenty tested and meet the required criteria. Quaity and price wi vary and offer customers a wide choice of fues depending on need and affordabiity. In addition, many Coa Merchants suppy bended products which often prove popuar with ess we-off customers. In reaity the fina ist of fues on offer probaby exceeds fifty athough for some brands the avaiabiity may be ocaised. Questions often arise about petroeum coke, a product which is much maigned. Petcoke as it is often caed, is not a coke as defined, and is an imported by-product from the petroeum refining industry. When first introduced into the UK it was a cheap high caorific vaue fue with very ow ash content. Unfortunatey, it quicky gained in popuarity together with a bad reputation for damaging cast iron and stee fire-box parts because the high fire-bed temperatures caused distortion and burning of components. It shoud ony be used when bended with an ash bearing fue. As a consequence, virtuay a appiance manufacturers banned its use and warned customers that their warranty woud be invaidated. However, for some years petcoke has been sod bended as a 50/50 mix with other fues, such as hard coke, to create an acceptabe product which has proven popuar with customers. Recenty however, rises in the cost of petroeum coke has rendered these products ess popuar. But petroeum coke has not disappeared. Amost a smokeess fue manufacturers add a percentage of crushed petcoke to the fue bend to improve the burning characteristics and reduce the ash content. The proportion of petcoke varies depending on the quaity of the other constituents and the intended end product. In this context petcoke is considered beneficia. Therefore, when advising end-users, retaiers and instaers shoud not fa into the trap of condemning fues because petcoke is incuded in the bend. Many of these products have been tested and approved by HETAS for use in muti-fue appiances. To precude these products from the ist of recommended fues woud reduce the choice to anthracite ony. REFRESHER TRAINING FOR HETAS REGISTERED INSTALLERS The Department for Communities and Loca Government (DCLG) is in charge of authorising competent person schemes (CPS). To make sure that the standards are consistent, there are rues that scheme operators must foow and conditions they must meet. Competent Person Schemes (CPS) were introduced by the UK Government to aow individuas and enterprises to sef-certify that their work compies with the Buiding Reguations as an aternative to submitting a buiding notice or using an approved inspector. A Competent Person must be registered with a scheme that has been approved by The Department for Communities and Loca Government (DCLG). HETAS is the ony competent person scheme that speciaises in the instaation of soid fue and biomass domestic heating appiances. DCLG have put in pace new conditions of authorisation for Competent Persons Scheme providers and their registrants. These new conditions of authorisation come fuy into force from June 2014, a schemes, incuding HETAS, have unti this time to put in pace operating procedures in ine with the new conditions. One requirement is to ensure that HETAS registrants are kept up to date with reguations and standards in order to maintain their technica competence against a Nationa Occupationa Standard (NOS) under a Minimum Technica Competence (MTC) assessment. The current and reevant MTC s Coming Soon... detais for the 2015 NACS E X H I B I T I O N Visit www.nacs.org.uk for further detais on exhibiting and visiting Nationa Association of Chimney Sweeps Foow Us On: require Technica Quaifications to be renewed on a five year cyce. DCLG describes these new CPS reguations as aiming to improve consistency and transparency, enhancing quaity assurance and improving the eve of compiance with the Buiding Reguations. From June 2014 a HETAS registrants on the competent person scheme wi be required to have attended a training course, or a refresher course, within the ast five years. This provides registrants with an 18 month period to bring their training up to date. In addition, HETAS registered instaers have recenty received a compimentary Technica Handbook, ony avaiabe to HETAS registered instaers. This wi be updated periodicay with reguations and standards updates. The monthy HETAS E-News wi aso keep registrants up to speed with the atest reguations and standards aong with industry activity. Detais on HETAS Refresher Courses can be found on the NACS Website www.nacs.org.uk @NACS_UK TORRENT GREENHEAT 3 WOODBURNER The heat deivered by a wood burning stove or biomass boier can be used to deiver safe, cost effective and environmentay friendy domestic heating and hot water through the range of Torrent GreenHeat open vented therma stores from Gedhi, the cyinder speciaist. Torrent GreenHeat is designed to reduce heating costs and offer househoders compete fexibiity to use renewabe energy or fossi fues, and provides more options than any other store or cyinder. Homeowners can now choose to combine uncontroed heat sources such as og burners and biomass boiers, with renewabe technoogies incuding soar therma or heat pumps, with conventiona gas, oi or pg to deiver superby efficient heating and hot water. With the Torrent GreenHeat therma store being open vented - it provides an inherenty safe system with no need for discharge pipework, overcoming Part G Buiding Reguations regarding discharge requirements. This enabes the store to be situated virtuay anywhere in the house. Gedhi managing director Jason Hobson expains: Torrent GreenHeat is the perfect partner for uncontroed heat sources such as wood chip burners or og burning stoves. It makes it easier than ever before to use a wood burner and other renewabe energy sources for both heating and hot water, giving househoders and instaers more choice in how a home is heated. With Torrent GreenHeat, homeowners and instaers can choose to combine a wood burner with soar panes or heat pump, and have a gas, eectric or oi unit as back up. But using the correct contros, Torrent GreenHeat wi revert to the expensive fossi fue heat source ony as a ast resort. So for exampe, a house may have a wood burning stove with boier in the ounge or kitchen which feeds energy into the Torrent GreenHeat therma store, heating the home and providing hot water. As the heat in the store is used it is repaced by the wood burner, and the superby insuated Torrent GreenHeat ensures very ow standing osses. However if the wood burner is not producing enough heat to maintain the best operating temperature for the store, then the oi or gas boier can be switched on to boost the store, and switched off when it is no onger needed. Jason adds: Torrent GreenHeat is the heart of the domestic heating system offering smart fexibiity in the choice of energy options. A key difference between Torrent GreenHeat and other units currenty on the market incuding conventiona cyinders, is the fact that Torrent is a primary store which circuates water directy through radiators or underfoor heating, making it hugey efficient, both in terms of receiving heat and deivering it to the home. Mains pressure hot water is deivered via the pate heat exchanger inked to the primary store. That means domestic hot water for taps and showers is not stored water but instantaneousy heated mains cod water, eiminating any risk of egionea contamination. Gedhi s patented hot water contro system monitors the temperature of the water and using inteigent contro moduates the pump to contro the output of the heat exchanger, ensuring safe water temperatures with no risk of scading. Torrent GreenHeat therma stores are avaiabe ony through the merchant network but are manufactured to order ocay at 10 Gedhi depots situated around the UK. That means once an order is paced Torrent GreenHeat can be manufactured precisey to the instaer s specification with the correct tappings and connections, and deivered to site within as itte as 72 hours. Torrent GreenHeat can be suppied as a repacement for an existing unit or as part of a heating system refurbishment or upgrade, and is designed to particuary appea to sef-buiders and homeowners without mains gas who are ooking for cost effective aternatives to oi and pg. For further information on the Torrent GreenHeat range of cyinders and their appications visit www.gedhi.net. 20 21

TOPSTAK ADDS NEW SKILLS THANKS TO NACS Luke Adams and Damian Bamford from chimney and woodstove speciaist, Topstak, have become registered chimney sweeps after training at the Nationa Association of Chimney Sweeps (NACS) headquarters in Staffordshire. NACS was formed in 1982 as a professiona trade association, promoting high standards for the sweeping, inspection and maintenance of chimneys Luke and Damian then cut their teeth on what is reported to be the widest ingenook in Waes, ocated in St Mary Church near Cowbridge. This atest accoade adds to the duo s cache of quaifications they recenty became HETAS registered instaers. Topstak has an ongoing programme of staff training, and is gratefu to Wesh Government funding to make this possibe. We are keen to ensure that our staff are as highy trained as possibe, expains Topstak director, Adam Pedersen. In addition to our sweeping service, we can service stoves, carry out chimney smoke tests and CCTV chimney inspections to check for damage. Mr Pedersen confirms that now is the time to sweep chimneys, cearing away the soot, before they are needed again in the autumn. Chimneys need to be swept annuay as the coa soot deposits or wood tar deposits can buid up to such an extent that they cause a chimney fire, he warns. For further information about Topstak s chimney sweeping service pease ca 01446 771 567 or visit the website www.topstak.co.uk MEETING THE DOMESTIC RHI CRITERIA The domestic RHI criteria ooks set to be aunched within days, and in order to quaify for funding, househoders must use an MCS registered instaer, and a product which is both MCS approved and meets the emissions criteria for the domestic RHI scheme. HETAS has been invoved with compiing the ist of RHU eigibe products which wi be avaiabe on the OFGEM website. Part of the eigibiity criteria for biomass appiances is an emissions certificate showing that emissions are within 30g/ GF particuates and 150 g/gj NOx. The RHI Emissions Certificates can be seen on a brand new dedicated website www.rhiecist.co.uk and manufacturers can add their products by contacting HETAS with their MCS approva and emissions certificate. Bruce Aen of HETAS said The scheme wi change the face of the renewabes industry and provide vauabe financia assistance to househods who want to switch to renewabes, particuary those in off-gas areas who wish to switch from oi. Up to 15,000 worth of funding over a seven year period is avaiabe for homes that want to insta a biomass boier. HETAS beieves the domestic RHI is a robust scheme, and over 10,000 homes have aready had the required Green Dea assessment as part of the criteria for funding. To support the aunch of the domestic RHI, the Department of Energy and Cimate Change (DECC) wi be attending a series of property and renewabe energy roadshows around the country this spring. The domestic RHI scheme is targeted at home-owners and private and socia andords who want to insta renewabe heating systems in their homes in Engand, Waes and Scotand. It wi provide ong term financia support for those who insta renewabe heating systems and wi mark a miestone in energy efficiency as it wi be the first time every buiding in the country wi be abe to take advantage of financia incentives to insta renewabe heat technoogies.
