Trekking with a conscience

Who are Community Action Treks? Community Action Treks (CAT) is a travel company specialising in trekking and climbing in the Himalaya and other mountain regions. It was founded by mountaineer Doug Scott (the first Briton to climb Everest) and supported by trek leader Jeff Frew. Martin West, a knowledgeable trekker and business consultant, has joined Doug and Jeff to lead the business operations and is backed up by experienced office and field staff. Our combined experience of running treks and climbing expeditions mean we are truly specialists in the areas where we operate. We are fully bonded members of ATOL, which protects any money you pay us for your trek. Why trek with Community Action Treks? It is true that there are a lot of trekking companies around. However not all of them have the same aims and objectives as CAT. In common with other trekking companies our primary objective is to do everything we can to make sure our trekkers have an experience of a lifetime. But we back this up with a genuine desire to give our staff in the trekking regions the best possible working conditions. Our next objective is to support the projects of our own sister charity Community Action Nepal (CAN) by transferring any surplus we make after covering costs as a donation to CAN. It is because of this direct link to our own charity that we can identify with the needs and aims of other charities fundraisers. Our final aim is to provide an understanding and approachable service to the charities with whom we work in partnership so that they feel comfortable and confident when embarking on a new fundraising event. What is CAT s Responsible Tourism record? We have recently won the Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism award for the Best in a Mountain Environment category. This is what the panel said about us: Trekkers go to the Himalaya for that once-in-alifetime adventure, and thanks to the vision of a British mountaineer, their presence has helped transform the lives of the porters who welcome them. CAT has set an example through its use of tourism for the economic and cultural benefit of communities. Its provision of health and education service, and its work with porters has contributed to the development of the International Porter Protection League.

What experience does CAT have? CAT has been in existence since 2002, but previously traded for a number of years before that as Specialist Trekking Co-operative. A variety of charity groups have trekked with us every year since we were established. Examples of those charities are: Whizz-Kidz Macmillan Cancer Support Headway Overgate Hospice Deafway Parity for Disability Lepra Martin House Hospice ROKPA British Heart Foundation The Big Issue Sense and of course our own charity Community Action Nepal In 2008 alone the British Heart Foundation raised in excess of 70,000, Overgate Hospice raised 40,000 and Headway raised 22,000 through trekking with us. What would CAT do for your charity? In short we would seek to remove from you the burden of arranging the travel, organising the trekking expedition and all the logistical concerns associated with that. Our experience in successfully organising treks for charities means that we have developed the following support package: Presentations to prospective fundraisers which describe the experience of other charity trekkers Advice to potential trekkers on the scale of the challenges and how to prepare Technical knowledge of the most suitable treks A full trek itinerary Expedition costings in good time to allow you to attract fundraisers well in advance of the trek Provide a contract between your charity and CAT Advice on trekking publicity material Provide standard booking, insurance & medical forms Provide pre-trek information, kit lists, visa advice etc. Training weekends All trek and travel arrangements by our knowledgeable UK staff This means that all you have to do is attract your target number of fundraisers and to provide us with a central point of contact with whom we can liaise.

The following is just a sample selection of the treks that we offer. We specialise in making itineraries fit the requirements of our groups, so if you can t see the exact trek you are looking for, please contact us.

The following is just a sample selection of the treks that we offer. We specialise in making itineraries fit the requirements of our groups, so if you can t see the exact trek you are looking for, please contact us.

Frequently asked questions What are the treks like? Our charity treks are fully catered camping treks. The tents are robust 2 person tents each with two inch foam mattresses. Our staff are there to guide, erect tents, cook and clear the campsites prior to departure. The porters carry each trekker s main baggage. All the trekkers need to carry is their own day-sack with the day s needs. Each trekking day is usually between 6 and 8 hours walking, starting with a hearty breakfast, a break at midday for lunch and every evening there is a three course meal served in the mess tent. What would the experience be like for your fundraisers? Not all of your fundraisers will be experienced trekkers. In fact the majority of them will have some apprehension. Our job is to make sure that they are fully briefed and properly prepared although we do expect the participants to take responsibility for their own levels of fitness. When they are on trek our experienced staff will do all they can to ensure the comfort, safety and well being of your fundraisers. We do not wish to minimise the challenge to trekkers that after all is what makes the whole experience worth sponsoring but we do take all the necessary steps to maximise their enjoyment and avoid unnecessary risk. Can we customise itineraries? We offer a range of treks and we are happy to tailor them according to the time your fundraisers have available, although we will never compromise on your group s safety in acclimatisation. The number of days shown should be taken as a guide to the minimum number of days required for the trek. We limit the number of treks we run every year so that so that we can offer a service which is tailored to our clients needs rather than only offering standard trek packages.

What is included in the trek costs? Transfers between destination airport and hotel accommodation All hotel accommodation before and after trek bed and breakfast All domestic flights and ground transportation as per the itinerary Participation in the trek as per itinerary inclusive of full board, camping equipment (not sleeping bag) guide and porter service (15kg load per trekker) What s it going to cost? Land-only price: Once you have decided on your trek, and have a rough idea of the numbers you expect to attract, we can give you an idea of the price of the trip. This cost will be the cost to each trekker, there is no administration fee charged to the charity. Flights: We are happy to arrange flights for groups. As flight prices vary according to availability, we will give you a quote at the time of your enquiry. The flight payment conditions vary depending on the group size. Fundraising for your charity: The total amount you wish your fundraisers to raise for your charity is for you to decide. However, the cost of the trek and flights (if you chose a flight inclusive package) must be met as condition of booking with CAT. Payment schedules to CAT:We will require a completed booking form and initial deposit of 300 from each trekker to secure their places on the trip. The balance of the trek will be due to CAT 8 weeks prior to departure. The timing of the payment of flights depends on the size of your group. Insurance: As a condition of booking each participant will need to be insured for the activities and the altitude involved, and for helicopter rescue and repatriation. This is not included in the cost of the trek, but we can guide you towards suitable insurance companies. Next Steps Decide when you would like to trek Decide which treks you are interested in (if you need help deciding this, please contact our group department for advice) Consider the likely number of participants Consider how much you want each trekker to raise for your charity Contact us to arrange a meeting we would be delighted to visit you to discuss
